The Aodh Ruadh Minors were in action for the second time in a week when they faced Kilcar in Father Tierney Park on Sunday morning. The visitors could only muster 14 players for the away trip and consequently both teams fielded 13 players in near perfect conditions which was fitting for the first official day of summer.
Aodh Ruadh had a point to prove after the Houdini act against Bundoran, which saw the Ernesiders squander a nine point lead and have to hang onto the win in the dying minutes. The Ballyshannon men were bolstered by the re-introduction of Matthew Maguire who returned from injury.
The young Aodh Ruadh side started well and, unlike their previous game, maintained the momentum throughout the first half. There were fine passages of play with Philip Patton seemingly incapable of missing from any angle. Indeed, Philip managed all eight of Aodh Ruadh's points in the first half and could even afford a missed penalty which forced a fine save from the Kilcar keeper. Niall Harley made some penetrating runs through the heart of the Kilcar defence and was unlucky not to score a goal himself when he saw his shot knocked onto the upright by the Kilcar keeper and eventually scrambled away off the line. Aodh Ruadh led at half time by 0-2 to 0-8.
The second half started in a similar vein with Shane McGrath unfortunate to miss a goal opportunity. Oisín Roper worked tirelessly at mid-field and provided both an efficient attack and defence when called upon. The county minor hurling captain Eddie Lynch, was industrious in defence with many a Kilcar forward wondering what they had to do to get past him. Philip Patton, not dwelling on his earlier penalty miss, beat two defenders and scored a beautiful goal to add to his tally. He finished with a personal haul of 1-9 with points from Callum ‘Cookie’ O’Halloran and Ryan McKenna for good measure.
A much improved team performance with the only stain on the game coming from an awkward fall and twisted knee of the unfortunate Matthew Maguire. We wish him well on his recovery. Many thanks to Patrick McShane and Kevin Lyons of Kilcar who assisted in making Matthew comfortable after the incident. The final score was Aodh Ruadh 1-11 Kilcar 0-7.
