Aodh Ruadh earn deserved win against Gaoth Dobhair

Division 1A
29 April 2006
Aodh Ruadh 1-10
Gaoth Dobhair 2-06

Sean Perry reports from Father Tierney Park.

Aodh Ruadh recorded their first home league win of the season on Saturday evening and were in no way flattered by the one point winning margin. Some fast passages of flowing football had their Gaeltacht opponents under pressure from the early stages and Val Murray was on the end of one of these moves after six minutes to drill to the net for the first score of the game.

At half-time, the Ballyshannon side led by 1-4 to 0-3, twenty minutes into the second half, that lead had been stretched to six points thanks to scores from Murray, Anthony Boyle and Stephen Ward. Ronan McNelis responded by knocking over a free for Declan Bonner's side and Gaoth Dobhair were handed a lifeline when Padraig McGarvey reacted quickest to a rebound to sidefoot to the net after 54 minutes.

Three minutes from time Gaoth Dobhair were awarded a very dubious penalty, McGarvey raised a green flag to level the match.

However, PJ McGowan's side rallied and when Brian Roper won a free deep in opposition territory on the stroke of full-time, up stepped Shane Ward to fire over a deserved winning point.
