Fine first half good enough for Aodh Ruadh
Senior Football Division 3
18 June 2011
Burt 0-6
Aodh Ruadh 1-9
Hibernian Park
Burt became Aodh Ruadh's fourth Inishowen victims of this year's division three league following an 0-6 to 1-9 win for the Ballyshannon men on a wet Saturday evening at Hibernian Park, Burt. This was the quintessential game of two halves Burt dominating the first while the visitors coasted the second.
With Burt eating up 60 percent of possession in the first half, they should have been further ahead than the 0-5 to 0-3 lead they carried into the break. Three points from Joe Boyle and a point each from Dara Grant and Niall Campbell were poor return for the lion's share of possession. Michael 'Sticky' Ward, David Dolan and Kerry Ryan accounted for the visitor's meagre first-half haul. The second half was a different story. Burt left their first-half tenacity behind them in the dressing room allowing Aodh Ruadh draw level within two minutes of the restart Brian Roper and Dolan both scoring from play. By the sixth minute they had gone two points up with Burt now struggling to cope. Indeed it would be all of 25 minutes before Burt registered a score, but that would be their only contribution of the half.
In the closing minutes Aodh Ruadh added 1-2, the impressive Michael Ward hitting both points while David Dolan scrambled the ball over the line to finish off any chance Burt had of a late come-back. Job done, the Ballyshannon men head back up the road with an immediate return to division two looking more likely by the week.
The referee must be complimented, his calm and measured handling of the game contributing to an absorbing contest.
