Football
Damian Weber kicked a last gasp winning free to earn a deserved win for the under 21s in Father Tierney Park on Sunday afternoon. Glenswilly came into the game on the back of an impressive win over Four Masters while Ballyshannon had to pick themselves up after a one point defeat away to Naomh Conaill. The opening stages of the first half saw Aodh Ruadh running out into an early three point lead, but from there to half-time the scores were shared evenly. Jack Gallagher was very much on song for the Ernesiders clipping five points over the course of that first half, with Matt Gillespie and Darragh Flood Dolan also raising white flags. Meanwhile Reid Kelly opened the scoring for the visitors with points from Mark Bonner, Jamie McCauley and a mark from Daithi Gildea leaving it at 0-7 to 0-4 come Shane Murnin's half-time whistle.
The intensity stepped up a notch in the second half, with plenty of hard hitting and strong tackling as the sides really got stuck in. This style suited the visitors better and Shane Tinney was to be the prime beneficiary. He got his first point of the game five minutes in, adding a free two minutes later to cut the deficit to a point. James Gallagher kept his side's noses in front with a beautifully struck 46 metre free off the ground. Glenswilly continued set the tempo though and two Tinney frees had the game level by the 43rd minute. Four minutes later and Glenswilly had finally hit the front with a Daithi Gildea dead ball. Parity was quickly restored when Murnin penalised an off-the-ball infraction with a 20 metre free which Jack Gallagher was never going to miss. That was followed by the best score of the match with Matt Gillespie making a glorious fetch in the middle of the park from Aaron Cullen's kick out. Gillespie then hit Jack Gallagher in space and he took on his man and curled over the bar. Glenswilly came right back and it was Tinney once more who delivered the goods splitting the posts with a quality left-footed effort. Four minutes from time Reid Kelly pointed for Glenswilly, and when Aiden Friel hared through an under-manned Erneside defence and fisted over it looked like the visitors might just edge this one. There had been an extensive stoppage in play earlier though following a heavy clash between Darragh Flood Dolan and Donal Gallagher, so, with plenty of injury time to be played Ballyshannon duly rolled up their sleeves. A Damian Weber free put the hosts back in touching distance, but with Glenswilly now playing keep-ball it wasn't looking promising. That was until Barry Campbell finally intercepted an overhead pass at full stretch and sent Aodh Ruadh off on the attack. Glenswilly had to concede the free and Jack Gallagher converted. Then with seconds remaining Aodh Ruadh went on the attack one last time. A despairing tackle from Donal Gallagher in the centre of the park saw him getting a black card for his troubles. From the restart Aodh Ruadh raced the ball into the danger zone where James Ward was up-ended, allowing Damian Weber to clinch the win with the last kick of the game.
For the hosts, Jack Gallagher was a menace any time he was on the ball, while Matt Gillespie and Barry Campbell both had strong outings, with James Ward providing a big impact off the bench.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen; Shane McGloin, Ryan Keenaghan, Aidan Sweeny; Darragh Flood Dolan (0-1), Colm McGloin, James Gallagher; Matt Gillespie (0-1), Shane Delahunty; Jake Foley, Cian Rooney, Mitch McLaughlin; Damian Weber (0-2f), Jack Gallagher (0-9, 6f), Barry Campbell. Subs: Ted O'Donnell for Shane Delahunty (inj.), James Monaghan for Jake Foley; James Ward for Mitch McLaughlin 40 minutes; Garvey Meade for Shane McGloin 56 minutes; Aengus Sweeny for James Gallagher 61 minutes.
We have a gallery of shots from the game live now on aodhruadh.org. The under 21s will are at home against this Sunday when Gaoth Dobhair will be the guests in Father Tierney Park. Throw-in for that one will be at 12 noon.

The annual general meeting of Bord na nÓg takes place on Thursday, 7th November at 8pm. All interested in the development of underage football in Ballyshannon are warmly invited to attend as we review 2024 and make preparations for the coming season.

Hurling
The Juvenile Hurling committee were delighted to have been able to host the Billy Finn and John Larkin memorial tournament recently. Despite two late withdrawals and horrendous weather conditions, the tournament was a great success. Teams travelled from Ballycastle, Dungannon and Mullingar to participate. There was some great hurling on display throughout the day and some fierce competition. The Finn Larkin Memorial Cup was won by Oliver Plunkett's from Mullingar in a hotly contested final with Ballycastle, and the Finn Larkin Memorial Shield was won by Dungannon who netted a last minute goal to beat the hosts, Aodh Ruadh, by two points. Teresa Larkin was on hand to present the awards and to say a few words about her late husband, John and family friend, Billy on behalf of both the Larkin and Finn families. Many thanks to all the teams for travelling such long distances in inclement weather and to our under 16 parents and guardians who played a blinder with the post match refreshments in the Áras. That is the last bit of hurling action for our underage teams this season and we hope all the boys and girls enjoy a good rest over the off-season!

The Juvenile Hurling Committee recently held its 2024 AGM. In front of a large attendance, and in the absence of any new nominations, the following officers were returned for 2025; Chairman - Eoghan Ruadh O'Neill, vice Chairman - John McCadden, Secretary - Orla Bannon, Lotto co-ordinator - Teresa Maguire. The position of vice-secretary was unfilled on the night and remains open. There was an extensive review of the 2024 season with reports from the Chairman, Secretary and all underage managers. Special mention was given to all the many sponsors who supported us throughout the year - Liam Gallen at Mr G's, Kevin Loughlin Plumbing, Diarmaid Whoriskey of Rathmore Mechanical Services, Paul Duffy, Owen Roe O'Neill, Beirne Racing, Lioscarran Group Ltd., Liam Gallagher, Aiden and Margaret Carty, Gary O'Brien, Kenny McDonald, James O'Donnell, John McGlynn, Letterkenny, MCM, J Kelly, Stranorlar and McPhelim coaches. Highlights of the year were identified by many and included the fantastic League title won by our under 12s, the inaugural hurling summer camp, the annual trip to Croke Park and the mammoth under 16 trip to Limerick. There was also a robust discussion on plans and projections for 2025. Many thanks to all who attended on the evening to lend their support.

Ladies
Best of luck to our under 23s who are taking on Saint Eunan's in the county A final between this Sunday. The decider takes place in Lifford with throw-in at 12.30pm, and we'd love to see a big crowd make the trip to get behind the girls for their last game of the season.

The under 13 girls hosted Malin in their county quarter-final on Saturday morning, and unfortunately a good season came to a disappointing end. The first half started slowly with little in the way of scoring chances, a Katie McLoughlin point opened the scoring before Malin hit the next three points. A really well worked Halle McGowan goal following link up play between Kayla McDermott and Emily Gallagher looked to settle the hosts, but Malin got the final score of the half to leave it a draw at half time 1-1 to 0-4. The second half unfortunately saw a number of fortuitous Malin goals as they stretched out in front, Aodh Ruadh, while far from their best kept fighting and stayed in the game through a brilliant Jenna Britton goal, and a point from Kayla McDermott and two points from Leia Roper. Unfortunately they ran out of time and ended up bowing out at the last eight stage on a final score of 2-4 to 3-6. On a day with no stand out performers the girls should be commended for their never say die attitude when things weren't going their way. While a disappointing defeat to end the campaign, It has been a positive season with the young team securing third place in the league.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Bethany McNamee, Saoirse O'Donnell, Amy McNeely, Emily Kane, Ava Garvey, Tiah Kane, Emer McGarrigle, Jenna Britton (1-0), Niamh Patton, Kayla McDermott (0-1), Leia Roper (0-2), Leah O'Malley-Malone, Emily Gallagher, Halle McGowan (1-0), Katie McLoughlin (0-1). Subs: Emma O'Neill for O'Malley-Malone HT, Bronagh Waugh for O'Donnell HT, Mia Duffy for Garvey 29 minutes, Kali Gallagher for E Gallagher 41 minutes, Catherine Garvey for McLoughlin 46 minutes, Eabha Hegarty, Shiloh Killalae, Sophia Hughes, Holly O'Neill, Alannah Brennan, Anna Meehan, Amelia Coyle.
We have a great gallery of shots from the game live now on aodhruadh.org. With the season at an end, thanks to all our committed coaches for their dedication all year through both the under 12 and under 13 season.

Football
The under 21s put in a lively showing in their last group game on Sunday, but it was Gaoth Dobhair who finished the stronger to make it three wins from three and top the group. Jack Gallagher started the scoring action in this game with a placed ball, and after the visitors hit two in reply Gallagher levelled matters with another free. The next ten minutes belonged to the highly-rated visitors though as they hit 1-3. The Ernesiders showed their resilience as they rallied in the run up to half-time with Cian Rooney and Jack Gallagher each hitting a brace of points to leave the half-time scores at Aodh Ruadh 0-6 Gaoth Dobhair 1-6. The homesters faced into the breeze in the second half, but they came out with all guns blazing and two fine scores from Jack Gallagher and Eoin Cassidy made it a one point game with 36 minutes on the clock. That was to be as good as it got though. Aodh Ruadh could only add one further point from Jake Foley, while Gaoth Dobhair made use of the elements tag on six points. A late goal put a gloss on the scoreline for the visitors as it finished Aodh Ruadh 0-9 Gaoth Dobhair 2-12.
The sides will meet once again this weekend, this time in the county quarter-final. That takes place in Magheragallon this Sunday at 12 noon. We wish the team and management the very best and our urge supporters to travel and get behind the team in this knock out clash.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers on Sunday were as follows: Tommy Clyne; Shane McGloin, Ryan Keenaghan, Aidan Sweeny; James Gallagher, Ted O’Donnell, James Ward; Colm McGloin, James Monaghan; Barry Campbell, Cian Rooney (0-2), Jake Foley (0-1); Eoin Cassidy (0-1), Jack Gallagher (0-5f), Diarmuid Flood-Dolan. Subs: Damian Weber for Diarmuid Flood-Dolan 28 minutes, Garvey Meade for Jake Foley 43 minutes, Diarmuid Flood-Dolan for Cian Rooney 54 minutes inj., Jake Foley for Barry Campbell 58 minutes. We have a gallery of shots from the game live on aodhruadh.org.

Bord na nÓg held their annual AGM in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh last Thursday. It was well attended with all age groups represented on the night. Reports were supplied for each team, as well as the Acadamy. The meeting offered Bord na nÓg an opportunity to reflect on another busy season, including focusing on some of the highlights of the year, from competing in a number of county finals to the success of our annual tournaments in different age brackets. Lots of positives around playing numbers were highlighted and we look forward to watching the progress of these young players over the coming years. Bord na nÓg would like to thank all the managers, coaches and parents for all their work and support over the last 12 months. We would also like to thank all our sponsors and anyone who supported our various fundraising activities over the past year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to training in 2025.

Ladies
Not to be for the under 23s on Sunday as they were second best to a strong Saint Eunan's team in the county final. The Aodh Ruadh girls were slow to get going, but were in touch at half-time. Saint Eunan's were 1-5 up before Eimear McMahon finally got her side off the mark after 20 minutes. The Letterkenny girls answered with a free, but Cadhla Dolan replied with a well taken point. Three minutes from the break Caitlyn Gallagher sent over an excellent score and was very unlucky a few moments later to see a shot on goal crash off the crossbar. That let off meant Saint Eunan's headed in for the break leading 1-6 to 0-3. The Ernesiders needed a strong start to the second half, but that failed to materialise. Instead Eunan's continued to mount up their tally over the third quarter. They had tagged on a further 3-5 by the time Aodh Ruadh next managed to register, Orla Keon finding some rare space in the leader's defence. That started a mini-rally of Ballyshannon scores with Gráinne Maguire and Cáit Gillespie pointing. Then eight minutes from time Lucy Currid was first to react to a loose ball in the area and finished well to the net. That was to be as good as it got for Aodh Ruadh though, as Eunan's reeled off 1-5 in the closing minutes to claim a merited 5-15 to 1-6 victory. Gráinne Maguire, Rebecca McLaughlin and Caitlyn Gallagher, as well as Andrea McGlynn and Lucy Currid off the bench were among the brighter lights for Aodh Ruadh on the day. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Brídín Maguire, Gráinne Maguire (0-1), Síofra Hughes, Rebecca McLaughlin; Aoibhínn McGarrigle, Lauren Foy, Caoimhe Keon; Emer O'Brien Orla Keon (0-1); Aoife Travers, Cáit Gillespie (0-1), Dáirín Sweeny; Eimear McMahon (0-1), Caitlyn Gallagher (0-1), Cadhla Dolan (0-1). Subs: Andrea McGlynn for Cadhla Dolan 38 minutes; Lucy Currid (1-0) for Caitlyn Gallagher 45 minutes; Emer McDevitt for Aoife Travers 45 minutes; Alexia McGuinness, Andrea Moore, Jessica O'Mahoney. This brings an end to the 2024 ladies football season for Aodh Ruadh. Many thanks to the players for their dedication all year and to everyone involved in management, coaching and support for the team.

The girls event gets under way at 4.30pm and is followed by the boys at 6.30pm where nearly minted All-Star Peadar Mogan and our very own ladies county star Caoimhe Keon will be the guests of honour. Football
Aodh Ruadh's last team in competitive action bowed out of the under 21 championships at the quarter-final stages on Sunday. Aodh Ruadh travelled to Machaire Gathlán to take on the hot favourite to win the competition outright, Gaoth Dobhair, on their home patch. The odds weren't in their favour, but they made light of that in a first half where they really carried the fight to the Gaeltacht men, aided by a following breeze. Jack Gallagher (3) and Cian Rooney were on the mark over the course of the first 30 minutes as the sides headed for the dressing room separated by the minimum, Gaoth Dobhair 0-5 Aodh Ruadh 0-4. The Ernesiders continued to play well on the resumption, but the elements made it difficult to convert their decent share of possession into scores. Gaoth Dobhair weren't hampered by such concerns though and a goal for them midway through the half left the visitors with a real uphill struggle on their hands, Jack Gallagher (2) and Eoin Cassidy did land scores over the course of the final ten minutes, but it was the homesters who progressed on a scoreline of Gaoth Dobhair 1-9 Aodh Ruadh 0-7. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Tommy Clyne; Shane McGloin, Ryan Keenaghan, Aidan Sweeny; James Monaghan, Eoghan Kelly, James Gallagher; Colm McGloin, Matt Gillespie; Sean Delahunty, Cian Rooney (0-1), Darragh Flood Dolan; Barry Campbell, Jack Gallagher (0-5), Eoin Cassidy (0-1). Subs Ted O’Donnell for Ryan Keenaghan; Tommy Clyne for Eoin Cassidy. Our thanks to the team management and the players for all their efforts over the course of this competition.

The curtain was drawn down on the Bord na nÓg season in spectacular style last Saturday at the awards night in the Abbey Centre. There was a capacity crowd in the theatre to welcome guest of honour, newly minted all-star Peadar Mogan, to Ballyshannon. After some well-judged words of welcome and thanks from Bord na nÓg chairman, Michael McGrath, Master of Ceremonies, Seán Perry, put Peadar through his paces with some interesting questions. The Saint Naul's ace enlightened the young players present with some inspirational observations drawn from his own long hard struggle to consistently competing at the highest levels of the game. After that it was on to the team presentations with Peader presenting medals to recognise their hard work and commitment over the course of 2024. The under 8, under 10 and under 12 squads were first up followed by the Bakery Cup teams. The event then moved on to the individual awards. These were as follows: Under 8 Most Improved Player of the Year: Fionn Slevin, Under 8 Player of the Year: Patrick McGonigle; Under 10 Most Improved Player of the Year: Cole McCaffrey, Under 10 Player of the Year: Luke Garvey; Under 12 Most Improved Player of the Year: Patrick McGurn, Under 12 Player of the Year: Ryan Neilan; Under 14 Most Improved Player of the Year: Alistair Cian, Under 14 Player of the Year: Marko Branley; Under 16 Most Improved Player of the Year: Finn Hartin, Under 16 Player of the Year: Joe Gibbions; Under 18 Most Improved Player of the Year: Johnny Lin, Under 18 Player of the Year: Tommy Clyne.
