Under 8 football
24 September 2016

Aodh Ruadh welcomed Four Masters, Derrygonnelly and Glencar Manorhamilton to Ballyshannon on Saturday for their under 8 end of year outdoor blitz. Weather conditions weren't great to begin with, but improved as the afternoon wore on and weren't bad by the time the last few games were played.

After a great hour or so of football with four pitches going full tilt in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh it was up to Aras Aoidh Ruaidh for a typically superb spread of food by the Aodh Ruadh parents and guardians. Under 8 manager John Hughes thanked Derrygonnelly, Four Masters and Glencar Manorhamilton for attending and making it such a great day. He began by making presentations to the players adjudged the most skilfull on each of the visiting teams. Four Masters fielded two junior teams and the awards there went to Daithí Duncan McGinty and Ethan McCrea, while Thomas McGovern took the award for the Derrygonnelly junior team. The senior awards went to Tomás Carr of Four Masters, Naoise Harbinson of Derrygonnelly and Senan Kelly of Glencar Manor, all players we can keep an eye out for in the future.

After that John began the skills presentations for the Aodh Ruadh youngsters by thanking all the parents and guardians who helped out over the course of the year with running the skills tests. He also thanked the parents and guardians for running players to training and blitzes and for helping with the catering and presenting the club in such a good light across the season. He make special mention of everyone who had helped with the lotto across the course of the year and all those who had refereed over the course of the year. Finally he thanked to Seamus Roper and William Doogan for their help all year and Niall McCready and Damian Conlon when the under 6 year wrapped up and anyone else who pitched in with training.

After that the presentation were made to the winners of the third skills test. The results for the 2010 age category were 1st Anthony Duffy, 2nd Manus Conlon, and 3rd Darragh McCready. The results for the 2009 age category were 1st Callum Dorrian, 2nd Antoin Duffy, and 3rd Eoghan McCadden The results for the 2008 age category were 1st Corey Sheridan, 2nd Daithí Sheerin and 3rd Garreth Brennan.

Then it was time for the overall skills test winners for 2016 and players had to have completed two tests to be in contention for these awards with their best two results going to the award. First and second were separated by just half a point. The overall winners were 1st Corey Sheridan, 2nd Joseph Gibbions and 3rd Eoghan 'Blake' Gallagher. Honourable mention to Callum Dorrian who just missed out by 3 points and Gareth Brennan who just missed out by 5 points on a top three place.

The most important awards of the afternoon were presented last and went to the players who had improved most over the course of the season based on their skills test results. Patrick Clarke, Oisin McCadden and Anthony Duffy all just missed out on third in what was a very tightly fought competition. The final winners were 1st Éabha Rodgers, 2nd Callum Dorrian, with 3rd place shared by Antoin Duffy and Iarla Hartin.

John wrapped up by saying he looked forward to seeing the players back in the New Hall in Coláiste Cholmcille on Friday, 7th October for the under 8 indoor competition.
