John Hughes reports from Father Tierny Park
Aodh Ruadh reserves had to pull out all the stops to see off a well-drilled Naomh Colmcille outfit in this absorbing contest. The visitors had the better of it in the first half and Aodh Ruadh did well just to keep in touch with Dermot Slevin hitting three (2f) and Ronan Matthews and James Kelly also pointing to leave the half time scores Aodh Ruadh 0-5 Naomh Colmcille 0-6.
Naomh Colmcille started the second half well with a fine score from their midfielder and continued to hold the homesters at arm's length. Aodh Ruadh stayed in contact though, Daniel Kelly and Calum 'Cookie' O'Halloran helping to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The key score of the game came with just about five minutes left. Dermot Slevin took a quick free to David Finnerty, who showed some burst of pace for a man just five hours back from his stag, before unleashing a goal-of-the-season effort to the keeper's left from all of 20 yards out. The visitors were left reeling and when Finnerty's thunderbolt was followed by a James Kelly score, the points were as good as in the bag. Aodh Ruadh finishing winners on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-9.
There were a lot of fine performances for the Ernesiders. Ryan Patton was excellent at full back, as was Niall Murray at centre half back. Chris McCabe was very good and exerted an increasing influence as the game went on. In the midfield James O'Donnell was a great presence, while up front Dermot Slevin kept things steady, James Kelly was a lively outlet and substitute David Hoey played an important part in the last two scores to win the game.
