Mick Shannon Under 10 Tournament 2006

Aodh Ruadh hosted Erne Gaels, Bundoran and Killybegs at their annual Mick Shannon u-10 tournament last Saturday, 7th June. Early morning showers in Ballyshannon gave way to a dry, sunny day with perfect conditions for football.

Aodh Ruadh took on Bundoran in the first match in the A Section. It was a close game between two evenly matched team and the 0-2 to 0-2 final score was a fair result. Erne Gaels took on Killybegs in the other first round match which proved to be a game of two halves. Killybegs put on a powerful display of football in the first half and scored heavily, however Erne Gaels mounted a comeback with a brilliant goal shortly after the break. Killybegs defended manfully though and took the game by 4-2 to 2-1.

Killybegs took their impressive form into their second round game with Aodh Ruadh where they picked off some excellent scores and held the Ballyshannon team scoreless. It ended 4-8 to no score. Erne Gaels played a lovely brand of football in their encounter with a very competitive Bundoran team. The game finished 3-3 to 1-2 with Belleek taking the points.

Bundoran gave Killybegs a tough match in the third round of games. However Killybegs ability to shoot goals at crucial junctures helped pull them through. A final scoreline of 3-4 to 1-3 saw Killybegs into the A final with the full complement of six points. The Aodh Ruadh and Erne Gaels fixture was a fight to see who would take on Killybegs in the A final. Both sides were tightly matched in the first half. After half time Aodh Ruadh played some of their best football of the tournament to power into a seven point lead. Erne Gaels refused to give in and fought to the end and were rewarded with two late, late goals to set up a breath-taking finish. Aodh Ruadh were resilient though and held their composure to set up an Aodh Ruadh v Killybegs A Final.

Killybegs got the best possible start in the final with a goal shortly after the throw in. A second followed after a period of sustained Killybegs pressure. Aodh Ruadh came more into the game and goaled before the half time break. The second half was a very tense and nervy affair. Killybegs got the only score of the second half, another goal, and this proved to be the insurance score that saw them secure the Mick Shannon A Trophy. It was a deserved victory for a strong, well-drilled and talented squad of footballers.

Killybegs also contested the B final against Bundoran. Killybegs showed considerable class in overcoming a strong Bundoran team. As in the A final, Killybegs went into a two goal lead. Bundoran fought back with a goal from Aoibheann Granaghan, who was to the fore in driving on the Bundoran challenge. However Bundoran were unable to find an equaliser and Killybegs made it a one-two, triumphing in both the A and B sections of the Mick Shannon Tournament.
