Aodh Ruadh convincing winners

Ladies Intermediate Championship final
22 August 2005
Aodh Ruadh 3-13
Kilcar 0-04

Peter Campbell reports from Tirconaill Park.

Aodh Ruadh Ladies bridged a ten year gap by lifting the Intermediate Championship on Sunday with an easy win over Kilcar.

Their only other adult championship success came at senior level in 1995 but this new group of players is based on a successful underage system with the experience provided by Louise Foy and Eleanor Rooney, both of whom had outstanding games on Sunday.

Kilcar had the first score, a good point from Sinead Cunningham and but for some wayward shooting, were well in the game in the opening quarter. Aodh Ruadh can thank goalkeeper, Lorraine Roper for some good saves during this period.

However, goals from Terri Gallagher and the impressive Ciara Buggy left the winners 2-3 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the first quarter.

By half-time further points from Donna Martin were cancelled by good efforts by Lisa Byrne and Majella O'Donnell to leave the interval score at 2-5 to 0-3.

The second half, however, proved to be mostly one-way traffic with Donna Martin hitting a third goal on 41 minutes to seal the victory.

Kilcar kept plugging away but all they had to show for their efforts was a late point from midfielder Niamh McFadden.

Ciara Buggy, Donna Martin and Louise Foy were immense for the winners with the only blight on the Buggy copybook being a 'Hughie McGowan moment' in the first half, driving through the Kilcar defence on a 40m run before 'fisting to the net' for a disallowed goal.

There were was a great all-round defensive display with great blocking limiting the Kilcar attack, while Annette Lloyd played a captain's role in midfield, while Terri Gallagher was also to the fore up front.
