McCumhaill's ease past Ballyshannon challenge

Division 1 Hurling League
16 May 2007
Aodh Ruadh 1-12
McCumhaill's 1-03
Dennis Doherty reports

Missing three of their stronger players through injury (Anthony Coughlan, Dennis Doherty and Aidan Breslin) and exams (Mark Coughlan), the senior hurlers lost against McCumhaill's on a final scoreline of 1-12 to 1-03.

After playing with the advantage of the strong wind, Aodh Ruadh finished the half being two points adrift of McCumhaill's after conceeding a soft goal. Overall they should have finished the first half in front after missing five frees and hitting six wides from play.

The signs looked to be ominous at the start of the second half, but McCumhaill's never looked likely to score any further goals and were restricted to taking points. Towards the end of the match with some hard pulling on both sides young Mickey Bowering was red-carded for a late swing (this will carry an automatic for weeks suspension).

This will prove to be costly as Aodh Ruadh already have a injury weakened panel. Overall it was the Aodh Ruadh wides tally which along with the ease which the McCumhaill's forwards could score points from play that lost the game for Aodh Ruadh. David Downey had again a 'man of the match' performance in midfield with other good displays by the young Kilgannon brothers Chris and Kieran, Johnny Dolan, Peter Horan and Paul Cassidy in the full forward berth.
