Football
Our senior footballers are preparing for their championship opener against Na Dúnaibh. Father Tierney Park will be the venue this Sunday with throw-in at 4pm. The reserve game will be the curtain-raiser at 2.30pm.On the county scene Paul O'Loughlin's under 16s defeated Tyrone 1-12 to 1-10 with Garreth Brennan and Joseph Gibbons playing their parts in the win. Donegal are now gearing up for a final on Saturday, 17th August. Meanwhile the Donegal under 15 development squad are through to the Brian McLernon cup final after beating Armagh 2-5 to 0-4 at the Tír na nÓg grounds in Portadown last Saturday. It was a great defensive effort from Donegal, while up front Aodh Ruadh's MJ Ward was in fine form with four points. Donegal will face Down in the decider on 17th August.
The next competitive action for the minors is on 12th August when they will be taking on Gaeil Fhánada. That a 7.30pm throw-in in Father Tierney Park.
The under 16s travelled to Letterkenny on bank holiday Monday to play the Gaels. Despite a whole hearted performance the lads came out the wrong side of a 2-12 to 3-7 score line. Aodh Ruadh had the best of the first half to take an interval lead of 2-4 to 1-5 with the goals coming from Corey Sheridan and Callum Dorrian. However the home side started the second half best to overturn the lead in the first 10 minutes. Aodh Ruadh stayed close with only a point between the sides for most of the remainder of the game. A late Gaels goals was almost immediately cancelled out when Dáithí Sheerin poked home, but time was up and the Gaels prevailed by two points. That leaves us in the championship shield semi-final against Kilcar. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Anthony Duffy; Aaron McLoone, Dáithí Sheerin (1-0), Fionn Hartin; Oisín McCadden, Gareth Brennan, Eoghan Gallagher; Antoin Duffy, Seán O'Neill; Joseph Gibbions (0-4, 2f), Max Roper, Eoghan McCadden; Callum Dorrian (1-2), Corey Sheridan (1-0), Eoghan Gallagher (0-1). Subs: Finn Doogan for Max Roper, Dara Vaughan for Eoghan McCadden, Antoin O'Loughlin for Oisín McCadden, Toirleach Hughes for Aaron McLoone.
With Team One's clash with Naomh Ultan falling by the wayside, the only under 14 team in action last week were Team Two. They travelled down to Lifford last Wednesday and made the trip worth while with a well-earned 5-6 to 7-13 win over the Naomh Pádraig lads. Under 14 training continues on Thursday evening at 6pm in anticipation of a huge day of football this Saturday when the club will be staging the PJ Roper tournament.
All Aodh Ruadh's under 12 teams got off to winning starts in their all-county competitions. Our Team Two won with comfort at home to Gleann tSúillí's second team. Aodh Ruadh's Team Three had a much closer tussle at home to Naomh Bríd's second team winning by a single point. All our remaining games are away from home this week with our Team One playing Saint Michael's on Friday evening. Teams Two and Three have no games until Friday, 16th August. Training continues for all team members on Tuesday at 6pm.
Under 10 training continues as normal on Tuesday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 7pm to 8pm. There will be no training on Saturday as the pitch will be in use for the PJ Roper under 14 tournament.
Training continues on Fridays at 7pm. Last Friday saw the start of our summer league. We have four teams, with each team playing as one of our all-Ireland semi finalists. Friday saw Donegal play Armagh, and Galway play Kerry, the boys are already looking forward to their next game this Friday.
Ladies
The adult ladies teams are in full preparation mode for their respective championships campaigns which commence this Sunday. The seniors are taking on Saint Eunan's, while the juniors will be facing Red Hugh's. Both fixtures are away ties with 10.30am throw ins.The minors had to share the spoils with Saint Naul's in Mountcharles last Tuesday after a typically hard fought contest. The hosts had the benefit of the slope in the first half and built up a 1-3 lead before Niamh Duffy found the back of the net to get her side off the mark in the 15th minute. Naul's hit a point in reply, but the Shamettes finished the half well, with Cadhla Dolan landing a free and then raising a green flag just before the break. That left the sides deadlocked at 1-4 to 2-1 at the turnaround.
The scores didn't exactly flow in the second half either Aodh Ruadh had the better of the opening exchanges with Ciara Larkin popping over an early score from play which she followed with a fantastic goal two minutes later. 42 minutes in Saint Naul's lost a player following a very heavy challenge on the tireless Ellen Monaghan. The numerical differential seemed to favour the homesters though, and they really pushed on, hitting 2-2 to a solitary point from the visitors to move three points clear, 3-6 to 3-3. Another point when Saint Naul's were restored to the full compliment now meant Ballyshannon needed two scores to get something from the game. Aodh Ruadh had to dig deep with time running out, but the girls really showed their character in those closing stages. First Cadhla Dolan landed a point and then Andrea Moore spied her opportunity and flighted a shot to the net to make it all square at 3-7 to 4-4. A word of praise for referee Kenneth Byrne who was consistent and communicated well through-out. Best for Aodh Ruadh was Andrea Moore who never stopped all game, carrying ball and putting her body on the line. Aodhbha O'Donnell did well in a defence which had plenty to contend with. In the attack Cadhla Dolan and Ciara Larkin made their chances count. This Tuesday the team return to home comforts as they entertain Glenswilly in Father Tierney Park at 7pm.On Sunday a restricted panel of 12 of our under 12 girls played an exhibition game at Croke Park against Clonard of Wexford at half-time of Leitrim v Tyrone intermediate ladies all-Ireland final. The girls had great support from their under 12 team-mates, families, coaches and the under 14 girls. The girls were right at home in Croke Park and put on an excellent display kicking seven points during the eight minute game. The girls played brilliantly, displaying strong team-work skills and good defence, passing and shooting skills. Well done to all the girls on a great team performance. Well done to Emily Gallagher (0-3) Kayla McDermott (0-2) Katie McLoughlin and Halle McGowan who all have the honour of saying they have scored a point in Croke Park! The full panel who made the trip to Headquarters were Emily Ryan, Ava McCaffrey, Saoirse O'Donnell, Mia Duffy, Nicole McGrath, Muireann Gallagher, Ava Garvey, Tiah Kane, Halle McGowan, Kayla McDermott, Emily Gallagher, Katie McLoughlin. The game was the icing on the cake of an amazing, if long day. Joined by a large group of their under 12 team-mates, the under 14 girls, and their coaches, families and friends the girls enjoyed watching three brilliant finals on the day. Thanks to everyone who came along to make it such an enjoyable day. Thanks to Noel McGrath who sponsored the bus for under 12s, and Terry Hughes who sponsored a bus for the under 14s. Training continues on Tuesday evening at 6pm and next up for the girls then is an away game against Enniskillen Gaels on Thursday evening at 6pm.
Hurling
The senior hurlers put in a super performance against Buncrana in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, but it was the Inishowen men who took the spoils. Aodh Ruadh had the lead at half time, but goals did the damage as Buncrana ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-15 to 2-10. We have a gallery of pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org.Our minors had a somewhat disappointing game away to Burt last Thursday. Aodh Ruadh completely dominated in the first half and were ahead by eight points at the half time break. However, it was definitely a game of two very different halves and Ballyshannon allowed Burt back in to the game and were lucky to sneak a draw in the end. Next up will be a clash with Sean MacCumhaill's, which is likely to be scheduled for this Thursday in Father Tierney Park.
The under 16 all county league has been put on hold until September. Training will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays as normal.
Training will continue for the under 12s as they prepare for their next game on Thursday, August 15th, against Burt.
Under 10 and under 8 hurling continues on Sundays at 11.45am.

After a tough league it was great to see our seniors return to winning ways in their championship opener on Sunday. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen; Ryan Keenaghan, Conor Patton, Eddie Lynch; Johnny Gethins, Eamonn McGrath, Colm McGloin (0-1); Darren Drummond (0-1), Matt Gillespie (0-1); Niall Murray, Philip Patton (0-1), Senan Rooney (0-1); Jack Gallagher (0-7), Nathan Boyle, Cian Rooney. Next up is a trip to Dungloe on Saturday with the reserve game throwing in at 5.30pm followed by the seniors at 7pm.
Aodh Ruadh's minors were due to play round three of the all-county championship on Monday, however Fanad were unable to travel. Next up is Four Masters away in two weeks time in round 4. Training continues for the team on Wednesday and Friday this week. The Minor team would like to thank Patrick, Kellie and all at CJ Farrell for sponsorship of the new jerseys. Its much appreciated.
The PJ Roper tournament was revived last Saturday at under 14 level. There was a great calibre of clubs attending and all participants commented on how well th e event was. Huge congratulations to everyone who made it such a success. We have a massive gallery of pictures from the tournament live on aodhruadh.org now.
The under 12 Division One team, team one, had a great one point win in Dunfanaghy last Friday evening. They showed great resilience and battling qualities to come back from five points down and time almost up. An extremely strong wind was blowing down the pitch, so much so that St Michaels keeper scored a goal from his kick out with two huge bounces of the ball. Yes, this is under 12 football! Aodh Ruadh scored two late goals against this wind and cleared what looked like a certain goal off our line in the most exciting last two minutes, to win by one point. Team 1 now travel to Moville on Friday, 23rd August, while Teams 2 and 3 are both in action this Friday in Gaoth Dobhair and Falcarragh simultaneously. Training for the squad continues as usual Tuesday at 6pm.
Under 10 training continues on Tuesday evening from 7pm to 8pm at Coláiste Cholmcille and on Saturday morning from 10am to 11am in Munday's Field.
Last Friday evening we had the second round of our under 8 internal league, with Donegal taking on Kerry, and Armagh playing Galway. We had two hotly contested games, with some fine work by all four teams. Training continues on Fridays at 7pm, and we have our final round of group games with Galway taking on Donegal and Kerry playing Armagh.
Ladies
There were losses for our senior and junior ladies on Sunday morning. The senior ladies lost by two goals to Saint Eunan's, while the juniors lost out after a tight battle with Red Hugh's. Both teams are at home this Sunday. The juniors take on MacCumhaill's at 10am in Father Tierney Park, followed by the senior clash with Naomh Conaill at 11.30am.The minors had their first loss of the season when they came out second best against Glenswilly last Tuesday. Aodh Ruadh had the breeze in the first half, but probably didn't make enough use of it and paid the price at the end. Aoife Travers got her side up and running 50 seconds in with a fine point, but Glenswilly replied two minutes later. Aodh Ruadh raised the game's first green flag with a lovely pass from Niamh Duffy found Cadhla Dolan and she netted. Glenswilly answered with a free, but Cadhla Gillespie set up Cadhla Dolan for another Ballyshannon point. Emma O'Donnell was then fouled for a free which Dolan converted well. Aodh Ruadh tagged on another point before an intelligent pass from Sophia Mulligan released Ciara Larkin and she made no mistake to send Aodh Ruadh 2-4 to 0-2 clear with 16 minutes played. From there to the break the hosts took their foot off the pedal and Glenswilly were allowed to hit an unanswered 1-3 and go in trailing by just two points at half-time. Glenswilly got the first point on the resumption, but two superb effort from Andrea Moore put a goal between the sides again. Glenswilly had the ball for long stretches of the second half though and were able to chalk up 1-5 with just a Cadhla Dolan free in reply. Aodh Ruadh did battle to the end and points from Ciara Larkin and Cadhla Dolan cut the gap down to two points, but the clock ran out. Tara Gallagher was solid between the posts, while Sophia Mulligan, Katie McGowan and Aobhbha O'Donnell gave it their all in the back line. Further out the pitch Andrea Moore, Cadhla Gillespie, Emily McNamee and Aoife Travers fought hard. We have a gallery of images from the game on aodhruadh.org now. The team play their penultimate game of the round robin stages this Tuesday when they make the trip to Letterkenny Gaels for a 7.30pm throw-in.
Well done to Jenna Britton, Leia Roper and Emer McGarrigle, proud Aodh Ruadh girls who were at Garvaghey on Saturday to take part in the under 13 Player Development programme blitz.

Football
After the first two rounds, it's won one, lost one for Aodh Ruadh. They got to within a point of Dungloe on Saturday afternoon, but they could never quite get on top of the homesters. The writing was on the wall early on with Dungloe striding out into a six point to no score lead after just 15 minutes. The Ernesiders finally got off the mark with a Johnny Gethins goal after fully 20 minutes played. From there to the break Ballyshannon had the better of things and points from Jack Gallagher (2), Cian Rooney and Matt Gillespie left them trailing by just a point, 0-8 to 1-4. That good work was rapidly undone at the start of the second half though with Dungloe finding the net in the first minute after Connie Doherty's throw-in. From there to the finish the sides pretty much went score for score, Dungloe always able to keep Aodh Ruadh at arm's length. The visitors did have further points from Nathan Boyle and Jack Gallagher (3), but in the end it wasn't enough as it finished Dungloe 1-12 Aodh Ruadh 1-7. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Aaron Cullen; Michael McKenna, Conor Patton, Kyle Murray; Johnny Gethins (1-0), Eddie Lynch, Colm McGloin; Matt Gillespie (0-1), Cian Dolan; Niall Murray, Darren Drummond, Senan Rooney; Jack Gallagher (0-5, 4f), Nathan Boyle (0-1), Cian Rooney (0-1). Subs: David Dolan for Cian Rooney 15 minutes, Diarmaid McInerney for Niall Murray 49 minutes, Darragh Flood Dolan for Colm McGloin 51 minutes, Gary Carty for Kyle Murray 62 minutes. The reserves were second best against Dungloe on Sunday. The hosts made the early running and were 1-4 to 0-3 points ahead with five minutes left in the first half. Any hopes Aodh Ruadh might have had of keeping it tight to the break were shattered with Dungloe struck for 1-1 to leave eight points between the sides at the break. The Ernesiders did work hard to stay in contention, but the Dungloe men were getting their chances that bit easier and were able to build up a strong lead. By the final whistle the score board read Dungloe 3-13 Aodh Ruadh 0-8.
The draw for the third round of senior championship games took place on Sunday evening. This saw Aodh Ruadh pulled out against Ardara, with the Ernesiders drawn at home. The fixtures will take place on Sunday with the reserves getting the action going at 2.30pm and the seniors following at 4pm.

Next up for our minors is Four Masters in Tir Chonaill Park in round 4 of the all-county league on Monday 26th August. Training continues for the team on Wednesday and Friday this week.
A depleted under 16 team travelled to Towney to take on Kilcar on Monday night in the shield semi-final. Joint captains Corey Sheridan and Garreth Brennan were amongst those missing, and we had to play against a very strong breeze in the first half into the bargain. Aodh Ruadh opened the score after 2 minutes, but Kilcar answered that with a goal, and went on to make good use of the wind. We had a player sent off after 25 minutes for two yellows, the first yellow looking particularly harsh. With the wind now behind them Aodh Ruadh got more scores, but the damage had been done in the first half, and we were defeated on a score line of 5-11 to 1-8. The next game for the under 16s is this Friday, a Southern Board match away to Killybegs.
Last week saw the under 14 first team lose their away game against MacCumhaill's in Ballybofey. Meanwhile the second team also lost out at home against Robert Emmet's. Training continues for the squad as usual on Monday and Thursday. The next games scheduled are on Wednesday, 28th August, with the first team due to entertain Letterkenny Gaels in Father Tierney Park, while the second team will also enjoy home comforts, Buncrana the opposition. The first team game throws in at 6.30pm with the second team game going off at 7.45pm.
Under 10 training continues on Tuesday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 7pm to 8pm and on Saturday morning from 10am to 11am in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.
Friday evening we had the final round of our under 8 internal league, with Donegal taking on Galway, and Armagh playing Kerry. Again, we had two hotly contested games, with some fine work by all four teams. This Saturday at 4pm we will have our semi-finals and finals in Father Tierney Park, with table-toppers Kerry taking on Donegal, and Armagh playing Galway. Followed by both our finals.
Ladies
Aodh Ruadh claimed their first senior championship win in over two decades on Sunday as they got the better of Naomh Conaill in Father Tierney Park. The hosts won the toss and played with the wind in the first half and Eimear McMahon opened the scoring from a free with less than a minute gone. Two minutes later she added another dead ball as Aodh Ruadh made a steady start. Scores came slower after that with the Glenties net minder making a great stop eight minutes in when one on one with Cáit Gillespie. The homesters did manage to extend their lead a minute later though, Eimear McMahon with another superb placed ball effort from her wrong side. Orla Keon then struck her side's first point from play after 11 minutes, adding a second two minutes later after good link up play. The next score came with ten minutes of the half left and it was worth the wait, Eimear McMahon floating over from the 45 metre line, a glorious effort. Gillian Dufficy followed that up with another lovely score after being well teed up by Sara Gallagher. McMahon tapped over another free after 26 minutes, and she followed that with a delicious pass into Caoimhe Devine who pivoted and popped over. That left it 0-9 to 0-0 at the turnaround.
Aodh Ruadh got the perfect start to the second half with another McMahon free with less than a minute on the clock. Two minutes later Naomh Conaill finally got off the mark with a score from play. Aodh Ruadh had a penalty in the 35th minute when Orla Keon was fouled in the area, but Eimear McMahon's shot came back off the cross bar. Glenties had their first score from dead ball a minute later before raising the first green flag of the game in the 38th minute. The homesters responded well though, Caoimhe Keon being dragged on her way through and McMahon flighting over the free. Naomh Conaill came back with a free of their own to make it Aodh Ruadh 0-11 Naomh Conaill 1-3 moving into the final quarter. An intelligent fist over from Cáit Gillespie helped keep Aodh Ruadh in the ascendancy and another McMahon free then put seven points between them. Naomh Conaill grabbed a free with ten minute left. The Blues got a lifeline two minutes later with a goal following a turnover in the home defence, but again Ballyshannon responded in great fashion with a great move from their own kick out finished by Cait Gillespie. A free from Naomh Conaill left a goal between the sides with three minutes remaining. There was an extended stoppage in play then following a heavy injury to Gillian Dufficy. On the resumption Cait Gillespie won another free which was tapped over by McMahon to edge her side two scores clear. The game was put to bed six minutes after normal time when Caoimhe Keon put on the afterburners and strode through the Naomh Conaill defence, side-stepped the keeper and placed to the back of the net. It was a phenomenal performance from the Aodh Ruadh girls against a strong Glenties side. The whole defence were outstanding with Sara Gallagher and Anna Rafferty in stellar form. Caoimhe and Orla Keon put in an incredible shift, while up front all six attackers linked well with Eimear McMahon's place-kicking and the link up play of Gillian Dufficy and Andrea Moore particularly effective. Thanks to Naomh Conaill for the great sportsmanship they showed throughout, but particularly during and after the injury to Gillian Dufficy, who is now thankfully on the mend. We all wish Gillian the best for a full recovery.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Bridín Maguire; Síofra Hughes, Roisin McGloin, Katie McGowan; Sara Gallagher, Anna Rafferty, Lauren Foy; Caoimhe Keon (1-0), Orla Keon (0-2); Eimear McMahon (0-9f), Cait Gillespie (0-2), Andrea Moore; Gillian Dufficy (0-1), Caoimhe Devine (0-1), Niamh Hoey. Sub C Gillespie for G Dufficy (inj). Check out aodhruadh.org for a great gallery from the game.Sunday's junior championship game in Father Tierney park between Aodh Ruadh and MacCumhaill's went the way of the Ballybofey girls, although the final scoreline didn't do justice to a superb effort by the Ernesiders. Aodh Ruadh started with the benefit of a strong following wind and Eva McNamara got her side off to a great start with two early points from play. Roisin Maguire then stretched that with a fine score from range in the 8th minute. MacCumhaill's landed their first a minute later to make it 0-3 to 0-1. Aoife Bromley restored the lead with a lofted point after 12 minutes. Two minutes later Aodh Ruadh grabbed the game's first goal. An Eva McNamara effort for a point came back off the post and Roisin Maguire was first to react, collecting and quickly releasing to Elaine Dorrian who rifled low to the net. Eva McNamara added her third point of the game. MacCumhaill's got a quick reply, but a fabulous point from Roisin Maguire saw Aodh Ruadh continue to keep the score board ticking. Two frees in succession for MacCumhaill's made it 1-6 to 0-4 after 26 minutes. Elaine Dorrian did really well to steal a kick out and then drive over. The last scores of the half were two further MacCumhaill's frees, with Eva McNamara slotting over another lovely shot from play to leave it Aodh Ruadh 1-8 MacCumhaill's 0-6 as the sides headed for the changing rooms.
MacCumhaill's made quick use of the breeze, sending over the first score of the new half three minutes in. That was followed by another seven unanswered white flags in succession over the next 10 minutes. Elaine Dorrian got Aodh Ruadh's first score of the half after 15 minutes, knocking over a free after being fouled on her way through on goal. MacCumhaill's replied with an goal dropped into the net, following that with another point shortly after. Another four points ensued to stretch the visitors further into the lead as it finished Aodh Ruadh 1-9 MacCumhaill's 1-19. Bridín Maguire had a good return to goal-keeping duties, while Megan Murphy and Rebecca McLaughlin were outstanding in the defence. Further up the pitch, Laoise Foy, Eva McNamara and Elaine Dorrian all made good contributions.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Bridín Maguire; Aodhbha O'Donnell, Megan Murphy, Shauna Dolan; Emily McNamee, Rebecca McLaughlin, Cadhla Gillespie; Laoise Foy, Fiona McGonigle; Eva McNamara (0-4), Amanda Mahon, Aoife Bromley (0-1), Elaine Dorrian (1-2), Roisin Maguire (0-2), Caitlyn Gallagher. We have a gallery of images from the game live on aodhruadh.org now.Next week our junior ladies have a break, but the senior ladies will be in action away against Moville. Throw in down in Inishowen is 10.30am.
The minor ladies returned to winning ways last Tuesday with a good win over Letterkenny Gaels. Goals from Andrea Moore, Faye Gillespie and Emily McNamee helped the Shamettes to a 3-11 to 1-3 victory. Jessica O'Mahoney had a very strong game in the defence, while further up the pitch Cadhla Gillespie and Caitlin McGuinness did a lot of good work off the ball and both landed points from play. Meanwhile Caitlyn Gallagher was very accurate, hitting three points, with Andrea Moore and Faye Gillespie also raising white flags over the course of the game. Our minor ladies play the last round of league games this Tuesday. As things stand, every team in the top four could finish first, second, third or fourth depending on how results go so it's set to cracking entertainment, for the neutrals at least! Aodh Ruadh will be making the short trip to over Finner hill to take on Bundoran on decision day, with throw in at 7pm and we'd definitely love to have a big Ballyshannon support there for this one.
Hurling
It was a tale of two Burts last week for our young hurlers. The minors travelled to Burt for the second time in a fortnight, this time to meet in the quarter-finals of the Championship. Aodh Ruadh started well with a somewhat depleted team. The under 16s stepped up and embraced the challenge, but by half-time, after a lucky goal and a dubious penalty, Burt were leading by 3-3 to 1-2. In the second half, Aodh Ruadh, now down to 13 men continued to struggle and the home side surged ahead with another goal. Not for the first time this season, the younger boys stepped up and, building on some fine defending, they impressively pulled the game back to within a three point deficit. It wasn't to be, however, as Burt managed a last minute goal and took the win with six points to spare. There is one last game for this group as they await details of the date for their B League final against Saint Eunan's.The under 12s welcomed Burt to Father Tierney Park on Thursday for their final group game in the all-county league. In what was a hotly contested game, Aodh Ruadh were delighted to take the win and become the only team to defeat this strong Burt side so far this season. There were some magnificent scores for both teams in the first half, with Aodh Ruadh going in at the break four points down. The start of the second half saw Burt increase their lead, but as the half progressed the Ernesiders clawed their way back into contention, before a late goal put Ballyshannon ahead going into the closing minutes of the game. There were some great performances right across the team on the evening, but a special word of mention has to go to our young whistler James Gallagher who performed very creditably. Well done to all the team on a great match and a brilliant battle and to proud mentors, Patrick and Rob.
Training continues as normal for our under 10s with training on Thursday evening and Sunday morning. The under 10s have an all-county blitz this Friday evening in Convoy. Players are asked to be there for 6.30pm, with games throwing in at 7pm.
Our under 8s have no games this week, but training continues at 11.45am on Sunday.

The Park / Development Committee are entering into an exceptionally busy period with visiting USA tour groups over the next 12 weeks. There are up to five tours each week for much of this period. This is exceptionally demanding on the time of the club volunteers who do this development fund-raising work for Aodh Ruadh and it is important that the lay-out and arrangements for the tours are kept intact at all times. This year's programme of tours started in March and runs until November.First annual hurling summer camp
Last week saw the roll out of the inaugural hurling summer camp, kindly sponsored by VKG Limited and Rensport Finishes, with over 50 children taking part. John Larkin's baby, this proved to be a massive success with all the participants having a thoroughly enjoyable time and learning lots of new skills along the way. John and his many helpers had a packed schedule of events. On Thursday we welcomed Jamie Brennan back to Ballyshannon, where he spoke to each group about his own hurling career, togging out for Aodh Ruadh, and how he was able to combine playing underage hurling and football for club, county and province. Friday saw the visit of the Nicky Rackard Cup, and senior Donegal hurler Declan Coulter. Declan spoke to the boys about his own career, and led an under 12 session as well as a joint under 8 and under 10 session. The juvenile hurling committee would like to extend our congratulations and thanks first and foremost to John Larkin for arranging the camp and also to all who helped out during the three days including Martin Larkin, Stephen Sheerin, Mark Sheerin, Daithi Breen, Paul Sheridan, Senan Rooney, Hannah and Ellen McGarrigle, Johnny Lin, Daithi Sheerin, Garreth Brennan, Joseph Gibbions, Corey Sheridan, Antoin O'Loughlin and Antoin Duffy. Football
There is no sugar-coating what was a gutting defeat on Sunday to Ardara in front of a large championship crowd in Father Tierney Park which braved the horrible weather. Goals cost Aodh Ruadh dearly. To begin with, they kept a struggling Ardara side in the match, later they helped the visitors pull away as Ballyshannon desperately attempted to retrieve something from the game.
The seniors were favoured with a strong following wind in the first half, but struggled to make it count. It started very promisingly with a beautiful ball from Michael McKenna in well fielded by Jack Gallagher who hoisted over the mark. Five minutes in Gallagher extended the lead following a bad foul on Darren Drummond. Gallagher had his third point of the day 11 minutes in, floating over a well-struck 45. Ardara finally got off the mark two minutes later, but Cian Rooney quickly responded with Ballyshannon's first score from play of the day. Two minutes later though the homesters gave award a horror score. They had a free kick on their own 65 which was kicked backwards straight to KJ Molloy and the unmarked Ardara man raced up the pitch and kicked over the head of the back-pedalling Karl O'Brien into an empty net. Jack Gallagher did hit back with a free, but it was an awful score to concede. Three minutes from the break Gallagher added a further free, but Ardara had their tails up and notched another point. The last say of the half fittingly went the way of Jack Gallagher who split the posts with a tough effort from range to make it Aodh Ruadh 0-7 Ardara 1-2 as the sides headed for the dressing rooms.
Aodh Ruadh faced the wind now and needed to take the energy from the proceedings for a few minutes, but seconds in Karl O'Brien and Johnny Gethins both went for a ball which somehow ended up in the net. A Cian Rooney free after 38 minutes did level it, but Aodh Ruadh continued to live dangerously. Their cause wasn't helped with a mystery penalty was awarded to Ardara, but justice was done on this occasion with Karl O'Brien making a magnificent double save and sending the homesters up the pitch where Jack Gallagher was able to swing over from play. That left Aodh Ruadh leading heading into the final quarter, but another poor goal in the 49th minute put Ardara back into the lead and a point two minutes gave them some breathing space. Ardara hit the next two points before finding the net with their fourth goal, another poor concession as the spaces opened in Aodh Ruadh's defence. Ardara flooded back and two frees from Diarmaid McInerney were as much as the Ernesiders could muster in the closing stages as it finished 4-5 to 0-11.
It was a nightmare championship performance from an Aodh Ruadh perspective, but Conor Patton gave his absolute all, while Jack Gallagher did similar up the other end of the pitch and his currently third highest scorer in the senior championship. Nathan Boyle tried hard and Shane Delahunty also did really well on his introduction also. We have a gallery of pictures from the game live now on aodhruadh.org.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Karl O'Brien; Michael McKenna, Conor Patton, Johnny Gethins; Niall Murray, Eddie Lynch; Colm McGloin; Matt Gillespie, Darren Drummond; Cian Rooney (0-2, 1f), Philip Patton, Senan Rooney; Jack Gallagher (0-6, 3f, 1m, 1 45), David Dolan, Nathan Boyle. Subs: Shane Delahunty for Niall Murray 17 minutes; Diarmaid McInerney (0-2f) for Philip Patton 29 minutes; Darragh Flood Dolan for Michael McKenna 40 minutes; Cian Dolan for David Dolan 54 minutes. The reserves never really got going in their tussle with Ardara. Aodh Ruadh faced the elements in the first half and true to form scores were hard come by. Ardara had a point after 30 seconds, but Ballyshannon came back with a good effort from Oisín Rooney. A couple of minutes later Jake Foley edged his side in front for the first time in the game, but Ardara were back on terms six minutes in. The visitors grabbed the next point with Shane Gillespie levelling it up again in the 11th minute. However it was one way traffic on the score board from there to the break with the Pearse Park men landing an unanswered 1-8 over the rest of the half.
The homesters did get a good start to the second half with a Cathal Kelly free rapidly followed by a lofted shot from Oisín Rooney. That was followed by a good point from Cian McKenna who did well to get his shot off despite being pulled. All that work was undone though when Ardara got the benefit of a questionable call and managed to get the ball in the net. The visitors followed that up with 1-3 over the remainder of the third quarter before Damian Weber fired over his first point of the day. Ardara answered that, but Shane Gillespie sent over a minute later to cancel it out. Moving into the last ten minutes Ardara pointed to make it 3-16 to 0-8. The game petered out in the closing minutes with the last two scores of the game going the way of Damian Weber, but in truth this one was over from well out.
Best for the Ernesiders were Michael Ward in an over-worked defence, with Ryan O'Brien doing really well on his introduction. Up front Oisín Rooney and Cathal Kelly battled hard, while Damian Weber made a big difference when he came in at half-time. We have a gallery of shots from the game live on aodhruadh.org.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Kerry Ryan, Ciaran Slevin, Michael Ward, Shane McGloin; James Monaghan, Callum O'Halloran, Cian McKenna (0-1); Diarmuid Flood Dolan, Conor Foy; Jake Foley (0-1), Shane Gillespie (0-2), James Gallagher; Martin Larkin, Oisín Rooney (0-2), Cathal Kelly (0-1f). Subs: Ryan O'Brien for Ciaran Slevin 7 minutes; Damian Weber (0-3) for Martin Larkin; Diarmaid Slevin for James Monaghan; Ryan Daly for James Gallagher HT; Rory Gethins for Oisín Rooney 43 minutes.A number of fixtures were deferred because of Sunday awful weather, and as a result the fourth round draw for the championship was postponed.
Our minors meeting with Four Masters fell foul of the weather and has been rescheduled to Tuesday 3rd September. Training continues for the team on Wednesday and Friday this week.
Our under 16 boys went to Killybegs on Friday evening for their third match in the Southern Regional Board league. The Ballyshannon lads dominated from the throw-in, and ran out strong winners.
The under 14s will be entertaining Letterkenny Gaels this Wednesday at 6pm. Training continues as usual on Thursday evening.
There was a great win last Friday evening in Moville for our under 12s against a strong home outfit. The result means Aodh Ruadh finished top of our side of the Division 1 table, so we will play MacCumhaill's in the county final, who also won all three of their group games. This decider will be played on Saturday 7th or Sunday 8th September. All under 12 teams will play their last game of the season at the all-county finals days in Convoy that weekend. Teams 2 and 3 are away in Buncrana and Milford this Friday and these results will determine their opposition for the finals weekend. Training continues on Tuesday evening for the whole squad at 6pm.
Under 10 training continues on Tuesday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 7pm to 8pm. Starting on Saturday 31st August, our under 9s (2015 and 2016) and under 7s will be taking part in a series of blitzes involving Aodh Ruadh, Bundoran, Erne Gaels, Grange, Melvin Gaels and Glencar Manorhamilton. Each week, a different club will host the blitz with Ballyshannon being the venue for the first blitz this Saturday.
Last Saturday saw great excitement on the Rock as we played off our under 8 league semi-finals and finals. Group toppers Kerry faced fourth placed Donegal in semi-final one, with Armagh and Galway playing in the second semi-final. Both games were tight affairs, but Galway and Kerry advanced to the Sam Maguire final, with Armagh taking on Donegal for the Tailteann Cup. In the finals, as per all of our league matches so far, there were some fantastic skills on show, and some tight individual battles. Kerry finished the victors in the Sam Maguire final, but the Tailteann Cup finished all square and needed a penalty shoot out to decide the winner, always the same with Armagh, isn't it! Thanks to our referees, Barry Travers and Ethan Kerrigan, and to Nathan Boyle who presented the players with their medals.
Ladies
Aodh Ruadh had nothing to show for their long trip to Inishowen on Sunday morning to take on Moville in the senior championship. The weather was dreadful and had a significant impact on the game. Moville won the toss and smartly opted to play with the gale at their backs, a decision which saw them 1-1 up with 40 seconds played. They added another point 90 seconds later before Aodh Ruadh managed to mount and an attack which yielded a point for Eimear McMahon. Two further points followed for the hosts before Cáit Gillespie raised a white flag in the 8th minute. From that point on Aodh Ruadh struggled to get their kick out away and Moville picked off six points before hitting the net in the 20th minute to go 2-10 to 0-2 ahead. They tagged on another point before Caoimhe Keon took the bull by the horns and tore through the Moville defence before smashing an unstoppable shot past the keeper. The homesters replied with a point, but an Eimear McMahon free meant the Shamettes had the last say of the half as they turned around at 2-12 to 1-3.
Moville had the luxury of dictating the proceedings for the second half and that ensured scores were painfully slow in coming. Eimear McMahon accounted for the full Ballyshannon return over the course of the second half, a last minute goal dropped in over the goal-keeper's head seeing her chalk up 1-3 in that period. It wasn't enough to reel in a Moville side who had made the most of the elements in the first half, as it finished Moville 2-15 Aodh Ruadh 2-6. The Ernesiders had good showings from Katie McGowan, Caoimhe Keon, Eimear McMahon and Caoimhe Devine on a tough day to play football.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Bridín Maguire; Niamh Barrett, Roisin McGloin, Katie McGowan; Sara Gallagher, Anna Rafferty, Aoibhinn McGarrigle; Orla Keon, Caoimhe Keon (1-0); Lauren Foy, Cáit Gillespie (0-1), Andrea Moore; Caoimhe Devine, Eimear McMahon (1-5), Síofra Hughes. Subs: Terri Gallagher for Caoimhe Devine HT; Emer O'Brien for Anna Rafferty HT, Niamh Hoey for Síofra Hughes. The minor ladies were in Bundoran last Tuesday for their final round match in the league stages of their competition. They knew they had to outscore Saint Naul's who were taking on Letterkenny Gaels if they were to secure a home quarter-final. They had the good fortune to win the toss an played with the wind coming off the Atlantic. Despite having that assistance Aodh Ruadh found it difficult to convert scores, perhaps a testament to a derby rivalry where the teams knew each other well. Andrea Moore raised the game's first white flag after two minutes and three minutes later a great pass from Emily McNamee teed up Lauren Foy to fire to the net. Faye Gillespie and Rachel Gillespie added points before Eva McNamara got Bundoran up and running 12 minutes in. Faye Gillespie and Dáirín Sweeny then found the range, but Bundoran replied in kind. The last say of the half went the way of the Ballyshannon girls though with a fine Megan Murphy point making it 1-7 to 0-3 as the sides turned around. Facing the breeze for the second half Aodh Ruadh had a big job in hand, but a goal from Andrea Moore four minutes in got them off to a good start. Eva McNamara came back with a free, but Faye Gillespie responded with a quickfire 1-1 in the 46 minute to make it 3-7 to 0-4. Again Bundoran fired over two points, but Aodh Ruadh had goals in quick succession from Faye Gillespie and Hannah McGuinness followed by a lovely Aoife Travers point to clinch a 5-9 to 0-6 win. With Mountcharles only having a point to spare on Letterkenny Gaels, and Naomh Columba beating Glenswilly, that saw Aodh Ruadh finishing the league stages in pole position. It was a great showing from all the Aodh Ruadh girls. It was a brilliant display from the entire team, who lined out as follows: Tara Gallagher; Caitlin McGuinness, Katie McGowan, Aodhbha O'Donnell; Laoise Foy, Andrea Moore, Megan Murphy; Lauren Foy, Dáirín Sweeny; Rachel Gillespie, Aoife Travers, Emily McNamee; Caitlyn Gallagher, Faye Gillespie, Niamh Duffy. Subs: Aoife Hughes, Ellen Monaghan, Hannah Downey, Hannah McGuinness, Lily O'Donnell, Molly Begley, Rebecca Downey, Zara Begley. This Tuesday sees the team taking on Carndonagh in their county quarter-final. Throw-in is at 7pm in Father Tierney Park and we'd love to see a big home support there to get behind the girls.
Hurling
Congratulations to Tom Daly, David McLoone, John Larkin and all the Park Development Committee on their excellent hosting of the Peter O'Keefe tournament. It was great to see the return of this tournament to Father Tierney Park after a few year's break. There were six teams involved overall - Mayo, Monaghan, Fermanagh, Armagh and two Donegal teams. Armagh triumphed in the Cup competition after an impressive display in all three games, while the Donegal B team were unlucky to lose out to Monaghan in the Shield final. Peadar O'Keefe and his mother were on hand to present the awards to the winners on what was a very enjoyable day of hurling action. Congratulations to our very own, Eoghan McCadden who deservedly received the player of the tournament award in the Shield competition. That wraps up the 2024 County season for this group of lads. Well done to all our players on their season - Ethan Kerrigan, Antoin Duffy, Shaun McGarrigle, William Ryan and the twinners, Oisín and Eoghan McCadden. The under 12 team fell foul of the wet conditions on Sunday and had to take the decision to cancel their friendly against Manorhamilton / Glencar. They hope to reschedule to this coming Sunday instead.
Our under 10s had an all-county blitz on Friday evening in the Donegal Centre of Excellence in Convoy. Aodh Ruadh had two team in action on the evening with some great hurling on show. Under 10 training continues as normal, with under 10s training on Thursday evening and Sunday morning.
Our under 8s have no games this week, but training continues on Sunday at 11.45am.
O'Keefe Cup
Thank you to those who assisted with the hosting and running of the O'Keefe Cup finals at Father Tierney Park and Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh last Saturday. The participating counties were Mayo, Donegal and Armagh, with the latter coming through impressively as overall winners. Before the final, a minutes silence was observed in memory of Caolan Finnegan, the talented young Crossmaglen and Armagh player who passed away recently. Check out aodhruadh.org where we have a huge gallery of images from the tournament.Camogie
On Saturday the under 8, under 10 and under 11 camogie girls travelled to Cliffoney to take part in the Naomh Molaise Gaels Festival of hurling and camogie. We were delighted to play along side players from Tooreen, Easkey and Coolera / Strandhill as we celebrated our games with a monster blitz. The girls had a great day and all played so well and have grown great confidence. With Mona McSharry's Olympic home-coming taking place on Wednesday evening, underage camogie has been rescheduled to Thursday evening this week on the top pitch at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
