Reserves come out on wrong end of goalfest

Senior Reserve Division 3
18 April 2015
Aodh Ruadh 3-8
Downings 3-5
David McLoone reports from Father Tierney Park

Aodh Ruadh played the first half with the wind at their backs, and were quick to take advantage with Mickey McNeely pointing before James Kelly added a goal in the opening few minutes. Downings then managed their first score of the afternoon, but a second Aodh Ruadh goal, this time from McNeely, put the hosts 2-1 to 0-1 ahead and seemingly in for an easy afternoon.

Downings had other ideas and quickly pulled a goal back. However, they then found themselves reduced to 14 men when their midfielder was shown a red card for lashing out at Aiden Murray. Both sides wnet on to exchange points, with McDonald getting the Erne men's score, before Niall Thomas got the last point of the half to leave the half time score at 2-3 to 1-3.

The visitors got the second half off to a blistering start with two points, before then adding two goals to swing the match in their favour and into a five point lead. Jamie McDonald pulled it back to a two point game when he stroked home a rebounded shot past the keeper.

Downings tagged on another two points, which were cancelled out by points from substitute David Hoey, and a second from Niall Thomas, leaving the score at 3-5 to 3-7 in favour of the visitors with about 10 minutes to play.

The hosts however simply were unable to find the scores to level the game, and will blame a series of wayward passes and an inability to retain possession for long enough to try to break the visitors deep defence. Downings managed the only other point of the game to win out by 3 points in the end.
