The under 14 first team were in action against Letterkenny Gaels last Wednesday in Father Tierney Park. It ended in a victory for the visitors who ran out winners on a 5-3 to 8-12 scoreline. The second team had rather better luck claiming a 6-8 to 3-10 win when they took on Buncrana in the Park last Thursday. There are no games scheduled for this week with training continuing on Thursday from 6pm to 7pm.
The under 12s are training this Tuesday at the earlier time of 5.20pm, with the session wrapping up at 6.30pm. There are minor games on and as a result the pitch is unavailable at the normal time. On Saturday the under 9s played their first games in the local series of blitzes involving teams from Erne Gaels, Glencar Manorhamilton, Grange, Melvin Gaels and Aodh Ruadh. Next up is a trip to Grange for round 2 on Saturday 7th September. Further details will be announced on the teams WhatsApp group.
Our under 8 team had a very busy weekend, with the squad splitting and going to two separate blitzes. The 2017 boys played the North West Regional Blitz series, where we played host to Erne Gaels, Melvin Gaels, Glencar Manorhamilton and Saint Molaise Gaels. Our boys, along with some of our 2018 born lads making their footballing debuts, played very well, with four games in total. Next week they travel to Grange whom are the next hosts.
At the same time, our 2016 boys travelled to Ardara to take part in the Tomás Maguire Memorial Blitz. We had a great day and some excellent performances right across the panel. We had four games in total, facing off against MacCumhaill's, Glenswilly, Saint Michael's and Saint Eunan's. Thanks to Ardara for the invitation and putting on a great day of football for the boys.Ladies
The junior ladies were in on the banks of the Swilly on Sunday morning for what proved an enjoyable tussle with Letterkenny Gaels which ended with honours even. The scoring action was packed into the first half with the Gaels hitting the first two points of the day before Cadhla Dolan converted a free after Ciara Larkin was fouled seven minutes in. Letterkenny registered the next point before Elaine Dorrian was grounded, allowing Cadhla Dolan to convert her second dead ball of the day. The first quarter ended with Dolan getting her first from play to level the game. The sides swapped scores in the 20th minute, Dolan again on the mark for the Shamettes, before the game's only goal arrived. It was a move of individual brilliance from Elaine Dorrian who carved her way through the Letterkenny rearguard before arrowing her shot past the helpless Gaels netminder. The homesters came back with two points, but Amanda Mahon was fouled for another free with Dolan again doing the honours. Letterkenny did get the last two scores of the half though to leave it Aodh Ruadh 1-5 Letterkenny Gael 0-8 as the sides swapped ends. The second half was a fascinating battle, of the sort rarely seen in ladies football, with both defences on top and the attacks struggling to create decent chances. Letterkenny got an early point, but this was cancelled out a minute in by a cool shot from Laoise Foy. With the half winding to a close Eva McNamara looked like she might have clinched it with a sensational long range effort, but Letterkenny managed to work a point in the dying seconds to secure was probably a deserved share of the spoils. Aodhbha O'Donnell was in mind-reader form in the defence, while Fiona McGonigle and Dáirín Sweeny covered every blade of grass over the 60 minutes. In the attack Cadhla Dolan's accuracy was priceless, while Elaine Dorrian showed her enduring quality and Ciara Larkin and Eva McNamara contributed some marvellous runs. The Aodh Ruadh team and scores were as follows: Roisin Maguire, Shauna Dolan, Hannah Doherty, Aodhbha O'Donnell; Laoise Foy (0-1), Annalisa Rabbitte, Megan Murphy; Fiona McGonigle, Dáirín Sweeny; Amanda Mahon, Ciara Larkin, Eva McNamara (0-1); Elaine Dorrian (1-0), Cadhla Dolan (0-5), Caitlyn Gallagher. Subs: Aoife Travers, Ciara Gillespie, Aoife Bromley, Niamh McGloin. This Sunday sees our junior and senior teams both in action in Father Tierney Park in the final round matches of the group stages. The action starts at 10am when the seniors host Termon. That will be followed at 11.30am by the juniors clash with Saint Michael's.
The minor ladies put in a very convincing display in their county quarter-final on Tuesday evening against Carndonagh. Aodh Ruadh started with real verve and goals from Cadhla Dolan (2) and Faye Gillespie followed by an Aoife Travers point gave the homesters the perfect start. A couple of frees and a score for the visitors between the 10th and 12th minutes got them up and running, but Aodh Ruadh took over from there to the half-time whistle, with points from Andrea Moore (2), Ciara Larkin, Faye Gillespie (3), Lauren Foy, and Cadhla Dolan (2). The scoring rate slowed up in the second half, but the Shamettes still kept the score board ticking over on a regular basis. Ciara Larkin smashed home two fine goals before Andrea Moore, Faye Gillespie and Ellen Monaghan raised white flags. It finished Aodh Ruadh 5-13 Carndonagh 1-6 after a great team performance from the Erneside girls. The defence were solid right through the 60 minutes, while further up the pitch Emily McNamee and Aoife Travers were in sensational form in an attack where every player showed huge energy levels. The Aodh Ruadh team was follows: Tara Gallagher; Jessica O'Mahoney, Katie McGowan, Aodhbha O'Donnell; Laoise Foy, Lauren Foy, Megan Murphy; Andrea Moore, Dáirín Sweeny; Caitlyn Gallagher, Ciara Larkin, Emily McNamee; Faye Gillespie, Cadhla Dolan, Aoife Travers. Subs: Cadhla Gillespie, Ellen Monaghan, Hannah McGuinness, Rebecca Downey, Caitlin McGuinness, Emma O'Donnell, Hannah Downey, Sophia Mulligan, Rachel Gillespie. The under 14s made the trip to Milford to take on the hosts in the Division 2 Shield semi-final. Milford got off to the better start leading by two early points before Ballyshannon settled. Leading by 0-8 to 0-4 coming up to half-time Aodh Ruadh got a sucker punch as they conceded a late goal. However the Shamettes replied immediately to go in at half-time 1-8 to 1-4 in front. In a very tough second both sides tried go for goal, however it was Milford who eventually broke through the tight defence bringing it level as the game moved into the dying minutes. Ballyshannon suffered another setback as Jenna Britton received a seemingly soft yellow card and was sent to the sinbin. However the Ballyshannon girls rallied terrifically to grab the last two scores of the game to secure a fantastic 1-10 to 2-5. Keep an eye on the club's social media output for details of the final.
The under 8s have an in-house blitz this Wednesday from 5pm to 6pm. The annual team shot will be taken at this blitz.

Aodh Ruadh's final group stage game ended in a 4-11 to 0-5 defeat in Davy Byrne Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon. It was all too easy for the hosts in the first half as they rattled in two early goals to take control of the game from the off. Aodh Ruadh's managed to interrupt the one way traffic long enough for Nathan Boyle to fist a point and Jack Gallagher to send over a free, but come the half-time whistle Naomh Conaill were leading comfortably, 3-4 to 0-2. Matters didn't improve much in the second half with the scores continuing to flow for the Blues while the Ernesiders had very sporadic attacking success. Darren Drummond did fire over ten minutes in and Jack Gallagher landed two more frees, but there was little doubt about the final result. It ended Naomh Conaill 4-11 Aodh Ruadh 0-5 after a very tough day at the office for the Ballyshannon men. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen; Aidan Sweeny, Conor Patton, Niall Murray; Johnny Gethins, Eamonn McGrath, Michael McKenna; Darren Drummond (0-1), Matt Gillespie; Cian Rooney, David Dolan, Mark McGlynn; Eddie Lynch, Nathan Boyle (0-1), Jack Gallagher (0-3f). Subs: Oisín Rooney for Cian Rooney 43 minutes; Diarmaid McInerney for David Dolan 50 minutes; Ryan Keenaghan for Aidan Sweeny 56 minutes. The reserves didn't field on Sunday, so that brings their season to a conclusion. Thanks to Paul O'Loughlin and his back room team and the squad for all their efforts in 2024.
This Sunday Aodh Ruadh head to MacCumhaill Park to fight for their senior championship survival. Cloich Cheann Fhaola will be the opposition with throw-in at 1pm. Needless to say, it would be good to have a strong support down in Ballybofey to get behind the team in this crucial match.
The minors have had a busy week. Last Tuesday evening they lost out to a fine Four Masters side on a scoreline of 1-9 to 3-10. The hosts couldn't get on top during the encounter, although they did miss a few goal opportunities when there was only three points in it. We have a gallery of pictures from this game up on aodhruadh.org now.
The minors took to the field on Monday evening once again, this time for a clash against Carndonagh played out in horrible conditions. The Indian summer of the weekend was a distant memory as the lashing rain swept in spiteful gusts across Father Tierney Park. The homesters set the early pace with Garreth Brennan and MJ Ward both dividing the posts in the first minute. The Inishowen men got their opener after four minutes, but it was Aodh Ruadh who were setting the early pace with the wind behind them. MJ Ward tagged on points in the fifth and eighth minutes as Ballyshannon looked to be moving smoothly. Carndonagh weren't giving them anything easy though and enjoyed long spells of unopposed possession. They used that possession to fire over two fine scores from play to make it 0-4 to 0-3. Aodh Ruadh still had the sharper cutting edge though and two Barry Campbell frees in the 16th and 19th minutes left the Ernesiders with double scores lead at half-time.
The first quarter of the second half saw only three scores, the first of those coming a minute in when Barry Campbell popped over a lovely shot from play. Carndonagh got an answering point, but that was cancelled out in the 43rd minute by an MJ Ward free. Ward added another free in 49th minute as the light started to rapidly fade away. A Campbell dead ball three minutes later then made it 0-10 to 0-4. With three minutes late Carndonagh got their second score of the half, but that was to be last action of the game as Aodh Ruadh took the spoils on what was a dreadful evening for football. Fionn Hartin and Barry Campbell were excellent in the defence, with Caolan McCauley working hard in midfield. MJ Ward and Callum Dorrian linked well in the attack and helped make the difference at the final whistle.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Corey Sheridan; Johnny Lin, Tommy Clyne, Fionn Hartin; Eoghan Gallagher, Barry Campbell (0-4, 3f), Garreth Brennan (0-1); Caolan McCauley, Garvey Meade; Dara McGloin, Eoin Cassidy, Oran Gillespie; Callum Dorrian, Tyler Connolly, MJ Ward (0-5, 2f). Subs: Ted O'Donnell for Tommy Clyne 27 minutes; Anton Duffy for Oran Gillespie 49 minutes; Aaron McLoone for Dara McGloin 59 minutes; Donagh Kelly, Morgan McNamee, Fionn Doogan. It has been a quiet spell for our under 16s. They are currently training away ahead of their next fixture which will be against Naomh Bríd on Friday, 20th September.
Both under 14 teams are in semi-final action this Wednesday. The A team are at home where they will be entertaining Moville in the Division 2 Shield semi-final, throw-in at 7.15pm for that one. Meanwhile, the B team travel to take on Kilcar in the Division 6 Cup semi-final, with throw-in at Towney down for 6.30pm. Training continues on Monday for the under 14 squad.
It was a huge day for the Aodh Ruadh under 12s on Saturday with all three sides in final action. The Division 1 side were taking on MacCumhaill's in the blue riband decider in the Centre of Excellence in Convoy and the stand was full of enthusiastic Ballyshannon support. Aodh Ruadh got off to a good start with Ryan Neilan breaking the tackles before popping over. MacCumhaill's went hunting goals, but they found Phelim Barron in fine form, with a few classy stops. MacCumhaill's were off the mark shortly after, but points from Sean Travers and Daire Reynolds sent the Ernesiders into a two point lead. Unfortunately, from there to the break the Ballybofey lads took charge, hitting a unanswered 3-3 to take a 3-4 to 0-3 lead to the dressing rooms at half-time.
Aodh Ruadh started the second half strongly with Tom Travers sending over four points from frees, but Ballybofey came back with a fourth goal. Ballyshannon continued to fight though, and goals from Ryan Neilan and Tom Travers kept their side in the game. Neilan did raise a further second half green flag, but MacCumhaill's continued to keep the score board ticking over and come the final whistle, it was they who were county Division 1 champions on a scoreline of MacCumhaill's 5-11 Aodh Ruadh 3-8. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Phelim Barron; Pauric McGrath, Dáire Reynolds-Magee (0-1); Ryan Neilan (2-1), Peadar Finnegan, Michael Bourke; Louis Hassett, Tom Travers (1-5, 4fs); Sean Travers (0-1), Donnacha Conlon, Hugh Mealiffe; Dara McGuinness, Daniel Ward. Subs: Jamie O’Reilly, Dempsey Lynch, Jack McGloin, Patrick McGurn, Ben Menarry, Conor Cullen.
The Division 6 Final saw the Aodh Ruadh second team taking on Naomh Conaill. The Ballyshannon lads had got the better of their Glenties opponents when they met previously during the Southern Regional League stages in Father Tierney Park. That performance was replicated on Saturday with the Ernesiders prevailing on a scoreline of 4-8 to 3-8 to take the silverware.
Aodh Ruadh took on Termon in the Division 8 Final. The shouts for water bottles and sunscreen were never as loud or frequent this season. Captain Ben Menarry lead his players in the warm up and completed his duties with the referee. Aodh Ruadh would play into the carpark end in the first half. Glenn Matthews and Liam Hassett gathered the players together and asked the boys to give their all for their club and themselves and that’s exactly what we got. To say this was a ding dong affair would be an understatement. A hard fought first half saw Aodh Ruadh one point down. The boys redoubled efforts in the second half despite the stifling heat. It looked like Aodh Ruadh had the game won as the 2nd half closed out. But Termon to their credit, crafted late scores for a draw. A big blow for our lads. Extra time looked to be a like it might be a bridge too far. The momentum was with Termon. But they did not reckon on the spirit of the Ballyshannon boys who quickly took charge. The determination and commitment shown was fully appreciated and applauded by the large crowd. James Carr got on the end of some brilliant support play and put this game to bed early in the second half of extra time. To their credit Termon never gave up and Aodh Ruadh were made work hard right to the end, but at the final whistle it was the Ernesiders who were triumphant.
Ben Menarry played a captains part in the Ballyshannon goal making vital saves right through this game. Great kickouts and encouragement for his teammates flowed from Ben all day. At the back Tadhg Cooney and Dempsey Lynch set touch tight marking a new standard. Ahead of the boys were Alex Gallagher, Liam O'Shea and Caolan McNeilly. The intensity of the tackling from these boys had to be seen to be believed. The middle of the field was always going to be a big battle in this game. Freddie Knott made the pitch look small with his athletic runs in both defence and attack. A box to box display that helped Aodh Ruadh build great momentum. Christopher Doogan brought great passing skills and hard running, ensuring Termon were being asked all the right questions. Both Christopher and Freddie gave great support to their forwards and defenders right through the game. Up front Aodh Ruadh had top quality on display. Pauric Waugh saved his best performance for the big day. He ran with great commitment making vital passes and blocks. James Carr built on some great displays in the All-County League stage to deliver a masterclass performance of forward play. Oisín Gallen will surely feel the heat too as James was unerring from frees from all distances and angles. Rossa Gallagher's powerful and committed presence was too much for his markers as he won a lot of dirty ball. Luke Matthews also saved one of his best displays for the big day. Always seeking the ball, even in the most difficult areas he built on a great season to make a big contribution when it counted most. Cillian Gavigan made vital contributions up front heaping pressure on the Termon defence and proving a great help to his team-mates. On such a hot day our bench was always going to need to play their part. Mattej McCadden lifted the intensity of our defending on his introduction in the second half. Always taking the right option, Mattej was another brick in Aodh Ruadh's defensive wall. James McMurray came on to torture the Termon defenders with pace and skill. His brother in arms Joey Mulhearn showed all what real endeavour is like and worked as hard as any player on that pitch. And then there was our two under 10s Michael McGuinness and Oisín O'Neill. These two young players looked right at home with the older group. Our under 9s travelled to Grange on Saturday morning for the latest round of their series of regional blitzes. The boys played five games in total and continue to improve with each outing. Training continues on Tuesday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 7pm to 8pm. This Saturday our under 10s and under 9s will make the journey to Brewster Park in Enniskillen to take on the hosts in what promises to be an exciting day for all. The action is set to get under way at 12pm.
On Saturday, the boys split into two age categories again to take part in the second regional blitz, where this time we visited host club Saint Molaise Gaels in Grange. We had two teams entered at under 7 level, while our 2016 and 2015 born boys played in the under 9 section where we had three teams entered. On the day we played five rounds of games with all players getting plenty of game time. Next week we have no blitz. This Friday will be our last under 8 training session of the year, and we will wrap up our training with a sports day style session.
On Friday evening the under 6 boys wrapped up their season with an internal blitz at Father Tierney Park followed by presentations and refreshments in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. Some 36 boys took part in the blitz which was played in glorious sunshine. Some good skills and teamwork were on display across all games. Many thanks to our referees Andrea Moore, Aodhbha O’Donnell and Laoise Foy. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the boys and to all those who brought along refreshments and to those who set up and cleaned the clubhouse. It’s been a great season for the boys starting in the Mercy Hall at the start of February. Thanks to all the coaches for their commitment throughout the season. We have a huge gallery of pictures from the blitz live now on aodhruadh.org.
Ladies
Aodh Ruadh took on Termon in Father Tierney Park on Sunday morning in their final match of the group stages. This pairing was a reprise of the Division 1 final earlier in the summer. That game had been a one-sided affair, but this contest was much closer fought. The first half saw Ballyshannon playing with the backing of the wind, but Termon made most of the running. Despite that the Shamettes put in a phenomenal defensive performance to keep Termon's scoring rate low. Coming up to half-time it was Aodh Ruadh 0-0 Termon 0-3. However, with half-time beckoning, Geraldine McLaughlin slipped her marker and was grounded in the area and Jimmy White blew for the penalty. The spot kick rattled back off the crossbar, but the kicker was the first person to react and they slipped the ball past Brídín Maguire at the second time of asking.
The second half saw Aodh Ruadh playing into the wind, but now bolstered with greater conviction in their play. They continued to restrict Termon's scoring opportunities, and were rewarded up the other end of the pitch when Terri Gallagher went in hunting after the dropping ball and palmed to the net. Eimear McMahon also landed two frees, and with Termon only managing two points in that after the resumption, it was the homesters who had the better of the second half scoring. It ended Aodh Ruadh 1-2 Termon 1-6. The second half saw a lengthy delay for treatment to an injury for Anna Rafferty. We thank everyone who helped out through a difficult situation as well as the ambulance personnel who provided their assistance. We wish Anna the very best for what looks like being a long road to recovery. The result on the pitch was a significant improvement on the previous meetings between the sides with the defence in particular deserving of much praise. Annalisa Rabbitte was probably Ballyshannon's player of the match, with Sara Gallagher not far behind. Further out the pitch Terri Gallagher and Andrea Moore both did tremendous work on their introduction.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Brídín Maguire; Niamh Barrett, Roisín McGloin, Sara Gallagher; Lauren Foy, Aoibhínn McGarrigle, Katie McGowan; Annalisa Rabbitte, Orla Keon; Anna Rafferty, Cáit Gillespie, Caoimhe Keon; Eimear McMahon (0-2f), Caoimhe Devine, Síofra Hughes. Subs: Terri Gallagher for Caoimhe Devine, Andrea Moore for Síofra Hughes; Emer O'Brien, Niamh Hoey, Tara Gallagher. We have pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org now.The second game in Father Tierney Park on Sunday morning saw an Aodh Ruadh side with the proverbial blend of youth and experience taking on Saint Michael's. Once again Aodh Ruadh had the elements in the first half, but on this occasion they were able to employ them to good effect. Eva McNamara got her side up and running a minute in before Elaine Dorrian popped over followed by Cadhla Dolan a minute later. Dolan then added frees in the fourth and seventh minutes before the Dunfanaghy girls got off the mark with their first point. Caitlyn Gallagher answered that with a magnificent effort from play before adding a fine dead ball conversion. Saint Michael's grabbed their second point of the half in the 21st minute, but again Cadhla Dolan replied with a lovely shot from play. Eva McNamara got the Ernesiders' final score of the half, but the final say went the way of Saint Michael's who landed a free to leave it 0-9 to 0-3 as the teams swapped ends.
The visitors came out with real fire in the second half and banged goals in the 35th and 37th minutes to haul themselves level. They then added a point in the 40th minute to take the lead, but Aodh Ruadh replied in style. In a sweeping move Rebecca McLaughlin tore up the pitch before finding Cadhla Dolan who released Elaine Dorrian and she placed her shot past the keeper. A minute later Ballyshannon had the ball in the back of the net again. This time it was strong running from Caitlyn Gallagher which initiated the chance. She found Emily McNamee who gave Elaine Dorrian a delicate pass and again Dorrian picked her spot. Two minutes later the green flag was raised once more, this time Dorrian was the provider, finding Cadhla Dolan and she made it 3-10. Dolan was full of confidence now and a point from play was followed by another free conversion to make it 3-11 to 2-4 with 50 minutes played. Saint Michael's continued to battle to the very end and did manage to score two frees as well as a well-struck penalty, but Aodh Ruadh had done enough and finished deserved winners. Following on from last week's display against Letterkenny Gaels, it was another hugely gutsy display from the Ballyshannon girls. Rebecca McLaughlin and Aodhbha O'Donnell were outstanding in the heart of a staunch rearguard, while Aoife Travers was super through the middle third. Ballyshannon had a great display from the attack, with Elaine Dorrian both patient and lethal, Cadhla Dolan very accurate and Eva McNamara's direct running causing lots of problems. The result sees Aodh Ruadh book their place in the Junior Championship shield final.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Roisín Maguire; Shauna Dolan, Hannah Doherty, Jessica O'Mahoney; Fiona McGonigle, Rebecca McLaughlin, Aodhbha O'Donnell; Aoife Travers, Laoise Foy; Dearbhla O'Moore, Amanda Mahon, Eva McNamara; Caitlyn Gallagher, Elaine Dorrian, Cadhla Dolan. Subs Emily McNamee for Laoise Foy, Rachel Gillespie for Amanda Mahon, Caitlin McGuinness for Fiona McGonigle; Niamh McGloin for Elaine Dorrian. Check out aodhruadh.org for pictures from the game. Our minors booked their place in the county final in fine fashion against a quality Muff outfit in Father Tierney Park last Tuesday. Aodh Ruadh won the toss and elected to play with the brisk following wind. It was the Naomh Pádraig girls who made the early running though reeling off seven points in the opening ten minutes with only a Ciara Larkin point in reply. The Shamettes had been stitching together some good passing moves though and these started to bear fruit with points from Emily McNamee, Cara Larkin, Caitlyn Gallagher and Faye Gillespie helping to get the hosts back to parity 17 minutes in. Faye Gillespie then found the back of the net to send her side ahead for the first time in the game, it was a lead Aodh Ruadh would not relinquish. Showing their long range point scoring qualities once again, Muff hit the next two points, but Aodh Ruadh replied with white flags from Faye Gillespie, Caitlyn Gallagher and a Megan Murphy special. Then, as the clock ticked to half-time, Ciara Larkin went on a scorching run before laying off to Faye Gillespie who smashed home her second goal of the day. Muff hit the final score of the half, but at the turn around it was Aodh Ruadh who lead 2-10 to 0-10.
Facing into the wind in the second half the Ballyshannon defence put in a magnificent effort, helped by an attack who didn't waste possession and picked off some fantastic scores. Rachel Gillespie got the first point of the new half, with Muff grabbing a quick reply. The next two points went the way of Aodh Ruadh though, with two phenomenal efforts into the wind from Ciara Larkin and Caitlyn Gallagher. Faye Gillespie added a further point as Aodh Ruadh pulled nine points clear. Muff kept battling and notched 1-1 before the final whistle, but this was to be Aodh Ruadh's day as it finished 2-14 to 1-12. It was a superb display by the Ballyshannon girls. Tara Gallagher had a flawless game between the posts. Once again the defensive six operated like a finely oiled machine, while Dáirín Sweeny played a real captain's role in midfield. The quality of score-taking from the forwards was matched every bit by their huge work-rate over the course of the 60 minutes. The substitutes also made big contributions on their introduction, with a particularly explosive cameo from Ellen Monaghan.
The Aodh Ruadh team was as follows: Tara Gallagher; Jessica O'Mahoney, Katie McGowan, Aodhbha O'Donnell; Laoise Foy, Lauren Foy, Megan Murphy; Andrea Moore, Dáirín Sweeny; Caitlyn Gallagher, Ciara Larkin, Emily McNamee; Faye Gillespie, Cadhla Dolan, Aoife Travers. Subs: Ellen Monaghan, Rachel Gillespie, Cadhla Gillespie, Sophia Mulligan, Niamh Duffy, Hannah McGuinness, Caitlin McGuinness, Rebecca Downey, Hannah Downey, Aoife Hughes. We have a gallery of pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org now.The under 14 girls faced off against Ardara in Ballintra on Sunday afternoon for the Division 2 Shield title. The Ardara team was sprinkled with a number of very physically imposing players, but it was Ballyshannon girls who drew first blood, Zara Meade firing over after just 28 seconds. The next two points went Ardara's way, but a Faye Gillespie free squared matters up with 11 minutes on the clock. Ardara edged back in front, but Jenna Britton split the posts with a fine effort as the sides went score for score. Ardara tagged on a free, before hitting the first goal of the game with 20 minutes played. Ballyshannon responded well with Zara Meade sending over a free. Ardara raided for goals in the 22nd and 23rd minutes though to open daylight between the sides. Faye Gillespie did raise a white flag, but Ardara replied to that on the stroke of half-time to make it 3-6 to 0-5 at the interval.
It would have been very easy for the girls to let the heads drop at half-time, as they were now ten points down facing into the wind. However, there was a very positive half-time talk and the players wanted to show what they were really made of in the second half. They duly did just that straight from the throw-in with Jenna Britton winning the ball and setting Niamh McGrath off running. Zara Meade and Faye Gillespie were involved before Tiah Kane took possession and slipped a shot to the net. Three minutes later there was an outstanding point from Niamh McGrath. Ardara got an answering free, but the Shamettes came storming back, a fantastic bit of play from Niamh McGrath sending Faye Gillespie through to slam to the net. That made it 2-6 to 3-7 with 42 minutes gone. Aodh Ruadh continued to enjoy good spells of possession, but clear-cut scoring chances were rare. Ardara were reduced to 14 in the 50th minute, but Aodh Ruadh couldn't really make the numerical advantage count as they pushed up in search of scores. Instead it was Ardara who were able to exploit the spaces and they picked off 1-2 over the closing stages to claim the title. It finished Aodh Ruadh 2-6 Ardara 4-9, a scoreline which doesn't really do justice to how close the game was and how well the Ballyshannon girls did. Olivia Coyle and Kate McGrath were outstanding in the defence. Jenna Britton, Niamh McGrath and Lexi Roper made a lot of good contributions in the middle third. In the attack Faye Gillespie, Zara Meade and Tiah Kane worked hard right through the game. This brings the under 14 season to a close, so we extend our thanks to Terry Hughes, in his mentors and helpers, as well as everyone who lined out for all their hard work this season.

This will be followed quickly by an away game against MacCumhaill's next Tuesday evening. Training will be on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, and Thursday evenings from 6pm to 7pm at the Coláiste Cholmcille pitch. However, the under 12 girls will have an end of season blitz in the dome on Saturday 28th September to officially end what has been a great season for the team.
Our under 6 girls wrapped their season up on Wednesday with some fun games in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Thanks to all the girls for their work this season and to all the coaches for their time and effort. Check out aodhruadh.org where we have a gallery of pictures from the blitz.
Best of luck to Niamh Hughes who makes her international debut this weekend as she lines out for Belgium at tournament in Maastricht.
