Last gasp goal denies Ernesiders

Senior Division 3
11 April 2015
Naomh Colmcille 1-8
Aodh Ruadh 0-9
Páirc Colmcille

Aodh Ruadh were first off the mark with David McGurrin slipping over an effort from the left foot. The visitors continued to set the tone with a Diarmaid McInerney free, a long range placed ball from Peter Boyle after a foul on Cookie O'Halloran and a mighty point from Ronan McGurrin on the 45 into a strong breeze. Naomh Colmcille finally got off the mark through full forward Willie Gillespie. Newtowncunningham sent a few further shots wide before corner back Michael Friel raided up for a point to leave it double scores at half-time, 0-4 to 0-2 in favour of Ballyshannon.

The visitors had a strong breeze behind them in the second half and made use of it early in, with Eamonn McGrath delivering a smashing long range point from out on the left. Naomh Colmcille continued to work hard though and Joe Donaghy cancelled McGrath's effort out shortly after. Newtown hit a couple of wides before Philip Patton did well to get off a left foot shot to make it double scores once again. The homesters went through a further spell of fruitless pressure, forcing a good save from Peter Boyle and hitting another three wides, before Philip Patton put Aodh Ruadh four points to the good and put the scores at 0-3 to 0-7.

Points from Lynch and Doherty came ahead of a dangerous shot on the Aodh Ruadh goal with 12 minutes left, the framework coming to the rescue on that occasion. A Diarmaid McInerney free restored Aodh Ruadh's goal cushion and when sub Colm Kelly pointed the visitors looked to be in the ascendancy.

However that was to be as good as it got for the Ernesiders as Naomh Colmcille piled on the pressure in the closing stages. With two minutes left Joe Donaghy notched a free before blazing a goal effort over the bar. Moments later Peter Boyle was called on to make another vital stop before Lynch cut the deficit to the minimum in stoppage time.

Then came the sucker punch with midfielder Daniel Clarke hitting the net for the homesters four minutes into added time to leave Aodh Ruadh with nothing to show for the exertions in Newtown.
