Strong second half gives Aodh Ruadh derby spoils
Under 12 football league
3 June 2013
Aodh Ruadh 9-13
Bundoran 4-1
Father Tierney Park
Aodh Ruadh won well in the end up on a muggy evening in Father Tierney Park, but they had to earn their win, perticularly in the first half when Bundoran matched them stride for stride.
Tiarnan Dolan got the opening point of the game in the second minute to settle the homesters, but Bundoran were able to level matters three minutes later with Adam McGlone knocking over a free. Ballyshannon began to take a greater grip on the game after that and a series of three points were crowned by a goal from the dangerous Mark Gettins which had Aodh Ruadh leading 1-4 to 0-1 after 12 minutes.
Kyle McNulty halved the deficit as the game entered its second quarter when he hit the back of the net. Gettins was on the mark again three minutes later though, goaling to restore the Ernesider's six point advantage. Senan Rooney got a point for Aodh Ruadh on 27 minutes, but a minute later Adam Gallagher raided for a Bundoran goal to leave the half time scores at 2-5 to 2-1, which was a fair reflection of proceedings.
Aodh Ruadh looked like they would have to work for the win, and they applied themselves in the second half and a series of goals were to prove the key to the victory. Harry Howarth was a key mover in a lot of the homesters attacking play and he got his first goal of the game just a minute into the new half.
Adam Rami was also a good threat and his goal in the 37th minutes seemed to open the flood gates for Aodh Ruadh with Tiarnan Dolan - twice, John Patton and Keith Greene all registering goals in the ensuing five minute spell.
Bundoran were reeling during that period, but they did steady the ship as the half wore on and were able to engineer a couple of goals of their own, Adam Gallagher and Kyle McNulty both managing to raise green flags at the start of the final quarter.
The closing 15 minutes were evening matched, but there was time for one more major, with the hard-working Senan Rooney getting a well-deserved goal for his efforts.
The win was a 25 man effort with everyone having to put their shoulder to the wheel at some point. Perhaps worthy of particular mention was Mark McGlynn who covered a serious amount of ground, Senan Rooney and Tiarnan Dolan who went through a lot of ball, Ryan McDonald who was an extremely reassuring presence in nets, Mark Gettins and Harry Howarth were both good outlets in attack, while John Patton scored a goal which was very well-received in the stands.
