Aodh Ruadh make it two out of two
Intermediate Football Championship - Group 1
22 August 2015
Naomh Colmcille 3-7
Aodh Ruadh 3-13
Páirc Colmcille
A strong finish to this clash in Inishowen saw Aodh Ruadh make it two wins out of two in group 1 of the intermediate championship and put them in the driving seat for a place in the knock stages.
Aodh Ruadh started the game the brighter of the sides with David Dolan, Seamus Kane and Pauric Patton slotting points, Naomh Colmcille managing a solitary point in reply.
The Newtown men however then struck for the first goal of the game to edge into a one point lead.
That green flag didn't faze the visitors though and further points from Barry Mulligan and Diarmaid McInerney eased them back into the lead before the Ernesiders got a goal of their own.
Johnny Gallagher launched in a high ball and it was well gathered by Seamus Kane who tucked it neatly into the bottom corner to make it 1-5 to 1-1 in favour of Ballyshannon.
Newtowncunningham managed to hit back with a goal of their own, their number 10 finishing the ball to the net to put just a point between the sides again.
The hosts then enjoyed the best of it as the clock ticked down towards the break. Their corner back raided up for a point, which was followed by the lead point before Thomas McKinley hit the last score of the half to send Newtown in leading 2-4 to 1-5 at the interval.
Damian Cleary became the sixth Aodh Ruadh man to make the score sheet shortly into the second half, but Farmer was quickly on the mark for Naomh Colmcille to restore their two point cushion. Michael 'Sticky' Ward took a good score of his lesser used left peg before a raking point of the boot of Newtown's number 11 made it 2-6 to 1-7.
Aodh Ruadh cut the deficit again with a Diarmaid McInerney free, but the visitors were hit with a hammer blow when an under-powered shot for a point dropped under the crossbar to give Naomh Colmcille a four point margin as time ebbed away.
Ballyshannon got the perfect response though. Straight from the kick out they won possession and drove it in to David Dolan who burst through Newtown cover before hammering home.
The Naomh Colmcille number four got up for a point, but the momentum was now decidedly with the Ernesiders.
Barry Mulligan notched off a point before another score from David Dolan levelled the game at 3-7 to 2-10.
Aodh Ruadh then pressed into the lead with points from Barry Mulligan, Cookie O'Halloran and David Dolan before the coup de grace. Great work again from David Dolan as he set up Diarmaid McInerney for a goal which left Aodh Ruadh with the victory on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-13.
