Club Notes – 29 August 2023

Football

Aodh Ruadh recorded a famous victory in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Gaoth Dobhair 2-8 to 0-9. After last year’s quarter-final defeat to this side the character of the Ballyshannon men was questioned. This result will send out a rather different message. The breeze was to play a big part in both the senior and reserve games, and, unusually, was blowing southerly giving the team playing up the incline a significant advantage. The visitors played with the assistance of the elements in the first half and used it to good effect initially, sending over their opening score just two minutes in. They added a second five minutes later before Aodh Ruadh opened their account courtesy of a peach of a shot from Conor Patton off the outside of the boot. Gaoth Dobhair answered that with a free, but the lively Michael McKenna fed Shane McGrath to fist over the Ernesiders response. Shortly after Eoghan Kelly was hacked down after a surging run into an undermanned Gaoth Dobhair defence to allow Philip Patton to level the game from the placed ball with 17 minutes played. That was to be Aodh Ruadh’s last scoring contribution to the first half, with Gaoth Dobhair tagging on three points without reply to make it 0-3 to 0-6 as the teams retreated to the dressing rooms for half-time. Aodh Ruadh looked a different side on the resumption, retaining the ball much better and moving with much more intent. Six minutes in they made their play. They constructed a strong thrusting move which released Eamonn McGrath into an exposed Gaoth Dobhair defence and he slammed to the back of the net. Gaoth Dobhair won possession from the kick out, but their player was swarmed by Aodh Ruadh players starving for ball. They forced a turn over which was sent directly into the danger area and Darren Drummond had time to work himself some space and blast to the net. Ballyshannon were now in a three point lead and the dynamic of the game had changed radically. A sumptuous point from Michael McKenna stretched the lead and underlined the confidence Aodh Ruadh were now playing with. Cian Rooney then converted a tricky free with 41 minutes played to make it 2-5 to 0-7. Gaoth Dobhair’s first score of the half ame with the match already into the final quarter, but Shane McGrath kept the pressure up with a wonderful booming effort. The Magheragallon men did come back with two points, but the Ernesiders came with a strong finish. First Michael McKenna was fouled for Philip Patton to pop over and then, with pretty much the last kick of the game, Cian Rooney pivoted on the spot before splitting the posts with a lovely point. James Connor sounded his whistle immediately to confirm a five point win for John McNulty’s men. It was a very strong display by the Ballyshannon men. Peter Boyle’s kick outs were exceptional and the whole defensive unit put in a powerful performance right across the 60 minutes. Conor Patton, Michael McKenna and Eamonn McGrath all contributed well when Aodh Ruadh were on the offensive too. Cian Dolan was a steadying influence in the central third, while Shane McGrath built on his match-winning display last day out, with another compelling performance here. Up front Darren Drummond, Cian Rooney and Philip Patton all made good use of the ball and didn’t neglect their defensive duties either. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Peter Boyle; Kyle Murray, Conor Patton (0-1), Colm Kelly; Michael McKenna (0-1), Eamonn McGrath (1-0), Niall Murray; Cian Dolan, Shane McGrath (0-2); Eoghan Kelly, Cian Rooney (0-2, 1f), Philip Patton 0-2f); Calum O’Halloran, Darren Drummond (1-0), Eddie Lynch. Subs: David Dolan for Callum O’Halloran HT; Mark McGlynn for Eoghan Kelly 50 minutes; Matt Gillespie for Niall Murray 57 minutes. We have a gallery of pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org now.

The Reserves took on Gaoth Dobhair in the curtain raiser and, a bit like the senior game, paid the price for not making the most of the elements in the first half. Jack Gallagher proved to be the marquee Erneside player on show in this contest, and he opened the scoring 36 seconds in. Gaoth Dobhair levelled with a free, but a great score from play followed by a well struck dead ball, both from Jack Gallagher, handed the impetus back to Aodh Ruadh. The visitors notched a free ten minutes in, but Ballyshannon hit back in style when a raking move on the opposition goal finished with Colm McGloin teeing up Gary Carty to palm home. That score came in the 17th minute, and it was to prove Aodh Ruadh’s last of the half. Meanwhile Gaoth Dobhair chipped away at the scores and hit the equaliser two minutes into first half added time to leave it 1-3 to 0-6 at the turn-around. Gaoth Dobhair took the lead just 12 seconds into the new half, but Jack Gallagher hit a sensational point three minutes later to square things up again. The Gaeltacht men profited from slack work in the Aodh Ruadh attack to hit a turn-over point, but again Jack Gallagher fired over another wonder score to keep his side in it. However, in the next five minute spell the game was carried away from the hosts. First Gaoth Dobhair edged into the lead again, then they punished another turn-over with a point and then hit the net, although Aodh Ruadh had a valid shout that it should have been a free out. A Jack Gallagher free kept four points between the sides, but with Gaoth Dobhair hitting an answering dead ball with just seven minutes left, the clock was against Aodh Ruadh. Jack Gallagher landed another free with a minute remaining, but the last say went to Gaoth Dobhair, who once again punished some poor play from the host to find the back of the net. It finished Aodh Ruadh 1-7 Gaoth Dobhair 2-11. The Magheragallon men were very strong, but Aodh Ruadh will know they should have been closer at the end. Colm McGloin was in fine form in the middle of the pitch and never took the foot off the gas all day. Gary Carty did a lot of work too and was effective in breaking the Gaoth Dobhair line. Star of the show though was Jack Gallagher who Gaoth Dobhair really struggled to contain throughout and was full value for his seven point return. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers was as follows: Aaron Cullen; Johnny Gallagher, Michael Ward, Luke Carr; Tiernan Flood Dolan, Dan Warnock, Aidan Sweeny; Colm McGloin, Odhran McGarrigle; Darragh Flood Dolan, Damian Weber, Gary Carty (1-0); Jack Gallagher (0-7, 3f), Michael Sticky Ward, David McGurrin. Subs: Cathal Kelly for Michael ‘Sticky’ Ward HT, Aonghus Sweeny for Odhran McGarrigle 39 minutes; Harry Howarth for Tiernan Flood Dolan 56 minutes. We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org now.

The third round draw of the championship saw Aodh Ruadh paired with Killybegs. Those games will take place in Eamonn Byrne this Saturday, with the reserve curtain raiser at 4.30pm followed by the senior clash at 6pm.

The minors have a break this week as they wait to see if they are graded in the Cup or Shield competitions, with their next outing slated for Monday, 4th September.

Our under 15 boys travelled to MacCumhaill Park last Friday night to face Termon in the Division 2 Cup shield final. These teams met in the group stages of the championship, with Termon running out easy winners, so our lads knew the enormity of the task that lay ahead. Conditions were wet, which led to handling errors and mistakes by both teams in the early stages. There were no scores in the opening ten minutes, with Termon sending several scoring chances wide, and Aodh Ruadh having difficulty getting over the half way line. Termon then sent over two quick fire points, and looked in full control. However a sweeping move up the pitch and some absolutely brilliant, quick one-twos and a shot to the top corner of the net by full forward MJ Ward put Aodh Ruadh a point up. It was as good a goal as you would see anywhere. Termon continued to dominate the possession stakes, and fired over two more points, before another Aodh Ruadh goal rocked Termon, a quick turn on the edge of the small square and a smart finish to the net, this time by pacy corner forward Callum Dorrian. Termon finished the half with another point, leaving Aodh Ruadh fortunate to be going in at half time a point to the good, 2-0 to 0-5. The second half was a different story, with Aodh Ruadh finally getting to grips with their physically stronger opponents. The Ernesiders defended bravely, and as a team, frustrated Termon time after time with some great blocking. Our forwards were also starting to dominate proceedings, and with Termon losing their discipline, Ballyshannon won many frees in the scoring zone. Aodh Ruadh would outscore Termon seven points to two in that second half, with a great display of fitness and desire helping to win the match on a score line of 2-7 to 0-7. Captains Corey Sheridan and Garreth Brennan received the shield from county board representative David McLoone, to round off a very successful year for this group.

Under 13 training continues on Mondays from 7pm to 8pm and Fridays from 6pm to 7.15pm. The team will be travelling to Ballybofey on Wednesday for a challenge game against MacCumhaill’s with the action throwing-in at 6.30pm.

Under 11 training continues as normal on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5.45pm to 6.45pm Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. On Saturday at 12.15pm, there will be a home game against Glencolmcille in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. There is also the possibility of a game against Naomh Conaill at 1.30pm and if confirmed, further details and team lists will be posted on the team WhatsApp group.

Ladies

Aodh Ruadh matched Naomh Conaill score for score in Sunday evening’s senior championship opener in Glenties, but it was goals which made the difference, and, unfortunately for Ballyshannon, they went the way of the hosts. It was first blood to the Shamettes just a minute in with Eimear McMahon belting over a monster free from almost 40 metres. Naomh Conaill responded two minutes later to level though and establish the template for the game. Aodh Ruadh edged in front again in the fourth minute with a good move finished by Eimear McMahon and shortly after Cáit Gillespie stretched the lead with a good effort from play. With the game moving into the second quarter Naomh Conaill won a penalty, which Brídín Maguire did well to get down to, but it just squeezed in. Ballyshannon levelled the game up again with eight minutes left in the half, Lauren Foy taking some heavy treatment before finally winning her free which Eimear McMahon converted. Two minutes later Foy split the posts for her first senior championship point, but Glenties quickly square matters up. Eimear McMahon then nosed the Ernesiders in front again only for Naomh Conaill to restore parity once, but Cáit Gillespie registered again on the stroke of half time to give the visitors a slim interval advantage. The scoring rate slowed in the second half, but it was Glenties who were to have the better of it with two points in the 35th minute taking them into the lead. Eimear McMahon finished a great Aodh Ruadh move ten minutes later to make it all square again, but three minutes later Naomh Conaill rattled in 1-1 in less than a minute to effectively decide the game. Aodh Ruadh worked hard to get back into the contest and Eimear McMahon did hit a free with a minute left to leave a goal in it, but Naomh Conaill shut up shop and the Ernesiders couldn’t manufacture a way through. A tough defeat for Aodh Ruadh after playing so well for long stretches of this game. Small errors cost dearly though, which is as should be expected at senior championship level. For a second game in succession Annalisa Rabbitte put in a storming performance, with Lauren Foy another to really rise the physicality of the contest. Anna Rafferty was phenomenal in the defence and did a great job organising and motivating those around her. Kate Cunningham and Caitlin McGarrigle were neat and controlled in possession, while Caoimhe Keon made some useful runs despite being just off the plane. Up front Eimear McMahon did well with Terri Gallagher giving great energy and Cáit Gillespie battling hard. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Brídín Maguire; Saoirse McDevitt, Anna Rafferty, Hannah Doherty; Kate Cunningham, Caitlin McGarrigle, Lauren Foy (0-1); Aoibhinn McGarrigle, Orla Keon; Annalisa Rabbitte, Gillian Dufficy, Cáit Gillespie (0-2); Eimear McMahon (0-6, 4f), Terri Gallagher, Caoimhe Keon. Sub Ciara Larkin for Terri Gallagher 59 minutes.

The Junior ladies bounced back from a tough defeat to Kilcar last week with a resounding win over Termon 2 in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday morning. Termon were game, but only managed one point over the course of the game, with the Shamettes dominating in every sector. Still it took seven minutes for the hosts to register on the score board with Donna Martin winning and converting a free before then setting up Mary Flora Scott to pick out a lovely goal. Scott then added two further points from play as Aodh Ruadh started to take control of matters. At the end of the quarter Roisin McGloin won a penalty which Donna Martin tucked home on the rebound and a couple of minutes later Amanda Mahon raised a fourth white flag for the Ernesiders. Termon then notched their first point, but Katie McGowan more than cancelled that out with a shot which looped into the net. Mary Flora Scott then followed that with a quick 1-1 and that left Aodh Ruadh leading by 4-5 to 0-1 at the interval. The second half saw the homesters shooting into the ‘scoring’ goals and they were quickly making that advantage count with Scott landing her hat-trick goal seconds after the throw-in. She then added two quick-fire points before turning provider for Amanda Mahon who showed great presence of mind to steer to the net. Donna Martin then added to her tally before sub Emily McNamee teed up Fiona McGonigle for a collector’s item point from the tenacious defender. Mary Flora Scott  was then on target again with sub Hannah McGuinness firing over to become her side’s sixth scorer. Another sub, Ciarde Sheerin, then set up Niamh Hoey to drill home goal number seven. Megan Murphy then released Hoey to launch over the last score of the game as it finished Aodh Ruadh 7-13 Termon 0-1. It was a complete team performance from the Shamettes with Mary Flora Scott in flying form. Donna Martin and Niamh Hoey supplied great movement in the forward line and took some lovely scores. In midfield Dáirín Sweeny and Fiona McGonigle did brilliantly with some great tackling and link up play. Further back Aodh Ruadh gave their opposition precious few opportunities, with Roisin McGloin, Shauna Dolan and Shelly Loughlin leading the effort. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Roisin Maguire; Shauna Dolan, Megan McGee, Megan Murphy; Roisin McGloin, Shelley Laughlin, Meabh McCloskey; Fiona McGonigle (0-1), Dairin Sweeny; Katie McGowan (1-0), Mary Flora Scott (3-6), Amanda Mahon (1-1); Aoife Bromley, Donna Martin (1-2, 1f), Niamh Hoey (1-0). Subs: Emily McNamee for Shelly Loughlin 34 minutes; Hannah McGuinness (0-1) for Aoife Bromley 40 minutes; Ciarde Sheerin for Roisin McGloin 43 minutes. Check out aodhruadh.org for a gallery of shots from the game

The senior ladies are away again next week with a trip to Mountcharles to take on Saint Naul’s at 10.30am. Meanwhile, the junior ladies have a break next weekend ahead of their final group game, an away fixtures against MacCumhaill’s on Sunday, 10th September at 10.30am.

The minors ladies recorded a good win last Tuesday after an entertaining encounter with Kilcar in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The visitors made the early running with two points, and the Shamettes had to wait until the ninth minute for Faye Gillespie to kick their first point. Two minutes later Aodh Ruadh were propelled into the lead after a surging run from Lauren Foy ended with the midfielder laying off for Emily McNamee to hit the net. Kilcar had the game level as the game moved into the second quarter with a free followed by a point from play. With ten minutes remaining in the half though Lauren Foy came rampaging through again and drilled home a fantastic individual goal. A minute later Faye Gillespie stretched the lead with a point, only for Kilcar to respond with a quickfire 1-1 to square the game up at 2-2 to 1-5. The last say of the half went to Hannah McGuinness though, as she smartly clipped over a point to give her side a narrow interval advantage. The second half proved a great spectacle for the crowd in Munday’s, with Aodh Ruadh getting off to a whirlwind start. Straight from the throw-in Rachel Gillespie set up cousin Faye to hit the net. Then Hannah McGuinness turned provided for Rachel Gillespie to pop over a point. Rachel then set up Faye again for another point to put two goals between the sides. Kilcar came back with a point, but Rachel Gillespie answered with her second point of the game. Ciara Larkin then fired over from play with the Ernesiders putting together some lovely football. The sides went blow for blow then pretty much to the full time whistle. Kilcar pointed a free, but Ciara Larkin cancelled that out with a dead ball of her own before Aoife Travers hit a good score from play. As the game moved into the last ten minutes Kilcar sent over a point, but again Ciara Larkin raised a white flag in response. The visitor finished with a flourish, hitting 1-1, but Ballyshannon had done enough to secure a deserved victory. Andrea Moore put in a player of the match display, snuffing out the Kilcar danger-woman and getting up the pitch to contribute well in the attack too. Lauren Foy has being playing outstanding football of late and this was no exception, with her influential first half a big factor in the win. In the attack Faye Gillespie ran riot with good support from cousin Rachel in the second half. Ciara Larkin had a fantastic game, taking some good scores, while Emily McNamee and Hannah McGuinness also caused the opposition defence plenty of bother. Further back Katie McGowan read the game like a book with the ever-dependable Megan Murphy marshalling the rearguard impeccably. Next up for the minors is the trip to Glencolumcille this Tuesday to take on Naomh Columba.

Under 14s are still awaiting details for their refixed Division 1 Shield decider, but it is likely to take place this Thursday. Keep an eye on the club’s social media output for updates.

Hurling

The build up and preparations for our minors’ county championship final continues unabated this week. The big match has been scheduled for a 12 noon throw-in at The Cross, Killygordon. These lads have had a fantastic season to date with two titles already under their belts. Hopefully we’ll have a large and noisy group of travelling supporter to get behind the boys.

The under 15s had their home match against Setanta postponed last week due to a congested fixture schedule. The game has yet to be re-scheduled. They also have a further break this week as they have a bye in the league. Next up for the lads is an away game against MacCumhaill’s on Thursday, 7th September.

Huge congratulations go out this week to the 11 under 15 Aodh Ruadh players who were part of the Donegal team who ran out over-all winners in the Peter O’Keefe memorial tournament. The tournament took place in the Sligo Centre of Excellence in Scarden in some brutal weather conditions on Saturday. The Donegal lads gave two great performances, firstly against Mayo in the semi-final and then against Sligo in the final and it was fitting to see an Aodh Ruadh player, Garreth Brennan, as captain of the team lift the Peter O’Keefe cup and bring it back to Donegal for the first time in a number of years. The boys received a hero’s welcome back in Ballyshannon and were invited to be guests of honour at half-time in the senior football match in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh where their coaches, Daithi Roberts and Paul Sheridan were interviewed by Michael Daly. Daithi spoke about how the size of the representation from Aodh Ruadh on the county team was testament to the strength and skills of hurling in Aodh Ruadh and he congratulated all involved in the club. He also paid tribute to the fact that the captain, Garreth Brennan and the winner of the Man of the Tournament award, Corey Sheridan, both hailed from Aodh Ruadh as well. The 11 Ballyshannon players on the panel on the day were: Garreth Brennan, Corey Sheridan, Daithi Sheerin, Joseph Gibbions, Sean Maguire, Finn Doogan, Shay Winters, Antoin Duffy, Tómas Keown, Antóin O’Loughlin and Jayden McGrath Clyne. We have a gallery of shots from the presentation up on aodhruadh.org now. Despite the sore bones, all these lads appeared out on Sunday morning to the junior training session with their cup in tow and had a great fun training session with the under 11s. Well done to all the lads.

Our under 11s are nearing the end of their season, and made the long trip to Buncrana on Sunday morning. Conditions weren’t ideal for hurling, but the players enjoyed a great morning of hurling. Training continues on Tuesday at 6pm, and on Thursday we are travelling to Convoy to take on Setanta.

Also, well done young Aodh Ruadh hurler, Éanna Redden, who gave a good account of himself at the Community Games in Carlow on Saturday morning. He was delighted with his pucks and really enjoyed the experience.

This Sunday we host the Aodh Ó Dalaigh Tournament. This year it is being played as a Go Games blitz, and we look forward to hosting seven teams, Sylane from Galway, Keady from Armagh, Tooreen from Mayo, Tourlestrane from Sligo as well as our neighbours Saint Molaise Gaels, Four Masters, and Cluainín Manorhamilton. We look forward to remembering a great Gael, and a busy day of hurling action.

Our under 7s travelled to Convoy for an all county blitz on Friday evening, taking part in four games. As ever, thank you to all the parents for travelling, your efforts are always appreciated.

Our underage training on Sunday morning had some special guests as the Aodh Ruadh members of the Donegal team who won the Peter O’Keefe Cup on Saturday came up to help out at training. We started off with some questions from the youngsters about how to improve their skills and all the under 15s had the same answer, practice. We then had some fun games, followed up with a skills section all coached by the under 15s. They stayed around to referee the games at the end of training and give some pointers too. Thanks to all of these young stars for coming up and giving the younger players something to aspire to!

Camogie

We are hoping to keep training going up to the end of October with both underage and senior as numbers are improving each week. Training continues this week with the senior ladies training at the Coláiste Cholmcille pitch on Wednesday at 7.15pm and Saturday at 11am. Underange training will be moved to the Coláiste Cholmcille pitch this Sunday at 11.45am to facilitate a hurling tournament taking place in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

With the return of school not far off we are hoping to see Camogie reintroduced into PE activities in the local schools in the new year.

Sunrise4Stop walk

Aodh Ruadh proudly supported the North West STOP-Suicide Prevention Sunrise4Stop walk on Saturday morning at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Thanks so much to everyone who came out to support this fantastic cause, which started out just before 6am on what was a dark and wet morning. We are so privileged to have access to this service here in the Northwest and are grateful to everyone behind the scenes who has worked so tirelessly to ensure this important service continues. Thank you to Yoga with Zia who kindly offered her services of a gentle warm up before the walk and also to our amazing volunteers Lisa, Sabrina and Linda for the hot cuppas afterwards. Unfortunately there may be a time in almost all our lives when we will be affected by suicide and the impact that this has extends to families, friends, towns and whole communities. We would like to raise awareness that there is help out there through the free counselling call service on 0818 444 000.
