Saint Eunan's get defence off to good start

Division 1A
2 April 2006
Aodh Ruadh 0-9
Saint Eunan's 0-14

Peter Campbell reports from Father Tierney Park.

Saint Eunan's got the defence of the Democrat Cup off to a successful start in difficult conditions in Fr. Tierney Park on Sunday.

After an even enough first half the Letterkenny men pulled away in the final quarter. The emphasis was on youth at that stage with four minors who had been part of the Donegal team that defeated Tyrone the previous day in their line-up. Dualtach Molloy started the game and hit four points, while Paul Thornton, Mark McGowan, Ross Wherity were introduced.

Eunan's were without Rory Kavanagh and the injured Brendan Devenney, while Aodh Ruadh were missing Brian Roper and the injured Michael Ward and Pauric Buggy. The first six points were shared with Molloy, Damien Daly and Kevin Rafferty pointing for Eunans and Shane Ward, Val Murray and Thomas McPhelim pointing for Aodh Ruadh.

Three points from Paul Crampsie, Eugene Sullivan and Kevin Winston put Eunan's ahead but Barry Ward (2) and Val Murray levelled before Kevin Rafferty edged the Letterkenny men in front just before the break.

Two points from Val Murray had Aodh Ruadh in front at the start of the second half but Sean McEwen levelled. Anthony Boyle had a great goal chance but blazed over as Molloy again levelled.

The home side failed to raise another flag as Saint Eunan's piled on the points from Molloy (2), Rafferty, John Haran and Kevin Winston.
