Late Boyle goal seals Aodh Ruadh win
Senior Football Division 2
18 July 2010
Aodh Ruadh 2-11
Fanad Gaels 2-9
Father Tierney Park.
A late, late goal from Anthony Boyle earned Aodh Ruadh maximum points from their meeting with Fanad Gaels in Ballyshannon yesterday afternoon.
The visitors led by two points at the break (1-5 to 0-6) and when Paul Coyle added a second goal shortly after the re-start things looked good for the Gaels.
However, with Brian Roper, Michael 'Sticky' Ward and Barry Mulligan all prominent the home side slowly, but surely worked their way back into the contest.
Michael Sweeney scored a goal and a point for Fanad during the opening thirty minutes while Seamie Friel (3 points, 2 frees) and Sean McGovern were their other scorers.
At the other end of the field Michael Ward (3 points, 2 frees), Mulligan (2 frees) and Roper kept the score board ticking over.
Friel opened the second half with another point for Fanad before Coyle had the umpires waving the green flag for a second time shortly thereafter.
Points from Mulligan (2), Ward (2) and Roper kept Aodh Ruadh within touching distance before Anthony Boyle netted their first goal of the afternoon.
Two more Friel frees put Fanad back on level terms, but things were about to fall apart for the Gaels. Barry Mulligan bombed a 45 metre free in around the house where a Fanad defender fluffed his catch only to see before Anthony Boyle pounce and drive home a late, late strike to seal the points for Ballyshannon.
There was still time for Shane McAteer to split the uprights in injury time but it was a case of too little too late.
