Aodh Ruadh crowned county hurling league champions
Senior Hurling League
12 June 2013
Aodh Ruadh 0-13
For the first time since 1977, when men the calibre of Josie Boyle and Pat Fox were swinging the ash, senior hurling silverware has returned to the banks of the Erne. Aodh Ruadh defeated MacCumhaill's in Ballybofey tonight on a scoreline of 2-17 to 0-13 to secure the county league title.
In an evenly contested first half an Aidan Begley 65 managed to elude all defensive efforts to find its way to the back of the MacCumhaill's net. However, despite that goal it was still a draw game at half time, with everything to play for in the second half. And it proved the Ernesiders who were the hungrier for the challenge. Once again Aidan Begley hit the net, this time creating and finishing his own opportunity to give the visitors a decisive edge.
Overall it was a dramatically improved performance on last week's outing against Saint Eunan's, with Ballyshannon contesting strong and hard for those 50 50 balls and putting their bodies on the line all over the pitch. When you consider that when Aodh Ruadh last fielded in senior hurling they lost to MacCumhaill's by 25 points, this result underlines the turnaround in the club's hurling fortunes. That turnaround is down to the hard work and good attitude of players. The result is the perfect fillip ahead of the senior championship on 3rd July which sees Aodh Ruadh take on Setanta at The Cross.
