Brave Aodh Ruadh come up short in final

Ladies under 13 B county final
18 October 2015
Aodh Ruadh 6-6
Saint Eunan's 11-19
Glenfin

Aodh Ruadh fought right to the end in this game, but Saint Eunan's just had a bit too much for them on the day, especially with the shooting of Shannon Cunningham who posted 8-8.

It was the Shamettes who got off to the better start, with Bridín Maguire raiding in for a goal. Saint Eunan's answered with two Shannon Cunningham frees, but a free from Bridín Maguire gave Ballyshannon a double scores advantage with eight minutes gone. However, that was to be Aodh Ruadh's last score in the half, before Bridín Maguire added two frees before the interval whistle.

In the interim Saint Eunan's took over. There were points from Ciara O'Donnell before Shannon Cunningham really started to find her shooting boots. In a 13 minute period she hit an unanswered 5-1 to steer the Letterkenny girls into a commanding lead. Further points from Ciara O'Donnell and Laoise Ryan left the scores at the turnover, Aodh Ruadh 1-3 Saint Eunan's 5-9.

The northern side didn't ease off any in the second half, but Aodh Ruadh finished strong, showing a never-say-die spirit that reflected great credit on them.

Points from Caoimhe Kelly, Niamh Harkin and Laoise Ryan arrived before Shannon Cunningham added her sixth goal of the morning.

Aodh Ruadh responded well though, first with Bridín Maguire hitting a free and then Leah O'Brien doing really well to hit the back of the net before Ella Clancy pointed to make it 2-5 to 6-12 with 38 minutes gone.

Saint Eunan's resumed the initiative and hit back with 2-5 before the Ernesiders hit another purple patch towards the end of the game. Again Roisín Daly showed great bravery before drilling to the net. Then Síofra Hughes roved up the pitch for a goal shot which flash just over the bar. Another driving run from Hughes created a goaling chance which Bridín Maguire slotted home calmly and then two minutes late Maguire struck for her third goal of the day.

Síofra Hughes concluded the scoring with a great run through the Eunan's defence before blasting home.

However, this was to be the Letterkenny side's day and they finished deserved winners and B county champions.

Enormous credit has to go the Aodh Ruadh team on a really brave team performance. From Leah O'Brien in goals, right up to Danielle Masterson-Burrows at corner forward, they gave the best they had on the day and left everything they had on the pitch. A very special word of mention has to go to all the players who played such a huge part in getting Aodh Ruadh to this county final. The great work of the management and mentors, Barry Ward, Claire Flood and Paddy Kelly must also be saluted.
