Football
Our senior and reserve footballers should return to action this Friday when their postponed fixtures against Termon take place in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The reserve game will throw in at 6.30pm, with the senior game going off at 8pm.

Well done to Aaron Cullen and Eoghan Kelly and the Donegal minors as they dug deep to get past Monaghan in the Ulster quarter-final last week. It finished Donegal 1-9 Monaghan 0-10 in Clones as Cullen kept a second successive clean sheet. Once again, we wish Donegal the best of luck this Wednesday when they face Armagh in the Ulster Championship semi-final. The game throws in at 7.30pm in Healy Park, Omagh.

The under 13s took on Four Masters on Monday evening and gave one of the top teams in the county a serious game of it. The whole team was brilliant right through the the match. Their tackling and defence was very strong and going forward we always looked like scoring. The whole team's work rate was unbelievable. Four Masters got a few very handy calls which allowed them to inflate their scoreline in the last 5 minutes, but the final result does not reflect the game in any way. It finished Aodh Ruadh 2-6 Four Masters 3-13, but managers Paul Sheridan and Paul O'Loughlin were absolutely thrilled with the boys' display. The Aodh Ruadh scorers were Corey Sheridan (1-2), MJ Ward (1-1), Eoghan Gallagher (0-2), and Antoin Duffy (0-1).

The under 11s have a busy week coming up. The team train as normal on Monday from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. On Thursday the squad are on the road to play Four Masters away. All players are to be in Donegal Town for 5pm, with a 5.30pm throw-in. On Saturday we welcome Dungloe to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and all players are to be up for 10.30am, with a 11am throw in.

The under 9s had a very competitive outing in Ardara on Saturday. All 36 boys enjoyed game time over three games. Training continues as normal on Friday evening. The time may change owing to the senior game, but further details will be posted on the team WhatsApp group.

Hurling
The senior hurlers hope to finally return to action this Friday when they take on Setanta down at the Cross in the Junior County Championship. Throw-in at Donaghmore Park is down for 7.30pm.

Our under 17s had another game fall foul of Covid 19, with their game against Saint Eunan's being postponed. They are due to play Coolera-Strandhill in the Táin Óg this week and are looking forward to getting back on the pitch again. Best of luck to the players and management.

Manorhamilton visited Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Thursday for what proved to be a stern test for our boys in the under 15 Táin Óg League. Our opponents were no pushovers, proving to be physically strong, and more than capable of competing right across the field. However some wayward shooting from the visitors meant that they failed to register a score in the first half, and we led 0-3 to 0-0 at the half time break. A five-minute scoring blitz where we scored 3-4 saw us kill of any chance of a come-back our visitors may have had, effectively ending the game as a contest. Manorhamilton kept battling right to the very end, and the physicality we faced will stand to us for the rest of the season. We had some fantastic performances across the field with Cian McDonald being excellent in defence, Michael Clancy in the half backs, whilst captain on the evening Dara O'Mahoney had a strong second half. Garvey Meade at midfield had his best game of the year, and Joe Gibbions, played well in the half forwards, and half back line when switched to there. This week we are at home to Setanta in the Donegal league, throwing in at 7.30pm.

Our u13 hurlers made the long trip to Dungloe last Thursday in their fourth game in the South Donegal league. Aodh Ruadh were down on numbers, but those who took to the field gave all for the green and white and all 19 players got game time. The took Ballyshannon lads took control from early on in the match and were relentless in their pursuit of the away points. While there were many good individual performances on the field, it was the way the team played as a unit that stood out. Right from the goalkeeper through defence, midfield and the forwards, their support play, blocking, hooking and scoring was exceptional. They came away with full points on a scoreline of Aodh Ruadh 6-9 Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair 0-3. As always, a huge thank you to all of the players parents for driving.
The team continued their winning ways in their second outing of the week against Manorhamilton at home on Sunday morning. The Ballyshannon lads were slow out of the blocks in the first quarter. This was unusual for this group of boys who have dominated in both the Donegal and Táin Óg league in all of their previous six competitive matches. The half time break and team talk seemed to energise the lads and from the start of the second half they never looked back and they piled relentless pressure on the Manorhamilton defence. Our tough defenders only conceded three points with Jayden McGrath Clyne keeping a clean sheet between the posts. At the end of 60 minutes the Ernesiders came away victors on a winning margin of 22 points securing a semi-Táin Óg league final place. Every player in the Aodh Ruadh jersey got game time, which is essential for the development of each player and the team. Special mention to one of our youngest players Harvey Power who came on and bagged a personal haul of 1-1. This week the lads now have a week off from hurling, with their next game being in the Donegal league, on Thursday 12th August at 7.30pm.

This Sunday our under 7s and under 9s travel to Ballybofey to play MacCumhaill's in our third blitz of the year. The players have really enjoyed their games so far this year and are really looking forward to their next blitz.

Ladies
Aodh Ruadh made the trip to Ardara on Sunday morning, where there was an unseasonable nip in the air. It was tit for tat in the early stages with points from Katie O'Brien and Cáit Gillespie point making it Ardara 0-3 Aodh Ruadh 0-2 with five minutes played. However Ardara hit the net in the sixth minute and that gave the homesters a cushion they were able to build on over the rest of the game. Initially Aodh Ruadh responded well with a free from Cáit Gillespie and a point from Brídín Maguire. However a two minute period where Ardara hit 2-1 saw the Ernesiders falling further adrift. Ballyshannon regrouped after the water break and a Cáit Gillespie point got the side back in the hunt. That score was followed a minute later by a well-taken goal with Brídín Maguire winning the long ball in and slipping off for Terri Gallagher to net. When Tanya McPartland followed that up with a point in the 21st minute it was Ardara 3-4 Aodh Ruadh 1-6. The sides then swapped points, McPartland again raising the white flag for the visitors, before Ardara went on another punishing scoring burst in the period before the half-time whistle with a 1-3 blast punctuated only by a Cáit Gillespie point. There were nine points in it at the turnaround and Ardara looked like they were going to pick up where they left off as they hit the first two points of the new half. However now it was the Shamettes turn to hit a purple patch and two points from the immaculate Katie O'Brien, a point from Tanya McPartland and a well worked goal finished by Cáit Gillespie left five between the sides at the second half water break. Scenting the possibility of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat Aodh Ruadh pressed hard in the second half, and were rewarded with two excellent points from Donna Martin and Katie O'Brien. The visitors also interlinked well to create the opening for what could have been a game changing goal, but Terri Gallagher's placed shot was superbly saved by the Ardara netminder. After that Ardara played keep ball and tagged on points on the break to run out 4-14 to 2-12 winners. A good tough game of football, which the girls will take lots of learning from. Erin O'Loughlin and Tanya McPartland worked like dogs in the middle of the pitch, Cáit Gillespie was a great threat attacking through-out, while defensively Anna Rafferty, Sara Gallagher and Ella Clancy all contested hard. The junior game against MacCumhaill's didn't go ahead, and it looks like that will take place this coming weekend, with the intermediate team on a rest week.

Hard luck to Orla Keon and the Donegal minor ladies who lost out in extra time to Monaghan in the Ulster Ladies Minor Championship semi-final. It finished Donegal 3-15 Monaghan 4-16 after a titanic battle in Lifford with Keon giving it everything in midfield. It was a case of contrasting emotions for the county under 16s and Cara O'Loughlin who also lined out at midfield as Donegal won their Silver Final decider against Armagh with a 4-9 to 3-5 victory in Lifford.

There were few signs of ring rust as the under 16s comfortably accounted for Termon in their first competitive match in three weeks. They held the visitors scoreless in the first half, while goals from Cádhla Dolan and Cara O'Loughlin and points from Jodie Meade and O'Loughlin had Aodh Ruadh 2-6 to the good at the interval. It was more of the same in the second half as the Ernesiders continued to dominate with Jodie Meade scoring some exceptional goals, Cara O'Loughlin picking off 1-1 and Annie Keon also netting to cap a fine personal performance. It finished 10-7 to 1-2 with stand out performances in defence from Ava Doherty and Fódhla Sheerin helping keep Termon chances to a minimum. A great team performance from the homesters with some lovely passages of passing play. Check out aodhruadh.org for a gallery of pictures from the game. The under 16s now face a long trip this Tuesday when they head to Dunfanaghy to take on Saint Michael's, throw-in at 7pm

The under 14s were in Buncrana on Saturday for their fourth outing of the league. They made it four wins from four, but were thoroughly tested by a determined Buncrana outfit and it took a full squad effort over the course of the 60 minutes to earn the victory. Captain for the day Cádhla Dolan lead by example throughout, especially when midfielder Maura O'Sullivan was forced to exit the fray just 20 minutes into what had been and outstanding display. There was a good spread of scorers with Dolan, Abbie Gallagher, Andrea Moore, Niamh Duffy, Emer McDevitt and Ciara Larkin all on the mark. The defence had to weather an attacking storm from Buncrana, but the outstanding Megan Murphy marshalled matters wonderfully with ability beyond her years. Between the sticks Caitlin McGrory produced an incredible penalty save, as well as a great reaction save to put another shot over for a point. It finished 6-9 to 2-4 after a great contest between two committed sides. This Saturday the girls are at home against Ardara in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 4.30pm.

The under 12s have no fixtures this week, but training continues as usual on Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm and Saturday from 11am to 12 noon.

Under 10 training continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.15pm at Coláiste Cholmcille.

Fixtures
Where fixtures are changed, deferred or cancelled the Park / Development Committee should be notified promptly so that other requests for activities can be accommodated. This is not happening currently in all cases. It is not possible to advance circulate the usual weekly programme of fixtures as it is not clear as we go to print what home games we will have this week.

New Father Tierney Park playing surface progress
As we enter week five of this major project, Prunty Contracts continue to make steady progress. The first stage of the project has involved earth removal and storage and a significant level of rock breaking on the Hospital side of the pitch where underlying rock was at a high level and clay cover minimal. Very substantial quantities of rock have been removed to the Belleek side of the grounds. This week a heavy-duty rock-crusher comes on site and the product of this process will be used to bring up the pitch levels on that end of the field. Our Park/Development Committee has provided a safe viewing area past the Aras building from which club members and those interested can observe the progress of the work. All club members are asked to mail friends of Aodh Ruadh and of Ballyshannon living away from home to seek their support by sponsoring A Sod through Klubfunder.com, any member of the fund-raiser Working Group or by contacting anyone who is part of the club. Any Ballyshannon person living away from home who is in a position to assist with this fundraiser in their new abode should contact Tom Daly, David McLoone or Michael Daly.

Sponsor A Sod
As the 70th anniversary of the opening of Father Tierney Park approaches in 2024, a massive programme of work has commenced at the grounds which will result in a new sand-based playing field and associated building works. To fund this development Aodh Ruadh have launched one of their biggest fund-raising efforts in decades, asking the public to ‘Sponsor A Sod’ at €50 each to help meet the costs of this ambitious plan. A permanent display bearing the names of donors will be erected in a prominent position at the Park.
Our Working Group members are out and about promoting our Buy a Sod campaign Any club member who can help to promote this should contact any member of this Group or any of the Park / Development Committee Officers for brochures and vouchers. Likewise if you would like to become part of the Working Group to act as a key seller. There is a lot of interest locally and further afield in seeing the Father Tierney Park project succeed. Thanks to all who have supported the campaign so far.
More than 25 Aodh Ruadh club members have joined the working group to actively promote this fund-raising campaign and to sell sods. The working group is as follows: Sabrina Brosnan, Michael Daly, Sarah Daly, Tom Daly, William Doogan, Gerard Ferguson, Conal Gallagher, Johnny ‘Mannix’ Gallagher, Paul Gillespie, Jim Kane, Donagh Keon, Diarmaid Keon, Patsy Kilgannon, John Larkin Jr, Dinny Loughlin, Sylvester Maguire, Brian Murray, Val Murray, Mick McGrath, Packie McGrath, Pat McGrath, David McLoone, Philip McLoone, Pauric McShea, David O’Donnell, Sean O’Mahoney, Barry O’Neill, John Patton and Gregory Sweeney. Those promoting this fund-raiser can make any returns they have at Sunday's games in Pairc Aoidh Ruaidh. See David McLoone, Michael Daly or Tom Daly.
Please contact any of the following if you wish to volunteer: Tom Daly (087-2390410), David McLoone (087-7760172), Philip McLoone (086-4053008), Conal Gallagher (086-2112812), Patsy Kilgannon (087-2372128), or Michael Daly (086-9171949).

Football
Aodh Ruadh turned on the style to see off Termon 4-12 to 2-7 on Friday evening. Barry Ward's men bounced back from last week's defeat against MacCumhaill's with a display which oozed class. Termon started brightly, leading 1-1 to 0-1 in the early stages, but Aodh Ruadh quickly settled and had edged a point ahead by the first water break. They then outscored Termon once more in the third quarter to go in at the interval leading 0-8 to 1-2. The Ernesiders got their first goal of the game early in the second half with Philip Patton starting and finishing the move. Ballyshannon continued to pick off points with Termon only capable of mounting sporadic resistance. Michael McKenna netted his side's second goal after the water break, before then turning provider with a sensational pass for Nathan Boyle to collect on the run and blast to the back of the net. Ryan Granaghan then applied the coup de grace with a well-worked goal which sealed the result. Check out aodhruadh.org for a gallery of pictures from this game. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows; Karl O'Brien; Mark McGlynn, Colm Kelly, Conor Patton; Johnny Gethins (0-1), Eddie Lynch, Kyle Murray; Nathan Boyle (1-2), Eamonn McGrath; Philip Patton (1-5,1f), Darren Drummond (0-1), Diarmaid McInerney; Cian Rooney (0-1), Shane McGrath (0-1), Oisin Rooney. Subs: Michael McKenna (1-1) for Rooney 16 minutes; Niall Murray for McInerney half-time; Oisin Rooney and Ryan Granaghan (1-0) for C Rooney and D Drummond 46 minutes.

Goals proved the big difference between the sides on Saturday as Termon got the better of the Aodh Ruadh reserves on a 3-11 to 0-9 scoreline in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Next weekend sees our seniors bidding to secure their return to Division 1 football when they travel to take on Naomh Columba. The game is on Friday with an 8pm throw-in. The reserves also tackle Glen this weekend with their game going off at 2pm on Saturday in Páirc na nGael.

Aaron Cullen, Eoghan Kelly and the Donegal minors now have an Ulster final to plan for after seeing off the challenge of Armagh last Wednesday in Healy Park. It finished Donegal 1-6 Armagh 0-5 in Healy Park as Cullen kept a third successive clean sheet, producing one crucial stop in the first-half which was right from the top drawer. Once again, we wish Donegal the very best of luck this Friday when they face Tyrone in the Ulster Championship final at 7.30pm, venue to be confirmed.

In the last round of the under 13 league Aodh Ruadh and Kilcar had a great tussle in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Saturday with the game finishing honours even after the 60 minutes, the final score Aodh Ruadh 4-7 Kilcar 2-13. Jayden McGrath Clyne and Shaun McGarrigle were both absolutely outstanding during their stints the goals. Corey Sheridan top scored for the Ernesiders with 3-2 to his credit, while Eoghan Gallagher raised the other green flag and added two points for good measure. Also on the score sheet were MJ Ward (0-2) and Joseph Gibbions. Head to aodhruadh.org for a great gallery of pictures from the match. The lads have a shield final on Wednesday night, with venue and time still to be confirmed.

The under 11 boys had a busy week. They travelled to Four Masters on Thursday evening, and turned in their best performances of the season, against a strong Four Masters team. We hosted Dungloe on Saturday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and again played really well. Four tightly contested games were played, with our boys winning on the score board, but more importantly improving their performances game on game. We have a gallery of pictures from the Dungloe games on aodhruadh.org. We train again this week on Monday from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and on Thursday on the Coláiste Cholmcille field from 6pm to 7pm.

Under 9 training continues as normal on Friday evening at 6.15pm. Four Masters will be the visitors on Saturday for the first home game of the season. Throw in at 11.30am.

Hurling
The senior hurlers got their junior championship campaign off to the perfect start with a 1-19 to 0-16 over Setanta at the Crossroads on Sunday. It was a great performance from the Ernesiders with Aodh Ruadh leading throughout. A gritty Setanta outfit did come within a point of Ballyshannon with five minutes remaining, but Aodh Ruadh rallied to win by six. Next up for Aodh Ruadh is the visit of Saint Eunan's to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh next Sunday at 2.30pm.

Our under 17s returned to action last week facing up to Coolera Strandhill in the Táin Og in Páirc Aodh Ruadh. On a wet night, our lads produced a very strong first half performance and were leading well at half-time. Coolera rallied strongly at the start of the second half, and gradually worked themselves back into the game. A brace of pre water-break goals had them leading going into the last quarter. Our lads showed great composure to steady themselves and get a couple of scores right after the break, and pulled away to win by a margin of eight points. Next up is Carndonagh in the Donegal league on Thursday evening.

Our under 15s had their last home game of the Donegal league against Setanta. The opening quarter was hotly contested and there was very little between the teams in the opening exchanges. As the half wore on, our superior goal threat saw us pull away from Setanta, and lead comfortably at half-time. The final result was a comprehensive win for Aodh Ruadh. All of the panel performed very well, and there were some notable performances from Corey Sheridan, Killian McPhelim and cousins Liam and Eoin Doogan. Next up is Ballina at a neutral venue for our final game in the Táin Óg league on Wednesday evening.

The under 13s had an impressive outing against an amalgamated South Leitrim hurling team playing under the banner of Saint Mary’s Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday morning. Despite bad weather and early start, 23 out of the 24 strong panel made the trip to Sean Mac Diarmada Park. The game began with a stiff defence from the home team however with some scores from Dáithí Sheerin, Joseph Gibbions, Corey Sheridan, and Eoghan McCadden in the first third, some distance was put between the teams. Changes were made in the second third with eight new Aodh Ruadh players introduced, which only served to strengthen Ballyshannon’s momentum; adding a further 1-8 to their tally, only conceding a single point in this period. The last third saw a Saint Mary’s comeback as the Leitrim team scored two goals in quick succession however the boys dug deep, and the full back-line of Rossa McAuley, Gareth Brennan and William Ryan denied Saint Mary’s for the rest of the game. Aodh Ruadh scored a further 3-7, with some fantastic scores from Dylan Owens, Sean O’Neill and Corey Sheridan, adding to his outstanding personal tally of 1-12. A last-minute goal came just before the whistle for Joey Daly who received the biggest cheer of the day after assisting with numerous scores, and just narrowly missing out getting his name on the score sheet. Special mention goes to the stellar midfield partnership of Joseph Gibbions and Anton O’Loughlin who was returning from injury and put in a man of the match performance. Final score: Aodh Ruadh 7-21 St Mary’s 2-1. The team on the day was Finn Doogan, Rossa McAuley, Gareth Brennan, William Ryan, Sean Maguire, Sean O’Neill (1-0), Oisin McCadden, Joe Gibbions (0-6), Anton O’Loughlin, Eoghan McCadden (1-0), Corey Sheridan (1-12), Shay Winters (1-0), Joey Daly (1-0), Dáithí Sheerin (2-2), Anton Duffy, Shaun McGarrigle, Alex Kerrigan, Ethan Kerrigan, Dara Vaughn, Allister Cian, Harvey Power, Dylan Owens (0-1), and Jayden McGrath Clyne. The boys have a busy week ahead starting with Setanta at home in the Donegal league on Thursday night. After topping their group in the Táin Óg League with an unbeaten run, they will play the respective group winners from Tyrone, Derry, and Fermanagh on Saturday in the semi-finals. These are provisionally pencilled in for the Derry Centre of Excellence at Owenbeg.

Our youngest hurlers, the under 7s and under 9s, had a great morning on Sunday when they travelled to Ballybofey for a blitz with MacCumhaill's. In total we had 30 players take part and each and every one made their club proud. The conditions weren't ideal, and I'm sure all the parents there were grateful for the shelter of the stand, but our players showed great toughness in braving the elements. Thank you to all the parents for travelling, our COVID officers, and to our coaches for managing their teams. We look forward to hosting MacCumhaill's for the return fixture.

Ladies
There was no action for the Aodh Ruadh ladies last weekend with the MacCumhaill's unable to field for the Junior game. This Sunday both teams are in action at home. The seniors face Downings in the Intermediate league which the juniors take on Naomh Columba. Throw-in times still to be decided.

The Aodh Ruadh under 16 girls found themselves on the road again as they made the long trip to Dunfanaghy to take on Saint Michael's last Tuesday. The Ballyshannon girls made a bright start to the match with Cara O’Loughlin leading the charge towards the Dunfanaghy goals time and time again. There were also great penetrating runs from Annie Keon, Dairín Sweeney and Lauren Foy who tormented the Saint Michael's defence and created a number of scores from the ever-reliable Cadhla Dolan and Niamh McGloin. While the Aodh Ruadh girls had taken the lead by the half-time break the Saint Michael's team were proving a tough, physical opponents. The girls had to remain strong and focused as they took to the pitch for the second half, but, in a similar fashion to the first half, the girls showed great determination and drive and with some courageous interceptions from Ciara Larkin and Fodhla Sheerin in defence and Mollie Travers in goals they managed to keep the Dunfanaghy scores to a minimum. Some peculiar refereeing decisions allowed the home team to put a few more points on the board but the Aodh Ruadh team remained resolute and were full value for their victory. With another win under their belt, the girls march on to the final two games in their division with full points on the board. This Tuesday, 10th August, they welcome Burt to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh for their penultimate must win game.

It was disappointing outing for the under 14s against Ardara in their top of the table Division 1 clash last Saturday. The Ballyshannon girls never got going, and despite an outstanding defensive display it was the visitors who took the points. Best for Aodh Ruadh was the outstanding Megan Murphy at full back. Caitlin McGrory ran her close between the posts with a number of top drawer saves. Megan got great support from Rebecca Downey, Katie McGowan and Sadhbh Hughes. Up the pitch Aoife Travers and Roise Conlon gave it their all. Emily McNamee starred in an attack which didn't see a lot of ball with Cádhla Dolan and Ciara Larkin accounting for the Aodh Ruadh scores. There are pictures from the game up at aodhruadh.org. This Saturday the girls are at home for their final game of the season against Dungloe in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 1pm.

The under 12 training continues as usual on Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm and Saturday from 11am to 12 noon.

Under 10 training continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.15pm at Coláiste Cholmcille.

Pitch Bookings
Each club sub-committee is asked to please mail an updated list covering the next four weeks to Tom Daly indicating fixture, time and opposition. Despite the deluge of rain over the weekend we got five official fixtures played in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Saturday. Thanks to our Park work crew who were on last week and had everything in tip top shape despite the worst the elements could throw at them.

Work progressing in Father Tierney Park
Despite the recent inclement weather a huge programme of work is continuing on building a new playing surface at the Father Tierney Park. Members of the Working Group who have taken on the job of promoting and selling the Sponsor a Sod campaign are asked to get their returns back to Tom Daly, David McLoone and Michael Daly on an on-going basis. Thanks to the many who have already supported this fund-raiser which is of vital importance to the funding of this major investment in Father Tierney Park.

Football
Pride of place this week goes to our senior footballers who returned to the top flight of Donegal football with a polished display in Glencolumcille's Páirc na nGael last Friday. It finished Aodh Ruadh 1-11 Naomh Columba 0-11, with the visitors getting their nose in front early on and managing to preserve that lead, weathering a late Glen surge to clinch the points and promotion. Scores from Philip Patton and Shane McGrath got Aodh Ruadh off the mark before the game's only goal arrived in the tenth minute. It came courtesy of one of Aodh Ruadh's most impressive creative talents this term, with Michael McKenna applying the finish from close range. A trio of points from the ever-reliable Philip Patton, made it 1-8 to 0-5 at the turnaround. The homesters had the breeze in the second half and put in a gritty effort to try and reel Ballyshannon back in. Two Naomh Columba points were answered by a fisted score from Colm Kelly, before another couple of Glen points cut the lead for Barry Ward's charges back to a goal. With time running out Aodh Ruadh added scores courtesy of Cian Rooney and Nathan Boyle to see out the game and seal the win. As well as securing promotion the result also saw Aodh Ruadh securing the Division 2 title with a game to spare. The team and scorers were: Karl O’Brien; Mark McGlynn, Conor Patton, Colm Kelly (0-1); Johnny Gethins, Eddie Lynch, Kyle Murray; Eamon McGrath, Nathan Boyle (0-3, 1f); Phillip Patton (0-5, 4f), Michael McKenna (1-0), Niall Murray, Cian Rooney (0-1), Shane McGrath (0-1), Oisin Rooney. Substitute: Jason Granaghan for Niall Murray. Returning to Division 1 is a massive lift for the club and it is great to see top flight football back in the town once again. Huge credit to Barry Ward, his management team and the whole squad on the achievement. The seniors have a fortnight to savour their victory before taking on Downing son Saturday 28th August in their final league game.

Our reserves' scheduled clash with Glen fell by the wayside, Covid issues once again forcing postponement. They are scheduled to take on Downings this coming weekend.

Hard luck to Aaron Cullen, Eoghan Kelly and the Donegal minors on their defeat to Tyrone in Brewster Park last week. Donegal stayed with the hot favourites for much of the game, but a finishing flourish saw the Red Hands take the provincial title.

The minors return to action this Friday with a trip to Glenswilly, throw in at 7pm.

The under 13's league campaign culminated with a Shield final last Wednesday evening in Mountcharles. It was set up for an exciting clash following a rip-roaring encounter between the sides the week previous. However, Kilcar opted to go for a heavily defensive strategy this time out though, and reaped the dividends with a 4-14 to 3-5 victory. Once again the Aodh Ruadh lads gave it their all, but they found it difficult to make headway against the crowded Kilcar rearguard. Top scorer for Ballyshannon on the night was the ever-dependable Joseph Gibbions who hit 2-2, with Corey Sheridan netting the Ernesiders other goal. MJ Ward clipped two points with Sean O'Neill completing the Aodh Ruadh scoring.

Under 11 training continues this week on Monday from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and on Thursday in the Coláiste Cholmcille field from 6pm to 7pm.

The under 9s put in their best performance of the season on Saturday with four very competitive games against Four Masters. We have a great gallery of pictures from the blitz up at aodhruadh.org. The lads are on the road again this Saturday for the reverse fixture in Donegal Town. Throw in at 11.30am. Training continues as normal on Friday evening at 6.15pm.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh played Saint Eunan's in the second round of the Junior Hurling Championship on Sunday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The home side mixed the good and the bad in this game. They got off to a good start but failed to build on it for most of the first half. In the last 10 minutes of the half they played their best hurling scoring a brace of goals and some good long-range points. The second half again saw some sluggish hurling from the Ballyshannon lads. While the workrate was good the side were guilty of some poor finishing. The game was over as a contest long before the full-time whistle as the Ernesiders ran out convincing winners, Aodh Ruadh 3-17 Saint Eunan's 1-5 the final scoreline. Aodh Ruadh now have two wins from our first two outings, but the lads know there is much room for improvement and tougher challenges lie ahead. Head to aodhruadh.org for a gallery of pictures from the match.

Our under 17s play Buncrana this week in the Donegal league at the Donegal Centre of Excellence in Convoy. Their game against Carndonagh last week was postponed.

Our under 15s had a great win playing Ballina in the Táin Óg league at the Sligo Centre of Excellence in Scarden. With a number of under 13s having a busy few days ahead playing both codes, the decision was taken to field with only our under 15s. Ballina provided robust opposition, and in the early exchanges there was very little between the sides. A Jack McCadden goal just before the water break left Ballyshannon in a strong position, and as the first half wore on more goals in the second quarter extended the lead going into the break. The second half saw Ballina rally strongly, coming back in to the game scoring some fine points from play, as they began to get a grip in the half back line and midfield. However, as we have seen from the team this year, they were able to compose themselves, and saw out the game after the water break, with Tommy Clyne putting the icing on the cake with a goal from 20 metres, after soling through the Ballina defence. We had some strong performances right through the team, with Killian Bradshaw and Lennon Canny playing well in defence, Caelum McNulty dominant in midfield and Jun Hui Lin excelling in the half forward line. The side have a break now, with our last Donegal league game on Thursday August 26th against MacCumhaill's. The side's Táin Óg finals weekend is clashing with confirmations, so we await for a date for the rescheduled fixture.

Last Thursday the under 13 Hurlers welcomed Setanta to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh for their fifth game in the Donegal League. To date the boys have remained unbeaten in the league and on Thursday evening they continued in their winning ways. From the first whistle the lads displayed their now familiar composure on the ball and their confidence and style of their play put immediate pressure on the Setanta defence. Points and goals were rapidly accumulated, with scores of note from Ethan Kerrigan, Shay Winters, Joe Gibbions, Daithi Sheerin and their marksman Corey Sheridan. The Ballyshannon mentors used the bench to great effect with every member of the squad contributing to another fantastic team display. Despite the dominance of Aodh Ruadh the Setanta team never gave up the fight and picked off several scores to the delight of the travelling supporters, but the Ballyshannon boys showed plenty of hard work and commitment and battled for every ball like their life depended on it with only the final whistle giving relief to the Setanta team. The final score was Aodh Ruadh 6-17 Setanta 3-5.
With the Donegal league game behind them the under 13 squad travelled to the Táin Óg finals in the Derry Centre of Excellence in Owenbeg on Saturday. The first semi-final saw Aodh Ruadh take the field against a fancied Saint Finbar's team from Derry. An early score from Corey Sheridan created by a clearance from Gareth Brennan at full back settled the Ballyshannon lads and the combined efforts of the six Aodh Ruadh forwards saw Sheridan accumulate a personal tally of 4-3 in the first half. Aodh Ruadh finished the half 6-6 to 0-0 to the good. The second half began with a fantastic team score finished off by Eoghan McCadden to the back of the net. Corey Sheridan popped over a point from distance to bring his semi-final to an end with a substitution early in the second half. Joe Gibbions and Shay Winters showed their power and accuracy from midfield scoring from play with two well taken points from distance. The strength in depth of the squad was demonstrated by all nine subs being used in this second half and still forging ahead on the score board and helping Jayden McGrath Clyne maintain a clean sheet between the large goals.
The Final was against Duiche Neill of Tyrone. Aodh Ruadh won the throw-in and again Joe Gibbions got the score board moving with an early point. Corey Sheridan picked up from where he left off in the semi-final with a catch from the opposition puck out and a simple tap-over point, quickly following up with two goals. The second goal roused the Tyrone club who pushed forward and looked to be through for a certain score, however Jaden McGrath Clyne pulled off the save of the match while delivering a rapid clearing puck beginning the next Aodh Ruadh attack and score. The first half ended with Aodh Ruadh leading 3-10 to no score. Corey Sheridan in an exhibition of point scoring knocked over another few at the start of the second half. Joe Gibbions and Anton O'Loughlin dominated the middle of the park, Gibbions stepping forward to score and support the attack, O'Loughlin supporting incursions into defence and countless tackles ending any Duiche Neill attack. Again the bench was emptied for the second half and the team pushed on. Shay Winters and Joe Gibbions got a couple each with the unstoppable McCadden boys Oisin and Eoghan getting a point apiece. Daithi Sheerin, after battling through two defenders, added to the scoreline with his second of the day. Fittingly the last score was dispatched over the bar by the player of the tournament Corey Sheridan.
Aodh Ruadh were deserved winners on a final score of 3-22 to 0-0. Impressively the 24 Ernesiders kept two table topping teams scoreless for 80 minutes. A complete team performance backed up by a fantastic group of supporters who have carried our lads all over the Northwest and supported the management throughout the year. Training continues this Tuesday from 6.15pm with details to be confirmed regarding an upcoming home game against MacCumhaill's.

Our younger hurlers are coming towards the end of their season, and will be training until the first week of September. Any parent that wants their child to try hurling for the last few weeks with a view to playing next year is more than welcome, just contact John Larkin on 086-1076883.

Ladies
Given the proliferation of Covid across the county, it was a minor triumph which saw Aodh Ruadh field two adult ladies teams to fulfil simultaneous fixtures. It's a tribute to all the ladies who togged out for both sides. The senior ladies clash with Downings was played in Father Tierney Park. The Aodh Ruadh ladies made the best of their chances in the opening half to go in at the interval with a nine point advantage. They pressed on in the second half against a young Downings side to run out 8-14 to 1-8 victors. It was a fine attacking return, but some of the best displays came in defence, where Saoirse McDevitt, Sara Gallagher and Caitlin McGarrigle let nothing past them. In the middle of the pitch Tanya McPartland, Erin O'Loughlin, Cara O'Loughlin, and Orla Keon gave Ballyshannon a great platform to build from, with McPartland also taking some lovely scores. Up front Cáit Gillespie finished with 3-4 to her credit, while the stylish Donna Martin also contributed handsomely to the final score. Ciara Gillespie bagged a brace with Katie O'Brien also on the mark for the homesters We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Meanwhile, out in Bundoran's Gaelic Park, the reserve ladies took on the challenge of table toppers Naomh Columba with 13 players pulling on the white and green. The odds were always stacked against the Ernesiders, but they made light of them to produce some nice passages of football. Two early frees from Briana Maher had the sides level, before Meabh Rooney showed great reactions to palm a dropping ball into the net and send Aodh Ruadh into a 1-2 to 0-4 lead. That was as good as it was to get though as Naomh Columba produced a point taking exhibition to ease out into a comfortable lead. That's not to say the Shamettes didn't give as good as they got, with Briana Maher adding a point before showing her killer instinct to smash a 20-metre free to the back of the net. Sarah Daly added a well-constructed point just before the break to leave it 2-4 to 3-12 at half-time. In the second half Aodh Ruadh faced up the slope and into a freshening breeze. With tiring legs, it was a case of keeping the heads up and going to the end, and the girls did that with aplomb. Amanda Mahon took a lovely point, with Briana Maher also adding to her tally in a game where the final scoreline probably didn't do justice to the courage of the Aodh Ruadh performance.

The intermediate ladies are down to travel to face Carndonagh next Sunday morning, while the junior side are due to have their outstanding fixtures against MacCumhaill's at some point in the next week.

The under 16 final league game against Urris scheduled for Tuesday, 17th August has been postponed and instead the girls will welcome Manorhamilton under 16s for a challenge match in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh throwing in at 6pm. Tomorrow evening will also give the girls the opportunity to have the formal handover of the new under 16 jerseys thanks to the generosity of our sponsor Aaron Coughlin. We are looking forward to seeing a few supporters up at the match to cheer the girls on.

It wasn't the way that the under 14s wanted their season to end, but Dungloe couldn't be begrudged their comeback win in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh last week. With the title race effectively decided by the previous week's defeat to Ardara, the meaning was perhaps drained from this game. Nevertheless, Aodh Ruadh did well in the first half, easing into the lead in their accustomed free-scoring fashion. To Dungloe's credit they worked hard to stay with the Ernesiders, and by the break it was Aodh Ruadh 7-1 Dungloe 4-3. In the second half though, Aodh Ruadh lost their way and support runs stopped happening. Dungloe continued to pick off scores while the homesters increasingly struggled to trouble the opposition defence. In the end the visitors ran out handy winners. Cádhla Dolan top scored once again for Aodh Ruadh and can look back on her season with considerable satisfaction. Her partner in crime, Niamh Duffy also took a lovely goal. There were scores for the hard-working Orlaith Gallagher, while Lauren Foy bagged a great goal when shifted to full forward. Emily McNamee was unlucky not to finish with a score after a lot of good work. In the defence Megan Murphy has really established herself at number three and there can't be many better than her in that position in the county. Further out the pitch Andrea Moore, Jessica O'Mahoney and Ciara Larkin all worked hard and deserved more from the game. Perhaps it was fitting that the team's last score of the season was taken by Ellie Brennan, a great worker at training and great prospect for the future. We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. The management would like to thank players for their efforts from we gathered before Christmas last year and also the parents and guardians for all their support through the year.

The under 12 girls were away to Saint Naul's last Wednesday evening for what was a very entertaining tie. The match ended in a draw after a game which ebbed and flowed. Aodh Ruadh had the better of the exchanges in first quarter with Saint Naul's stronger in second quarter. The Ballyshannon girls were ahead by a point after the second water break and pressed ahead only for Saint Naul's to finish strongly and claim a share of the spoils. The girls have no game this week with training on Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm.

Under 10 training continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.15pm at Coláiste Cholmcille.

Monthly club executive meeting
The Aodh Ruadh monthly Club Executive meeting will take place this Thursday, 26th August, at 9pm via Zoom. All club executive members are asked to attend. Items for any other business should be with club secretary Lisa McTernan by 3pm on Wednesday.

Football
On Saturday Aodh Ruadh will be presented with the Division 2 trophy at the home game against Na Dúnaibh. The match throws in at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 5.30pm. We would welcome a big attendance to salute this magnificent achievement. The reserves are also slated to take on Na Dúnaibh at home on Saturday.

The minors lost out by the minimum in a competitive game in Glenswilly in difficult conditions last Friday. Both sides showed initial signs of rustiness following a lengthy lay off of club activity as the county under 17s team progressed to the Ulster final. Glenswilly started the brighter and bagged a three pointer when a typically brilliant save from Aaron Cullen rebounded to an in-rushing Glenswilly attacker. Aodh Ruadh stayed in touch however with pointed efforts from Cian McKenna and Damian Weber before bagging a goal for themselves to leave the scores at 1-4 to 1-2 at the first water break. The key moment of the game came directly after the water break. Despite Aodh Ruadh players adhering to the referees first whistle and clearly making their way back to the field referee Declan Callaghan elected to allow Glenswilly to restart from their own kick out and make their way up their pitch when many of Aodh Ruadh’s defenders and goalkeeper were not in position having had to come from the opposite end of the pitch. Glenswilly profited with a point squeezed over from distance and, with Aodh Ruadh clearly rocked, followed up with a quick-fire goal when the lively Donal Gallagher slalomed through the Aodh Ruadh rearguard to fire to the top corner from 20 metres. This put Glenswilly 2-5 to 1-2 ahead and with the hosts proceeding to pull 14 men behind the ball it left Ballyshannon with an uphill struggle on their hands. Thereafter, though, it was all Aodh Ruadh and pointed efforts from Robbie Murphy and Damian Weber left just a goal between the sides at half time. Aodh Ruadh dominated the ball in the second half, and, up against a formidable Glenswilly defensive unit, slowly reeled the homesters back in and managed to draw level thanks to an excellent effort from Shane Delahunty. However, the Ballyshannon lads just couldn’t find the extra score they needed to get their noses in front despite a host of good opportunities and Glenswilly tagged on a winner late in the game as it finished 2-6 to 1-8. Aodh Ruadh may feel somewhat disappointed coming away with nothing despite keeping the opposition to one score in the final 40 minutes of the game. However, a number of good scoring chances weren’t taken and some kickable frees sailed past the post on one-of-those-days in front of the sticks for the Ernesiders. Damian Weber with five points was best for Aodh Ruadh on an evening when scores were at a premium, as were Ryan Keenaghan and Aaron Cullen who really took the game to Glenswilly and drove on from the back with vigour. Next up for the minors is another away assignment this Friday, Glenfin the opposition.

Under 11 training continues this week on Monday from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and on Thursday in the Coláiste Cholmcille field from 6pm to 7pm.

Our under 9s, short of 17 players were still able to field four teams on Saturday in four very competitive games against Four Masters. The lads are at home this Saturday for their reverse fixture against Ardara. Throw in is at 11.30am. All support appreciated. Training continues as normal on Friday evening at 6.15pm.

Hurling
Our senior hurlers had a rest week last week, but they are set to return to action this Friday in the next round of the championship when they travel to take on the Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair combination.

Our under 17s travelled to the Centre of Excellence in Convoy to face Buncrana in the Donegal League last week. Some fine points by our lads set us up well in the opening minutes, and by half time we had a comfortable lead. The second half saw the gap between the sides widen, and in the end we won by a comfortable margin. There were some fine performances right throughout the team, and all who travelled got meaningful game time. On Wednesday evening we welcome Manorhamilton in the Táin Óg league, with a 7.30pm throw-in.

Our under 15s had a week off last week, and this week return to action in the Donegal League against MacCumhaill's. This should be a real tough encounter, as both these teams clashed in last year’s county final, and had a real ding dong battle in the home fixture earlier in the season. As fate would have it, or the luck of the draw, three days later we will face the same opposition in the semi-final of the under 15 A championship. That last four clash throws in on Sunday at 3.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh and obviously we would like to see a big, vocal Ballyshannon support up to get behind this team who have had an excellent year to date.

Our Táin Óg finals weekend fixture which clashed with confirmation has now provisionally been rescheduled for Saturday, 11th September. More details will follow once this date has been confirmed.

After a busy couple of weeks, the under 13s enjoyed a well-earned break this week, with their final league game having to be rescheduled due to confirmation rehearsals on Thursday. They are now awaiting a slot in the coming weeks when this match can be refixed to.

Our under 9s had a very enjoyable in-house game on Sunday, where they played their first game under full rules. It was great to see their hard work and efforts over the last few months come to fruition. There was a great display of catching, striking, scoring, hooking, blocking, soloing and pick-ups. A big well done to all the players.

Our younger hurlers are coming towards the end of their season, with training running until the first week of September. Any parent who wants their child - boy or girl - to try hurling for the last few weeks with a view to playing next year is more than welcome - just contact John Larkin on 086-1076883.

Ladies
Aodh Ruadh made the long trip to Carndonagh on Sunday morning and were rewarded with a hard-earned victory. The first half was a tense affair, and it took a goal from Tanya McPartland to ensure that the visitors went to the interval with a slim one-point advantage. In the second half a splendid defensive performance with Caitlin McGarrigle, Sara Gallagher and Rionach Sheerin at the heart of the action ensured that the Inishowen girls were restricted to only one further point, while Aodh Ruadh hit 3-3 to clinch the win. At the long whistle it was Aodh Ruadh 4-6 Carndonagh 0-6.

The reserve ladies took on MacCumhaill's on Saturday evening in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. It was the visitors who settled the quickest, racing into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead, however Aodh Ruadh began to get to the pace of the game after the second water break and at the interval it was Aodh Ruadh 0-4 MacCumhaill's 0-6, Síofra Hughes with all the Ballyshannon scores. In the third quarter the Ballybofey girls pushed on again, scoring six points, with only two Roisín Maguire frees in response. The Ernesiders continued to battle right to the end though and were rewarded by a spectacular goal from Ana Keon - a score which now means Anna Rafferty owes her a car. It finished Aodh Ruadh 1-7 to 0-16. Despite coming out on the wrong side of the result the Shamettes showed plenty of character. Shauna Dolan and Rionach Sheerin were magnificent in the defence. Kate Cunningham was immense around the middle third with great support coming from Bronagh Kelly, Ailbhe Treanor and Roisin McGloin. Up front Síofra Hughes was excellent both in terms of finishing and creating chances despite being very closely marked. A notable aspect of the game was two sets of three sisters lining out with Roisín, Bridín and Gráinne Maguire fielding alongside Rionach, Ciarde and Fódhla Sheerin.

This Sunday it is all about championship, with the seniors and reserves both in action as the round robin stages get under way. The seniors entertain Carndonagh in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh in the Intermediate championship, while the reserves make their championship bow away against Letterkenny Gaels. Both games throw in at 11am and we would love to see both teams getting plenty of support.

The minor ladies finally got their league campaign under way last Thursday with a comprehensive victory over Na Dúnaibh. The first half was even enough fare, with goals from Abi Barrett, Katie O'Brien and Orla Keon helping the homesters to a 3-6 to 1-6 half-time lead. In the second half Ballyshannon moved up a gear and scored freely with Abi Barrett, Caoimhe Hughes O'Brien, Orla Keon and Aoibhínn McGarrigle hitting the net with points registered by Erin O'Loughlin, Katie O'Brien, Caitlin McGarrigle, Ciara Gillespie and Annie Keon. It was a great team performance from the homesters. Lauren Foy between the posts saved a penalty. Grainne Maguire was superb in defence. Emer O'Brien and Caoimhe Hughes O'Brien were tireless in the central third, while up front Abi Barrett and Katie O'Brien proved a lethal combination.
The minors followed that up with another convincing win on Monday evening, away in Termon. They picked off scores over the first quarter to head out into a five-point lead, but the home side hit a purple patch on the resumption when they rocked Aodh Ruadh for a 1-1 salvo. The Ballyshannon girls regrouped though and hit another four unanswered points along with a brilliantly taken Katie O'Brien goal to lead by eight at the break. There was little scoring over the course of a third quarter which Termon edged thanks to their second goal of the game. Aodh Ruadh kept pressing right to the end though and they took some lovely points over the final quarter to see out a deserved win. The visitors had a great spread of scorers on the night with Katie O'Brien, Abi Barrett, Ciara Gillespie, Cara O'Loughlin, Lucy McGlynn, Aoibhínn McGarrigle and Niamh Hughes all on the mark. Defensively there was a phenomenal display from Caitlin McGarrigle, with Erin O'Loughlin and Caoimhe Hughes O'Brien very dominant in the central third.
The games keep coming for the minor girls with another long trip on Thursday evening to take on Gaoth Dobhair.

Our under 16s are currently gearing up for their league final against Urris. The decider will take place on Saturday 4th September at 1pm.

The under 12 girls were on the road on Monday evening to take on their more youthful counterparts in Glenfin. They recorded a good victory on the night, with the Ballyshannon girls putting on a great display of football at the home of the reigning senior county champions. Training continues on Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm.

Under 10 training continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.15pm at Coláiste Cholmcille.

Father Tierney Park development
The major works involved in constructing the new playing field at Father Tierney Park are continuing apace and progress is to be seen as each week goes by. This is a good time to see the nature and scale of the project with Prunty Contracts still working on the new platform on which the playing field will be built. This entails major rock-breaking and movement of materials on site. Work is about to commence on breaking ground for the main drains. We have provided a safe viewing platform just past the Aras building which is being accessed regularly by many local people - including players young and old - who are interested in seeing this important project for Aodh Ruadh and the GAA in the northwest move forward.

Football
Aodh Ruadh said sayonara to life in Division 2 with style as they smashed six goals past Downings in their final league match of 2021. Philip Patton sealed his hat-trick with the last kick of the game while Colm Kelly, Shane McGrath and David Dolan also raised green flags. The scoreline probably does a disservice to a Na Dúnaibh side who battled manfully right through the game. After a few scores were exchanged Aodh Ruadh started to quickly pull away with a Patton goal putting five between the sides at the first water break. The pattern continued in the run up to half-time with a goal from David Dolan making it 2-11 to 0-8 on the turn around. Na Dúnaibh enjoyed their best spell of the game in the third quarter, hitting 1-4, however Colm Kelly had also netted and Ballyshannon continued to enjoy a comfortable margin on the visitors. In the final quarter Downings began to flag and goals from Patton (2) and Shane McGrath put the seal on a comprehensive 6-16 to 1-13 victory. The game was a fitting end to the season for a maturing Erneside team who now look every inch a Division 1 outfit, and there's great confidence that their stay in the top flight will be an extended one. Aodh Ruadh were on top all over the pitch. In the defence Colm Kelly and Eddie Lynch were both immaculate, while Nathan Boyle and Jonny Gethins ruled the roost in the middle of the field. Ryan Granaghan has a superb game in the final third as did David Dolan. We have a full match report and pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org. After the game county chairman Mick McGrath presented the Division 2 Father McDyre trophy to the Aodh Ruadh captains Colm Kelly and Shane McGrath and we have pictures from the presentation ceremony up on aodhruadh.org.

The next action for our adult footballers will be their long-awaited return to senior championship. Four Masters will be the opposition for our seniors and reserves on the weekend of Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th September. We wish Barry Ward, Peter Gallagher and both squads all the very best in their preparations.

The minors were on the road again last Friday taking on Glenfin. It proved another fruitless trip though with the homesters taking the spoils on a scoreline of 3-13 to 2-7. The team face yet another trip on Friday, this time to Ballybofey to take on MacCumhaill's at 6.30pm.

The under 15 boys are back in action this week with an away game in Ardara on Wednesday. Throw-in is at 7pm at Pearse Memorial Park.

Under 11 training continues this week on Monday from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and on Thursday in the Coláiste Cholmcille field from 6pm to 7pm.

Last week's under 9 fixture against Ardara was postponed and will be rescheduled for later in September. It is hoped that there will be a game against Glenties this weekend, but this will depend on pitch availability. Further details will be posted on the team WhatsApp group. Training continues as normal on Friday evening at 6.15pm.

Under 7s will conclude their season this Friday after a fun year of training, building skills and great craic. Thanks to all the players for the efforts, to all the coaches for all their hard work, and to the parents and guardians for their support right across the year. The session runs from 6pm to 7pm.

Congratulations to Declan Bonner on being reappointed Donegal senior manager for a two year term.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh's Junior Championship clash with Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair at Páirc na Rosann fell afoul of the weather on Friday evening. A dense sea fog rolled in and reduced visibility to such an extent that both sides agreed the game would have to be abandoned with 15 minutes left to play. At that stage the hosts were leading by a point on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-8 and the result was very much up for grabs. This Friday the team are back in championship action, this time in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh against MacCumhaill's. Throw-in is at 7.30pm and it would be great to see a big support up for this game.

Our under 17s continued their run of wins with a victory over Manorhamilton in the Táin Óg League. Missing a number of players through work commitments, the lads showed great composure in front of goal and took some great scores. It’s great to see this squad getting a run of games again, particularly after Covid related stop-start nature of their campaign so far. This Thursday they play Burt down in the Centre of Excellence in Convoy.

The under 15s had a busy week, playing the same opposition twice in a 72-hour period. On Thursday we travelled to MacCumhaill's in the Donegal League. Our lads were slow to start and conceded 1-5 by the water break. The break allowed us to reset and regain a bit of composure, and rest of the first half saw us start to gain a foothold in the game, but scores were not easy to come by. Our second half performance saw us trying to work ourselves back into the game again, but as the tie wore on the gap between the teams increased and saw the Ballybofey lads pull further away. Not our best day at the office, but at least we didn’t have to wait too long for a shot at redemption.
On Sunday afternoon the sides met again, in the county semi-final. Our lads started much brighter than the previous game and were 1-2 up by the water break and dominant in almost every position. After the water break MacCumhaill's started to come into the game a bit more, and our concession of some soft frees brought them back in to the game. The second half started brightly for us again, but more soft frees allowed MacCumhaill's to level up before taking the lead just before the water break. A goal left us chasing the game into the last 15 minutes, but as we tried to claw our way back MacCumhaill's kept the score board ticking over – and on the day our efforts just weren’t enough. We wish MacCumhaill's the best of luck in the county final. A much-improved performance from Thursday, but disappointing to have lost to opposition we beat only seven weeks previously. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org Training continues for the squad as they prepare for their Táin Óg League finals, and a league semi-final in the coming weeks.

Our under 13s are gearing up for their county semi-final against Saint Eunan's this Thursday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Throw in is at 6.45 for anyone looking to take in the action. Best of luck to all the players and management, as they look to continue their great season so far.

Under 11 hurling will commence on Sunday 12th. Having had very low numbers earlier in the year, we now have had a number of players either join up with our under 13s, our under 9s, or express an interest in taking part. This is a huge positive considering the low numbers at this group earlier in the year. Anyone else interested in joining in is asked to please contact John Larkin on 086-1076883.

Our youngest hurlers, the under 7 and under 9s are coming to the end of their season and will be finishing up this week. We are looking forward to seeing as many of the boys and girls that took part this year as possible for our last training this Sunday! You can check out some of the action from last week's session on aodhruadh.org.

Ladies
For the first time in the club's history Aodh Ruadh fielded two championship teams last Sunday. It was one win and one loss, but both teams gave their absolute all and the club can be very proud of getting 30 players out in championship football for simultaneous fixtures.

The senior game was a dogged battle with a big, strong and physical Carndonagh strengthened by the return of county player, Treasa Jenkins. Aodh Ruadh battled hard over the course of the first half to forge their way into a five point lead, helped by a goal from Cáit Gillespie. Over the course of the second half it was score for score as the Inishowen girls fought hard to get something from the fixture. In the end though Aodh Ruadh had that bit too much and a goal from Terri Gallagher helped ensure they prevailed on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-11. Also on the mark with points for Aodh Ruadh were Donna Martin, Katie O'Brien and Tanya McPartland. It was a magnificent defensive display with Hannah Doherty a prominent contender for player of the match. Lucy McGlynn, Caitlin McGarrigle, Sara Gallagher and Anna Rafferty were excellent, while Orla Keon executed her role to a perfection. As a team, it was a very impressive performance which bodes well for the remainder of the championship campaign. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Meanwhile the reserve ladies were in Letterkenny for their first ever Junior Championship match. Letterkenny Gaels were the opposition, and they were on a high after an under 16 title win the previous week. The Ernesiders got off to a great start and hit the break leading by eight points. The Gaels came out with a strong effort on the resumption and managed to pull themselves back level. However, Aodh Ruadh regrouped and went on the offensive to go six points clear again. Letterkenny weren't to be denied though and pushed on over the remainder of the game to win on a scoreline of 4-22 to 8-8. Amanda Mahon top scored with 2-2, while Meabh Rooney hit the net too and was a great outlet in the attack and Grainne Maguire also took some nice scores. Sarah Daly made some great saves between the post, and defensively Rionach Sheeran was outstanding and Ailbhe Treanor did an outstanding marking job.

With the Ladies All-Ireland finals taking centre stage this week, our adult ladies are enjoying a well-deserved rest. Championship action will resume again on Sunday, September 12th. The seniors will be away to Killybegs in the Intermediate Championship, while the Reserves will be at home against Muff in the Junior Championship. Both games will throw in at 11am.

The minor ladies made it three wins from three last week with a convincing win on road against Gaoth Dobhair. The Ernesiders were in free scoring form with Ciara Gillespie, Cara O'Loughlin, Katie O'Brien, Niamh McGloin and Dairín Sweeny all among the goals. Aoibhínn McGarrigle and Lucy McGlynn also chipped in with points. Ciara Caldwell was Lauren Foy with Tia McFarland deputising in goal. This Thursday the minors have a home tie against Saint Eunan's at 7pm, all support would be much appreciated.

Our under 16s continue to prepare for their league final against Urris. The decider takes place this Saturday at 1pm in Páirc Aoidh. A big showing of Ballyshannon support would be very welcome.

Our under 12 girls have a challenge at home this Wednesday against Bundoran at 6.30pm. Training for the team continues on Saturday from 11am to 12pm.

Work progressing in Father Tierney Park
During the past week the main drains have been laid and work commenced on the diagonal cross-field drains. Progress is steady and the next two weeks should see work on the pitch base well advanced and preparations for laying the new playing surface taking shape. Anyone interested in seeing this project as it moves forward can go the viewing area provided at Father Tierney Park and which is a safe place from which to observe the work. It is important this area is used as there are four track machines and other heavy plant currently on site. Michael Daly is providing regular video reports on the project which are popular and achieving a good reaction. These can be viewed on either the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page or on Daly's Donegal Facebook page where these mini reports have attracted over 1500 views in some instances. Over the next few weeks we are keen to make further progress on our Sponsor a Sod fundraiser and would ask those willing to support this to contact any of our Working Group members who are giving a lot of their personal time to maximise the return from this venture. The end product will be a top class Croke Park size playing field built to the highest standards to meet the modern requirements of competitive Gaelic games in all GAA codes and at both club and inter-county level.

Local leagues and tournaments
Any club unit wishing to run local leagues or tournaments should plan to complete them over the next four to five weeks as there are major maintenance works to be undertaken on both pitches at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh during October. Contact Tom Daly a soon as possible to discuss arrangements.

Community Employment Scheme (CES)
The Department of Social Protection has formally approved the continuation of the CES which the Park / Development Committee manages on the club's behalf. This provides an employment platform for 36 people in a range of voluntary organisations in South Donegal. Having sponsored a number of small-scale Youth Employment Schemes in the late 1970s through to 1981, we first became a sponsor of the then Social Employment Scheme in 1981. Our recent approval marks a consistent 40 year-long involvement as an Employment Scheme Sponsor during which time hundreds of different people have worked to support voluntary activities in sport, social care, education, community business and the arts in Ballyshannon and other south Donegal locations. Thanks to everyone who has played a positive role as a worker, supervisor, administrator or as a Park / Development Committee Officer recruiting, directing, managing and accounting for all that is involved over the years. Particular thanks to the Department of Social Protection Officials with whom we work on a daily basis in relation to the Governance and financing of the CES.

Edward O'Donnell RIP
It is with sadness that the club has learned of the passing of Edward O'Donnell last Friday. Edward was a native of Ardara, lining out for the club, also donning the gold and green for the county as a minor at midfield in the 1965 Ulster Championship. Business brought him to Ballyshannon where he set down roots and made a huge contribution to the local community. Through O'Donnell's Bakery he provided a great deal of employment in the locality. His commitment to the GAA meant he was an obvious man to call upon when Aodh Ruadh set up the first Bord na nÓg committee in the county. A great man to do the quiet, behind the scenes work, his capacious car always had a big load any time Aodh Ruadh youngsters headed off to away games. He sponsored the first under 12 local league in the county in 1981. Auspiciously, it was won that year by John Duffy's team. That initiated a period where football saw an unprecendented flourishing of talent in the town. Among that talent were his own sons, Charlie and Eamon, stylish practitioners of the game in the mould of their father who went on to win every major honour Donegal has to offer at club level. Edward passed after a long battle with illness, which he bore with fortitude and dignity. We extend our sincere condolences to the O'Donnell family and wide circle of friends at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
