Aodh Ruadh's eye for goal made the difference at a blustery Father Tierney Park as they got the better of a game St Michael's outfit on Sunday afternoon. The first half got off to a barn-storming start with Aodh Ruadh winning the throw-in and lacing it into the square where David Dolan collected and blasted to the net as he was being upended. Eoghan Kelly opened St Michael's account a couple of minutes later, but Ballyshannon responded in style, racing the ball up the pitch where Shane McGrath was picked out in the square with a lateral kick pass and he scrambled the ball to the net. Kelly answered that with another booming shot, Michael McGinley following with another score to put four between them. Jack Gallagher replied with his side's first point of the game, but points from Paddy McGinley and Michael McGinley had the visitors back to within two points with the game moving into the second quarter. Shane McGrath notched a point in the 20th minute, probably his side's best move of the game to that stage. The last three scores of the half went the way of the Gaeltacht men though, with Michael Connor, Colin McFadden and Eoghan all finding the range to make it honours even 2-2 to 0-8 at the turn around.
Martin McElhinney edged his side in front for the first time with opening score of the second half. There was an eight minute hiatus before the next score, but it was worth the wait, Shane McGrath's dancing feet taking him through the St Michael's rearguard before he guided to the net. The Ernesiders could have had a fourth goal two minutes later, but Johnny Gethins thundering shot could only rattle the crossbar. Jack Gallagher did send over a graceful shot from play, but a Michael McGinley free kept the visitors well in it at 3-3 to 0-10 with 46 minutes played. Jack Gallagher then stepped up to land score of the game, a tremendous free from the deck by the terrace sideline behind the 45. Another McGinley free kept his side in the hunt, but David Dolan thumped over a point three minutes from time to give his side some breathing space with the clock running down. The final say went the way of the Reds, Eoghan Kelly converting a free, but the homesters had done enough to secure their first win of the season. In Shane McGrath and Jack Gallagher Aodh Ruadh had the difference-makers, with David Dolan, Darragh Flood Dolan and Eamonn McGrath getting through a lot of hard yards. The reserves clinched their first win of 2024 with a one point win over Saint Michael's in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday. Aodh Ruadh led from the get-go, making the most of a following breeze in the first half to run up a 3-4 to 2-2 half-time lead. However, the Reds never gave up the ghost and by full time the Ernesiders had just a point to spare, 5-7 to 5-6 the final score. Paul O'Loughlin's men got the action going in some style, Colm McGloin winning the throw-in and dropping a beauty of a kick pass right into the path of Aengus Sweeny who gathered, raced 20 metres and then slammed to the back of the net. The Saint Michael's keeper was obviously flustered by that early concession and fluffed his subsequent kick out. Jake Foley latched on to the loose ball and lobbed keeper to send the ball to the back of the net for the second time in a mere moments. Aodh Ruadh then raised a third first half green flag when the tireless Colm McGloin found the back of the net. The second half saw Odhran McGarrigle getting in on the goal scoring action, and he also fired off one of the scores of the game, a huge effort from well outside the 45. The homesters final goal came from the boot of Damian Weber who had also landed wonderfully struck 45 earlier in the game. There were a number of good displays in defence, notably Karl O'Brien who was called upon to make some crucial saves, and the back two in this 13-a-side encounter of Michael Ward and Shane McGloin. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Luke Carr who had to exit the fray after 20 minutes. The next round of the league sees Aodh Ruadh making the trip to Magheragallon to face Gaoth Dobhair on Sunday. The action starts with the senior development squad's game at 1.30pm, followed by the senior match at 3pm.

Our minors will finally return to action this Wednesday with a trip to Fintra to face Killybegs.

Our under 16 boys will be playing Melvin Gaels in a challenge match on Tuesday evening. All players should be up at the Park for 4.15pm. Training continues as normal Wednesday and Friday.

The under 10s continued their busy start to the season by welcoming Four Masters to Páirc Aodh Ruadh on Friday evening. 34 boys played over three matches with some fabulous talent on show. Training continues on Tuesday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 7pm to 8pm. Our next fixture is at home to Bundoran on Saturday. Further details will be posted on the WhatsApp group.

Well done to our under 8s who made the short trip down to Four Masters taking on both Na Rossa as well as the hosts Four Masters. We had two teams in action on the day, with each team getting three games each. Conditions ranged from Baltic, torrential rain, and lovely sunshine, but the boys had a great time anyway. Training continues on Friday evening, as we prepare to host Dungloe on Saturday.

Big congratulations to Eoghan Kelly, Aaron Cullen and the Donegal under 20s who secured their place in the Ulster semi-finals last Saturday with a 1-6 to 0-7 win over Armagh. Well done also to Barry Ward and his minor charges as Donegal recorded an impressive 2-12 to 1-8 win at a blustery Father Tierney Park on Saturday. MJ Ward was another Aodh Ruadh man in county action over the weekend. He had a prominent role as the under 15 development squad got the better of Monaghan. The game, played at the Monaghan Centre of Excellence in Cloghan, finished 3-17 to 5-8, with an injury time goal from Ward sealing it for the Tir Chonaill lads. The Erneside attacking ace finished with 1-4 in total.

Ladies
The senior ladies entertained Na Dúnaibh on Sunday afternoon in Father Tierney Park. As expected it was a hard-fought affair, but a forceful second half showing from the hosts was sufficient to secure a deserved 3-10 to 2-6 victory. Aodh Ruadh got off to a good start with Eimear McMahon proving deadly accurate from placed ball. The homesters were moving really well and creating some great attacking opportunities which Gillian Duficy, Caoimhe Devine, Cáit Gillespie and Eimear McMahon were all able to capitalise on with white flags. Although Aodh Ruadh were looking good value for their lead, Downings kept in the game and when they enjoyed a purple patch just before half-time they made full use of it. A brace of goals wrought a big turn-around on the score board and as the half-time whistle sounded it was the visitors who were the happier, Aodh Ruadh 1-7, Na Dúnaibh 2-5. In the second half the Shamettes had whatever benefit the blustery breeze might be offering, and they made full use of it. Highlight of the second 30 minutes though was probably an almost complete defensive shut-out by the well-drilled homesters. Every single defensive player put in an enormous effort as a doughty Downings attack continued to prove dangerous. However, despite the best efforts of the Rosguill girls they could only register one further point in the second half. Up the other end of the pitch Aodh Ruadh's disciplined attacking probes started to yield strong results. Gillian Dufficy finished a delight of a goal, while Orla Keon raised her second green flag of the afternoon, the imperious Eimear McMahon contributing further points from play and dead ball. Ballyshannon kept up an eye-watering work-rate right to the end and were merited 3-10 to 2-6 winners at the long whistle. Impossible to pick out any one player for praise as this was very much a victory built on a committed, not to say stylish team effort. The Division 3 game was something of a nerve shredder with Aodh Ruadh having to come from behind to get the better of a 14-woman Red Hugh's. The Ballyshannon girls had the backing of the breeze in the first half and two well taken frees and a point from play by Elaine Dorrian helped her side into an early lead. The Killygordon girls came back strongly though and started to pick off scores of their own. A goal from Niamh Hoey was a big lift as Aodh Ruadh looked to stay in the contest. Red Hugh's cause took a big set-back 15 minutes in though when they lost a player for a collision with keeper Gráinne Maguire. With half-time closing in Megan Murphy raided up to fire a over a lovely point before Aoife Bromley dropped a shot into the net to send the Shamettes for the half-time oranges with a slim 2-4 to 1-6 advantage. The second half was a titanic struggle between the sides, and with the breeze against them the Ernesiders needed a huge shift from their defence. They delivered in spades with Rebecca McLoughlin putting in a colossal display along with Fiona McGonigle, Niamh Barrett and Kyra McNulty. Red Hugh's did get their nose in front with three points, but hard-earned scores from Fiona McGonigle and Dairín Sweeny meant it was a level game going into the closing minutes. Niamh Hoey was the one who came up on the end of a patient Ballyshannon move to slip over the winner as it finished Aodh Ruadh 2-7 Red Hugh's 1-9. Next weekend sees both sides in league action once again. The Division 1 team enjoy home comforts as Glenfin make the trip to Father Tierney Park, while the Division 3 team travel to Ballybofey to take on MacCumhaill's. Throw-in for both games at 10.30am.

The under 16s took on a strong Dungloe outfit in Father Tierney Park last Tuesday. The visitors secured a good victory, but the Ballyshannon girls put in a really gutsy performance over the course of the 60 minutes. Dungloe did much of their damage in the early stages, but Aodh Ruadh came into the game defensively as the match wore on. Lily O'Donnell was superb in the first half, while in the second half Aine Neilan and Erin Gallagher were magnificent as the Ernesiders prevented Dungloe raising a green flag in the second 30. Megan Murphy and Éabha Rogers also put in a good shift in the defensive sector. Further out the pitch Rachel Gillespie picked off a well-deserved score while Katie McCaffrey got through a lot of work in the middle third. Next up for the under 16s is another home game this Tuesday, with Buncrana the opposition at 7pm.

Well done to our under 15 girls who got their Féile tilt off to a great start with a two point win in Killybegs on Saturday afternoon. It was a very competitive game between two well-matched sides, with the elements playing a big part in proceedings. Aodh Ruadh had the wind in the first half and were 0-4 to 0-0 ahead by half-time. The game's critical score was a second half Rachel Gillespie goal which helped her side to a 1-5 to 1-3 win. Next up for the girls is a clash with Saint Naul's, fixture details to be confirmed.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh made the long trip to Inishowen on Friday evening for their second outing in the Senior Hurling League. The Ernesiders delivered a much improved performance, but the hosts still had too much in hand and ran out winners on a scoreline of 5-15 to 1-5. Buncrana had the game's first scores from a brace of frees, but Ballyshannon hit back with their best spell of play of the season so far. Darragh Cleary got it going with an eighth minute goal to propel his side into the lead. That was followed by points from Daniel Breen and Cian McKenna as Aodh Ruadh enjoyed a purple patch. Buncrana hit back with a goal of their own 12 minutes in though, and further scores from the Scarvey men helped them to a 3-8 to 1-3 interval advantage. Buncrana went up a gear in the second half, and, although Danny Breen and Cian McKenna managed to grab further points, the hosts were finding their scores easier, and ran out deserved winners. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Tommy Clyne; Adam Rami, Kyle McCafferty; Daniel Downey, Cian McKenna (0-2), Adam Clarke; Ciaran Rami, Ryan McCormack; Daniel Breen (0-3), Tommy Winters, Martin Larkin; Darragh Cleary (1-0), Killian Bradshaw. The under 16s have a busy week ahead with two games on the cards. First up on Monday evening they travelled to Strabane to play a neutral venue game against Robert Emmet's, Slaughtneil from Derry in the second round of the Táin Óg competition. They put in a phenomenal performance in atrocious conditions to take the spoils on a scoreline of 3-13 to 3-11. That result will be a great fillip ahead of Thursday evening when the team will welcome Burt to Father Tierney Park for their second round game in the All-County League. The under 12s see the start of their season this week as they travel to Ballybofey to take on MacCumhaill's on Thursday evening. Best of luck to Patrick McGarrigle, Rob Knott and all the panel.

On Saturday, another sizeable number of Aodh Ruadh players were involved a the county minors took on a strong Mayo side in a very windy Convoy. In tough conditions, Donegal went into the half-time break ahead by three points. That lead wasn't enough, however and Mayo came out stronger in the second half to eventually win out on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-8. Regardless, there was some fine hurling and good teamwork at times from Donegal and a number of impressive individual performances, in particular from our own Jun Hui Lin and Liam Doogan. Next up for these lads is a third round assignment against Westmeath in Castlepollard on Saturday.

Training continues for our under 6s, under 8s and under 10s on Sunday mornings at 11.45am in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The boys are excited and busy getting ready for their first all–county blitz of the year at the end of April. Key care
We ask that managers, mentors, team helpers, etc. who use the key box provided at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh are diligent in returning the keys immediately after use. The keys have been taken off the premises on a number of occasions recently. This can have various unwelcome repercussions, foremost of which is impeding smooth access to the pitch in the event of an injury to a player. So we ask all those who use the keys to please be mindful of the importance of promptly returning keys to the box after use.

Ballyshannon Bingo
Teresa Campbell was the big winner at last week's bingo, taking the €500 Jackpot, €100 House and €50 double line prize. The other house winners were Caroline Murphy, Mary McGonigle, Josie Lynch, Aiden Duffy, Jacqui Egan, Maureen Connolly, Collette Smith and Anne Granaghan. Brendan Hoey was the last man standing to take the €130 prize. The €1,000 snowball runs another week and will be in play on 52 numbers this week as again there is €2,800 to play for.
