Aodh Ruadh had to overcome the challenge of a dogged Milford outfit to secure third place in the championship table on Sunday afternoon with a clean sweep of four wins in the group stages. Milford were on home turf and battling for their championship lives and were never likely to lie down for John McNulty's men, and so it proved in this nervy encounter. Still, coming into the game on a high after sweeping aside Saint Naul's in some style the last day out, Aodh Ruadh continued where they left off here, coasting out into a 1-7 to 0-2 advantage. Diarmaid McInerney raised that green flag in the 17th minute as Aodh Ruadh quickly wiped out Milford's early two point salvo. The hosts rallied strongly before the break though and, with the help of a penalty, they had it back to 1-7 versus 2-3 at the short whistle. Aodh Ruadh retook the initiative at the start of the second half with Nathan Boyle rattling the net and David Dolan flighting over. The visitors took their foot off the pedal somewhat at that point and Milford were able to steadily inch their way back into the tie and cut Aodh Ruadh's lead down to the bare minimum. The Ernesiders put in some gritty defending though to see the game out and make it an impressive four wins from four. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Peter Boyle; Mark McGlynn, Conor Patton, Kyle Murray; Michael McKenna, Colm Kelly, Eddie Lynch; Eamonn McGrath, Niall Murray; Diarmaid McInerney (1-5, 3f), David Dolan (0-2), Shane McGrath; Philip Patton (0-1), Matt Gillespie, Nathan Boyle (1-1). Subs: Johnny Gallagher for Gillespie 45 minutes, Donagh McIntyre for McKenna 48 minutes. As with the senior game, the reserves survived something of a scare midway through the second half of their clash with Milford to book their place in the quarter-finals. Playing with the aid of a breeze the reserves took control of the game early on and raced into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead with some fine early scores from Spanny Goan, Jason Granaghan and Darragh Flood Dolan and an impressive mark from 40 metres by Senan Rooney. Hemmed in by the breeze, and strong Ballyshannon pressure, it took Milford some 12 minutes to get their first score on the board and that was as good as it would get for the homesters in the first half. Aodh Ruadh kept the score board operator busy though, with some clever attacking plays and further scores from Jason Granaghan (2), Conal Sweeny, Dan Warnock and the evergreen Kerry Ryan, fresh from his All-Ireland masters win earlier in the evening. That return meant Aodh Ruadh had a lead of 0-9 to 0-1 at the break. The second half against the breeze started as the first half began with Colm McGloin striding through to clip over a fine score from 25 yards. Mere seconds later McGloin ran through again and off-loaded to the on-running Harry Howarth who was unlucky to see his shot at goal come back off the crossbar. Aodh Ruadh continued to squeeze the Milford rearguard and Damian Weber sent over his first for the day after nice interplay with Senan Rooney. A further free from Weber followed and Aodh Ruadh looked composed and comfortable at 0-12 to 0-1, up until all of a sudden, they weren’t. Milford's rally started with a couple of frees and a well worked point from play before Aodh Ruadh were caught napping and the Milford full forward unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top left corner past a helpless Aaron Cullen. Then on the next Aodh Ruadh attack a shot dropped short and Milford worked an overload and the ball ended up over the line in a goal mouth scramble. Incredibly it was now 2-4 to 0-12 with Aodh Ruadh against the breeze and Milford on a roll. To their credit the Shams never faltered and steadied themselves immediately with Aaron Cullen bravely clipping the resulting kick out short for Ballyshannon to work the ball up the pitch where Damian Weber converted to put a goal between the teams with 12 minutes to play. A nervy last 10 minutes ensued with both teams guilty of some snatched efforts, but Aodh Ruadh showed great maturity and calmness in possession to work a couple of frees for Damian Weber to kill the game off in the dying stages. A frenetic 20 minutes for this young side, but a game that will stand to them. Best for Aodh Ruadh were the marauding Jason Granaghan with three points from wing back, Senan Rooney whose influence was missed when forced out with an injury, Darragh Flood Dolan who was a threat all day, and Damian Weber whose four second half points were the winning of the game.
We take a breather from championship action this weekend. The following weekend will see Aodh Ruadh take on Gaoth Dobhair in the Senior Football Championship quarter-final, while the senior development squad face off against Glenfin in their quarter-final.
Well done to the Donegal Masters who claimed the All-Ireland shield with a 1-5 to 0-7 victory over Galway in Collooney last Saturday. Our own Kerry Ryan and Dermot Slevin both made big contributions on the way to the All-Ireland success, and the lads will be in action again on Saturday, 17th September, at the Kick For Keegan at Bundoran's Gaelic Park. The Donegal Masters will be taking on their Mayo counterparts at 1pm in a charity match in support of Temple Street Children's Hospital with a raffle afterwards in the Quay West, Bundoran at 9pm. Donations can be made in advance at justgiving.com.
After a run of good results this season, the Aodh Ruadh minors came up against a very well-drilled Four Masters side on Friday evening in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. This Donegal town squad have been together since starring at Féile and are nearly all in their final year of minor football. Meanwhile Ballyshannon lined out a team of experienced minor campaigners, threaded with some promising under 15 talent. After a good start the Ernesiders, conceded a goal after a high speculative ball ended up in the top corner of the net. True to form, Four Masters were very clinical in front of goal throughout the game. Robbie Murphy pulled a goal back for the homesters in the second half, but it was an uphill battle as it finished Aodh Ruadh 1-8 Four Masters 3-12. Best for Aodh Ruadh on a tough night were Dara McGloin and James Monaghan. This Friday the minors are away to Naomh Conaill with a 6.30pm throw-in down in Glenties.
The under 13 Division 2 team played their rearranged game against Kilcar in Towney last Wednesday. It was another evening where the boys gave a good account of themselves against stronger opposition and despite losing still managed to get 1-10 on the score board. The Aodh Ruadh scorers were Anthony Duffy and Jack Gormley (0-4 each), Daniel McLoone (1-0) after a lovely chip pass from Ciaran McGuinness, Eoghan McNulty (0-1) and Jack Hassett also with a fine score. Both the Division 1 and 2 teams await the draw for their respective cup competitions which are due to start in a fortnight. Training continues on Wednesday and Saturday at the usual times.
The under 11 internal league began last Saturday with six teams playing three very close encounters. Daniel McLoone's team just pipped Senan Ward's side in a thrilling match. Conor Grimes' outfit beat Ciaran McGuinness's team in a high scoring shoot out, with only two points to spare. Meanwhile Peter Mulligan's charges just got the better of Liam Merrifield’s boys in the final game of the day. Many thanks to Eamon O'Donnell and Stephen Ward for officiating in these games. The schedule for the coming week sees the under 11 White squad entertaining Naomh Conaill in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Tuesday. All players should be at the Park for 6pm. Then on Saturday the Green squad make the short trip up the road for a blitz in Naomh Bríd. Further details on these fixtures will be posted in the team WhatsApp group over the course of the week.
The under 9s will have their final game of the season on Wednesday evening at home to Four Masters. Throw in is at 6.30pm. Training continues as normal on Friday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 6.15pm to 7.15pm. Please note the earlier start time.
Ladies
The Aodh Ruadh reserve ladies secured an impressive Junior B quarter-final victory over Red Hugh's on Sunday. In their two years in existence the reserve ladies have played Red Hugh's twice. Last year they experienced a sobering defeat against the Killygordon women, and earlier this year they marked their progress with a much closer game, which also ended in defeat for the Ernesiders. On Sunday the Ballyshannon girls seized the impetus from the off and never relinquished it. Points from Cadhla Dolan and Amanda Mahon were quickly followed by a goal by Mahon. The points continued to flow after that courtesy of Dolan (two frees), Lucy McGlynn and Sarah Daly. The killer second goal arrived when Katie O'Brien was alert to the short kick out and fed the ball off to Cadhla Dolan who dispatched coolly to the net. Further points from Sarah Daly, Emer O'Brien and Katie O'Brien saw Aodh Ruadh with a 2-9 to 0-1 lead at the interval. The job was only half done at the turnaround though, with the Shamettes now having to face into a strong breeze. The scoring rate dropped accordingly in the second half and after an early Cadhla Dolan free, Red Hugh's brought the scores back to 2-10 to 0-5, but had to work extremely hard for every point against a tireless Erneside defence. Having weathered this spell, Aodh Ruadh finished the stronger of the sides and points from Niamh Hoey and a beautifully finished goal from Cadhla Dolan after some great work by Niamh McGloin and Lucy McGlynn saw Ballyshannon finish winners on a 3-12 to 0-5 scoreline. A very strong performance from Aodh Ruadh in all sectors with Megan McGee and Roisin McGloin in defence, Emer O'Brien in midfield, and Cadhla Dolan in attack giving very strong displays. Unfortunately, we have to finish with a get well soon message for our hard-working Ladies chairwoman, Sarah Daly, who literally put her body on the line to get her side into the county semi-final and got a broken finger for her troubles. Speedy recovery Sarah! We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.This Sunday sees an unprecedented double-header of ladies championship games in Ballyshannon. The action gets under way with the Intermediate quarter-final between Aodh Ruadh and Robert Emmet's at 10.30am. That is followed by the Junior B semi-final between Aodh Ruadh and Kilcar. It would be great to see a massive attendance in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday on what is a truly historic day for women's football in the club.
The under 14s produced probably one of the best displays by an underage ladies team in the club this year in their county semi-final against Dungloe on Saturday. The girls were very much second favourites having sank to a heavy defeat against the Gaeltacht girls earlier in the year. However, huge work has been done with the panel over the course of the season and they showed all that in a brilliant performance in Páirc Aoidh Ruadh. The Ballyshannon girls really got stuck into their opponents and registered points from Ciara Larkin and Rachel Gillespie. Dungloe got a very fortunate goal though and that sent them in at the break leading by 0-5 to 2-1. The Ernesiders continued to fight tigerishly in the second half, with Erin Gallagher brilliant between the posts, Lily O'Donnell playing like a born full back and Emily McNamee and Megan Murphy working like dogs in the middle third. They had two further points from Katie McGowan, but Dungloe made the most of their chances to finish as winners on a scoreline of 0-7 to 2-6. With a bit of luck the game could very easily have gone the other way, but the squad deserve huge credit for giving their absolute all on the day. The club would like to thank Daniel, Paddy, Brendan and Louise for all their hard work with the squad all year, as well as all the parents for their support across the season also.
The Donegal LGFA PDP Programme concluded last Saturday with the Ulster under 15 Blitz in Cookstown and Aodh Ruadh were delighted to have four players pulling on the county jersey in a competitive fixture for the first time; Cádhla Dolan, Lauren Foy, Orlaith Gallagher and Emer McDevitt all doing the club proud.
Our under 10 girls travelled to Ardara on Friday evening for an enjoyable blitz. Aodh Ruadh fielded three teams with the opposition supplied by two teams from Ardara and one from Naomh Ultan. The Ballyshannon girls played some fabulous football in wet conditions. It was a great tournament and a great platform for the girls to show off their skills. Big thanks to Andrea and Seanie Rogers who laid on a minibus to convey the squad to Ardara.

Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh played host to MacCumhaill's for bhabhta a cúig of the under 15 league on Thursday evening. Still missing a few lads with holidays and injuries the homesters had 25 lads togged out on the evening. The first half proved to be a bit of a slow burner. Aodh Ruadh got the first point of the game with defences on top. MacCumhaill's got a few quick scores after that from frees and then near the end of first half the Ballybofey lads got the boost of a very fortunate goal to lead at half time by three points. Ballyshannon battled hard in second half and were rewarded with a goal midway through second half to bring it back to two points. However, MacCumhaill's came back to tag on a few more scores and eventually win by six points. Despite sinking to a first defeat of the season, there were plenty of good performances right around the field and all players got some game time. The team will certainly learn from this first set back. Next up for the lads is another trip to Convoy this Thursday where Buncrana will be the opposition.Sunday saw the return of the club's longest running hurling tournament, the Aodh Ó Dálaigh Shield. Five clubs joined Aodh Ruadh for a fabulous day of hurling activity in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, with our Leitrim neighbours in Manorhamilton entering two teams. There were some fiercely competitive games in the group stages, with Aodh Ruadh defeating Buncrana, as well as eventual winners, Cluainín Blues, and only losing by the narrowest of margins to Four Masters and St Molaise. With the conclusion of the group games the stage was set for the finals. Both Manorhamilton teams qualified for A final, with the Cluainín Yellows running up an early five-point lead. Their club mates rallied in the second half though to run out winners of the Ó Dálaigh Shield. The B final paired Four Masters against St Molaise Gaels, with Aodh Ruadh only narrowly missing out on a place in this game on their head-to-head record against the Grange men. Our Donegal neighbours proved too strong for St Molaise and were the victors of a hotly contested match. The C final saw the hosts taking on Buncrana. Aodh Ruadh suffered a setback in the opening exchanges when a speculative shot ended up in the back of the net. Captain for the day Alistair Cian rallied the troops and levelled matters with a well taken score, and both sides went on to trade scores in the run up to half time. Aodh Ruadh dominated the second half and finished the day as winners of the C final. With the on-pitch activity wrapped up, it was over to Aras Aoidh Ruaidh where the parents and guardians provided first class hospitality for all of our visitors before the presentations. Aodh Ó Dálaigh's grandsons, Ben and Joey were on hand to make the presentations, the Ó Dálaigh shield to Cluainín Blues, as well as presentations to each player of the match and the winning captains of the B and C finals. Ben thanked everyone for taking part as well as the Juvenile Hurling committee for organising the tournament. Thanks to all of the parents for providing goodies and thanks to our referees, Ellen and Hannah McGarrigle, Tommy Clyne, Cian McDonald, Caelan Drummond and Adam Rami for refereeing under the expert supervision of Eugene Drummond. Check out aodhruadh.org for a wonderful gallery of pictures from the tournament. That sees the curtain fall on the under 11 season. Thanks to all of the parents for driving to games as well as Liam Mealiffe, Robert Knott and Gregory Gallagher for looking after the team. We look forward to welcoming them back in 2023.
Under 9 training continues every Sunday, with new recruits always welcome.
Our under 7s took a team down to a blitz down in Setanta on Friday evening. The boys played in four games, drawing two and winning two, but most importantly having a great evening of hurling fun. They have another blitz this weekend against Four Masters in Donegal town.
Our under 5s will finish their year with a mini-sports day this Sunday morning at 11am in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Football
All eyes turn to Senior Football Championship quarter-final action this weekend and the meeting of Aodh Ruadh and Gaoth Dobhair in Killybegs. That game takes place on Saturday with throw-in at Eamonn Byrne Memorial Park down for 3.30pm. Meanwhile our senior development squad take on Glenfin in their quarter-final in Killybegs on Saturday at 5.30pm. We wish both teams and management the very best of luck as they bid for semi-final berths this weekend.Aodh Ruadh's minors came up short against a good Naomh Conaill team on Friday night in Davy Brennan Memorial Park. The Ernesiders were wasteful in front of goal in the first half which ultimately cost them dearly. Dara McGloin scored a goal in that first period with a good soccer style finish. Naomh Conaill were powered by the formidable Finnbar Roarty in midfield. Shane Delahunty was tasked with marking him in what proved to be a great battle. Aodh Ruadh were seven points down during the second half, but fought back to within two points. Garvey Meade really helped the cause as he hit the net with a second goal. In the end it finished Naomh Conaill 2-9 Aodh Ruadh 2-7. Aodh Ruadh were well served by Corey Sheridan in goals and Aiden Sweeny who had a great battle with Naomh Conaill's number 14, Danny Brown. Subs, Garreth Brennan, Liam Doogan and Barry Campbell also impressed when introduced. Next up Friday are Termon in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 7pm.
The draw for the under 13 Cup competition has put the Division 1 team up against Urris, Sean MacCumhaill's and Saint Eunan's in the group stages, whilst our second team will take on Dungloe B and Termon B. The first round of games are fixed Sunday, 25th September. Training for the week will be communicated through the parents WhatsApp groups.
The Aodh Ruadh under 11 Green squad travelled to Naomh Bríd yesterday for a very well ran blitz, and came back up the road with the two cups. Well done to all the players, and thanks to Naomh Bríd for the invite. This week the Green squad travel to Saint John’s in Sligo on Saturday for another blitz. Details for this fixture will be posted in the team WhatsApp group.
The under 9s played their final game of the season on Wednesday evening at home against Four Masters and the 28 boys put in a huge effort over the three games. Training continues as normal on Friday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 6.15pm to 7.15pm. This Friday the boys will get their photo taken for the annual Aodh Ruadh team shot project, so we want to see as many lads up as possible for that.
Ladies
Sunday was a great day for ladies football in the club, with 44 players pulling on the jersey and both adult teams progressing in their respective championships. The opening game of the day saw the Aodh Ruadh senior ladies taking on Robert Emmet's in the Intermediate quarter-final. The game finished 4-14 to 2-3, a scoreline which probably doesn't reflect the sterling effort put in by the Castlefin ladies. In very damp conditions, Aodh Ruadh did a good job of making their chances count. An early goal by Cáit Gillespie on four minutes was followed shortly after by a second green flag by the Creevy lady before Terri Gallagher showed nerves of steel as she picked her spot when on on one with the keeper to make it 3-4 to 0-2 on the quarter hour mark. Aoibhínn McGarrigle and Cara O'Loughlin both were among the points as the sides turned around with Aodh Ruadh leading by 3-9 to 1-2. There were fewer fireworks in the second half as Aodh Ruadh played against the slope and the breeze, but Eimear McMahon did hit the net for a fine goal to complement her handsome eight point haul. It was a very complete display by the Shamettes with a resolute defensive display helmed by Sara Gallagher in very testing conditions proving a big factor in the win. Tireless running in the middle third from Caoimhe Keon, Tara Khan and Cara O'Loughlin ensured a good supply of a ball for an attack which was on top form, especially Eimear McMahon and Cáit Gillespie. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Brídín Maguire; Grainne Maguire, Sara Gallagher, Hannah Doherty; Meabh McCloskey, Caitlin McGarrigle, Anna Rafferty; Orla Keon, Caoimhe Keon; Cara O’Loughlin (0-1), Cáit Gillespie (2-3); Aoibhínn McGarrigle (0-1), Eimear McMahon (1-8), Terri Gallagher (1-1), Tara Khan. Subs: Síofra Hughes for Cara O’Loughlin 37 minutes, Tia McFarland for Meabh McCloskey 44 minutes, Donna Martin and Mary Flora Scott for Anna Rafferty and Cáit Gillespie 54 minutes. We have a gallery of pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org.The Junior B semi-final saw Aodh Ruadh reserves facing Kilcar's first team. The first half was a very evenly fought affair with Ballyshannon just about edging matters. Captain Amanda Mahon got her side off the mark with an early point, but Kilcar quickly responded and soon led by a point. Cadhla Dolan levelled matters before netting the games first goal to propel her side into a lead they would not relinquish. The Towney girls came back with the next two points of the game to cut Ballyshannon's lead to the minimum, but again Dolan had the umpire reaching for their green flag, this time with an improvised soccer strike to the back of the net from an acute angle. Kate Cunningham and Ana Keon (2) followed that with further points as the short whistle sounded with Aodh Ruadh leading by 2-6 to 0-4. The homesters now turned to face the breeze and the slope, but those factors didn't halt the flow of Aodh Ruadh scores. Lucy McGlynn, Niamh Hughes and Cadhla Dolan (2) were all on the mark, but Kilcar showed they weren't about to lie down with a well taken goal in response. Although they were still ten points adrift there was still plenty of time left for the Kilcar girls to pull the game out of the fire. That hope was extinguished by a lovely Ana Keon goal, and while Kilcar did register the next two points, the clock was very much against them now. Aodh Ruadh added two further Cadhla Dolan frees, and while Kilcar had the final say on the score board, it finished Aodh Ruadh 3-13 Kilcar 1-7 and the Ballyshannon girls could celebrate booking their county final place. It was a great team display by Aodh Ruadh, however Ana Keon probably edged the player of the match honours. Between her tackling, her relentless running and her scoring, there doesn't seem to be a facet of the game where she doesn't excel. Lucy McGlynn, Emer O'Brien and Kate Cunningham supplied blistering athleticism in the middle third which eventually broke Kilcar's resistance. Up front Cádhla Dolan was simply unmarkable, but she also made a decisive tackle which halted a dangerous Kilcar move. Proof she is expanding her game as she becomes an ever more promising talent. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Roisín Maguire; Fiona McGonigle, Megan McGee, Shauna Dolan; Ana Keon, Lucy McGlynn (0-1), Fódhla Sheerin; Emer O'Brien, Saoirse McDevitt; Niamh Hughes (0-1), Kate Cunningham (0-1), Roisin McGloin; Katie O'Brien, Amanda Mahon (0-1), Cadhla Dolan (2-6, 5f). Subs: Rionach Sheerin for Fodhla Sheerin, Orlaith O'Neill for Amanda Mahon, Niamh McGloin for Shauna Dolan, Niamh Hoey for Niamh Hughes, Hannah McGuinness for Katie O'Brien; Katie Gallagher, Aoife Bromley, Ciarde Sheerin, Sarah Daly. Check out aodhruadh.org for a big gallery of pictures from the game.
The senior ladies are at home again this Sunday as they entertain Naomh Muire in the Intermediate Championship semi-final. Throw in at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh will be at 10.30am. Meanwhile our reserves will be working hard over the next fortnight as they prepare for their Junior B final decider with Naomh Pádraig, Muff.
On a perfect evening for football our under 13 girls recommenced their season with a game against MacCumhaill's on the county pitch. Once again Aodh Ruadh had great numbers to pick from and all 27 girls got game time. In a very close contested game the Ballyshannon girls won by a point in the end with a Faye Gillespie pointed free after some brilliant work from Zara Meade. Going into the break with a five point lead thanks to a wonderfully worked goal from Lauren Gallagher, MacCumhaill's came back strong and chipped away at the Ernesiders' lead. However, some brilliant defensive play from Lily O'Donnell and Emma Travers kept the hosts at bay. For Aodh Ruadh there were some great performances from the younger girls who grew in confidence as the game went on. Up front Emma O'Donnell was outstanding and was well supported by the Gillespie cousins and midfield duo of Laoise Foy and Aodhbha O'Donnell.
Hurling
Our under 17s returned to action on Sunday evening in Páirc Aodh Ruadh, facing up to Dungloe in their championship semi-final. Conditions were far from ideal, but we led from the opening exchanges, and even though Dungloe provided a physically robust challenge, our boys had a bit more hurling and ran out comfortable winners in the end. We have a gallery of pictures from the semi-final up on aodhruadh.org for viewing now. The under 17 final is fixed for Sunday, 25th September, where they will meet the winners of the semi-final between Carndonagh and Saint Eunan's, which has gone to a replay after a draw on Sunday. Best of luck to the team and management in the final.Buncrana had insufficient numbers to field for last Thursday's under 15 match, so the sides were mixed and had a fun game in Convoy. This Thursday the under 15s are taking on MacCumhaill's in the league final. Venue and time are yet to be confirmed.
Our under 13s play host for the Seamus Grimes / Alan Ryan tournament this Sunday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The last time this tournament was held was in 2019, and after not being able to run it due to Covid, it is great to be in a position to run it again this year. The action starts at 12.30pm, with a round of group games followed by finals for both trophies.
Under 9 training continues this Sunday, with a time to be confirmed.
Last week our under 7s travelled down the road to our neighbours, Four Masters, where we took part in a very enjoyable blitz. We had one team entered and played against MacCumhaill's, and games against two Four Masters teams. This Sunday will be their last outing of the year when the travel to the All County Blitz in Convoy.
Our under 5s had a rainy sports day to finish off their year. The boys and girls took part in a poc fada competition, egg and spoon race, obstacle course, penalty shoot out and finished off with a match. They were all presented with a medal to mark their participation for the year and some treats. We look forward to welcoming them all back for under 7s in 2023!

After last week's media coverage, Aodh Ruadh could have been forgiven for wondering if there was any point heading to Fintra on Saturday afternoon. The pundits in print and broadcast uniformly wrote them off and the bookmakers had priced them up as 3/1 outsiders in a two horse race. Finishing third in the league and coming through the championship group stages with a 100 percent record obviously didn't count for very much. Still, John McNulty's men headed up the road to Killybegs to fulfil the fixture.
Both sides were nervy in a first half where Aodh Ruadh had the benefit of the slight following wind at Fintra. We had to wait fully 12 minutes for the game's first score with Micheál Roarty fisting over, that followed shortly after by a point from Daire Ó Baoill. That finally roused the Ernesiders and Nathan Boyle was upended for a free which David Dolan boomed over the black spot. Neil McGee edged his side two in front again, but a spectacular effort from Philip Patton ensured there was the minimum between the sides after a tense first 30 minutes. The game was slightly more fluid in the second half and that suited Aodh Ruadh a bit better as they seemed to gradually cast off some of the mental shackles. Another sumptuous effort from Philip Patton brought the sides level, but points from Gavin McBride and Neil McGee pushed Gaoth Dobhair two ahead again. Then, with 37 minutes on the clock, the Ernesiders had a wonderful chance to get their noses in front, but Philip Patton's audacious lob came agonisingly down off the crossbar and Gaoth Dobhair breathed again. Aodh Ruadh did get back on level terms though, with two delightful points from Michael McKenna and Diarmaid McInerney making it five points apiece. Trevor Alcorn's side rose to the Erne challenge with three points on the spin from Eamonn McGee, Domhnaill Mac Giolla Bhride and Seaghan Ferry. However, if Gaoth Dobhair thought they had weathered the storm they were mistaken. Aodh Ruadh threw caution to the wind in the closing stages and carried the game to the Gaeltacht men. David Dolan was unlucky to see a driving shot on goal flash to the right of posts, but points from Philip Patton and Diarmaid McInerney did cut the deficit to a solitary point. with the clock running down, the Gaoth Dobhair defence were at full stretch to stop Jason Granaghan popping an equaliser, as Aodh Ruadh pinned their opponents into their final third. The final act of this drama was still to come though. Mark McGlynn, who had a brilliant 60 minutes, danced through on goal and backed himself as he went for the jugular. The Aodh Ruadh support held their breath waiting for the net to bulge, but desperate last-ditch defence and perhaps a bit of a crafty tug ensured that McGlynn's effort didn't find the net. The final whistle sounded seconds later and it was absolute heartbreak for the Aodh Ruadh men. So, so close. An extremely tough result to take, but it's important to put the defeat in context. Last year Aodh Ruadh exited the championship tamely at the hands of Saint Michael's. This year they were the only team to take a member of the big four the distance in the championship quarter-finals. They made the travelling support in Killybegs proud and showed that Ballyshannon are a real rising force in the county once more. Thanks to the players and management and everyone involved in the squad for all the good days they gave us this year, and keep the faith for 2023.
For the record, the Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Peter Boyle; Mark McGlynn, Conor Patton, Kyle Murray; Michael McKenna (0-1), Colm Kelly, Niall Murray; Eamonn McGrath, David Dolan (0-1f); Diarmaid McInerney (0-2), Shane McGrath, Philip Patton (0-3); Eddie Lynch, Matt Gillespie, Nathan Boyle. Subs: Cian Rooney for Matt Gillespie 44 minutes; Jason Granaghan for Michael McKenna 48 minutes; Donagh McIntyre for Nathan Boyle 56 minutes. The Senior Development squad also just missed out on progression to the championship semi-final in agonising fashion after an extra-time thriller against Glenfin. Playing against the breeze Aodh Ruadh came roaring out of the blocks, with an early free from Damian Weber getting the Ernesiders off the mark. Despite controlling possession in the first 20 minutes Aodh Ruadh couldn’t make their early dominance count on the score board with a swirling breeze making scoring difficult. Glenfin settled towards the end of the half with a couple of long range frees and hit a three pointer when a blocked effort at a point dropped fortuitously into the path of Darren Marley for him to finish to the back of the net and leave the scores at 1-4 to 0-1 at the short whistle. Reinvigorated by half-time and energised with the introduction of Mardy McGarrigle and Luke Carr Aodh Ruadh set about hunting down Glenfin and while the sides traded early points Aodh Ruadh’s dominance was starting to show. With Mardy McGarrigle, Gary Carty, Cian Dolan and Colm McGloin to the fore and continually driving at Glenfin, Aodh Ruadh finally got the rewards their pressure deserved when Damian Weber slammed home a goal to leave three in it with 15 minutes to play. Glenfin responded quickly, but Aodh Ruadh hit the final four points of normal time, much to the delight of the Aodh Ruadh crowd that remained following the senior fixture. With time almost up Aodh Ruadh worked two glorious chances to win it at the death. The first came after clever link play between Ryan McKenna and Mardy McGarrigle sent Sticky Ward through, but his shot off the left boot tailed agonisingly wide at the last second. Aodh Ruadh turned over the resulting kick out and drove hard, but Chris Goan saw his effort sail to the right and wide. Aodh Ruadh looked the more likely to win the contest, even with the dismissal of Kerry Ryan in the first period of extra time. The sides were level with five minutes remaining and Aodh Ruadh were pressing hard, but an unfortunate defensive slip allowed Darren Marley to fire home into an empty net to put a goal between the teams. Sticky Ward pulled one back, but the clock was against Aodh Ruadh now and Glenfin held firm to win on a final scoreline of 1-9 to 2-8. There were some brave performances from Ballyshannon against an experienced and physical Glenfin outfit. Cian Dolan in his first start for the club after a long-term injury was colossal in midfield and his physicality was a great foil for the lively Colm McGloin. Defensively, Ryan Keenaghan did a great man-marking job on Glenfin’s talisman, Daniel Marley, keeping him scoreless from play. Meanwhile, Dan Warnock won a lot of breaking ball to give Aodh Ruadh the platform to get back into the game in the second half. Senan Rooney broke a lot of lines for Aodh Ruadh and was badly missed after a dead leg called an early halt to his afternoon. The impact off the bench of Mardy McGarrigle, Luke Carr, Gary Carty, Ryan McKenna and Sticky Ward were all central to the Aodh Ruadh fight back and Damian Weber was particularly unfortunate to be on the losing side after some excellent individual attacking forays. With this game marking the end of the season for the senior development squad, the club takes this opportunity to thank the management and team for all the time and effort they invested over the course of 2022, it is hugely appreciated.
It was a disappointing performance from the Aodh Ruadh minors on Friday against a well-drilled Termon outfit in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The Ernesiders were short a few key operators for this tie, but they managed to get off to a flier with a great goal from Shane Delahunty. That was as good as it got though, with Ballyshannon struggling to get their hands on primary possession. Termon were powered by their excellent midfield pairing of Cian McMenamin and John-James Sweeney who held sway in the middle third. Aodh Ruadh fought hard though and Robbie Murphy and Garreth Brennan were among the homesters' best performers. The visitors had the better of things overall though, and were good value for their 1-7 to 2-17 victory. Next up for the minors is a trip to Letterkenny this Friday evening where they will be taking on Saint Eunan's in their last championship group game.
Our under 13 boys teams get their much anticipated cup competitions started this weekend. The Division 1 team host Urris on Sunday, whilst our second team travel to Dungloe. This match is also scheduled for Sunday, but may be changed to Monday so keep an eye on the team WhatsApp group for details. Training takes place as usual on Monday and Wednesday.
Our under 11 Green squad travelled to Sligo club Saint John’s on Saturday for a brilliantly organised blitz, with teams from Sligo, Donegal, Leitrim and Mayo attending. Aodh Ruadh had two teams involved, with both sides putting in a serious effort and displaying great determination, whilst playing some excellent football. Team One played five games, winning all five. Team Two also played five games, winning two, and narrowly losing the other three. This younger group particularly impressed management with their battling displays against their older and physically stronger opponents. The under 11 management would like to thank the Saint John’s club for hosting us at this superbly run blitz, and for the food and refreshments supplied to all our players. The under 11 schedule for the coming week is as follows. On Wednesday the White squad are away to take on Naomh Conaill and players should be in Glenties for 5.30pm. Then on Saturday the under 11 internal league returns. Players are asked to be up for 3.30pm for the annual team picture, which will appear on the club poster and calendar. Games will be over at 5.30pm. Finally, next Sunday we will have a squad travelling to a blitz in Ederney, county Fermanagh. They play at the under 10.5 age grade in Fermanagh, so players travelling to that blitz will be receiving a private message with the details.
Under 9 training continues as normal on Friday evening at Coláiste Cholmcille from 6.15pm to 7.15pm. This will be the last session of the year. We had Brian Drummond up at last Friday's session and he got a great wee gallery of pictures from the evening which you can check out on aodhruadh.org.
Ladies
Aodh Ruadh senior ladies bridged a nine-year gap since their last intermediate championship final appearance with a barnstorming second half display against Naomh Mhuire in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday morning. It was a great morning for football, with Munday's in perfect condition for the county semi-final and a good crowd present for the action. The Ernesiders started brightly with points from Aoibhínn McGarrigle and Caitlin McGarrigle. The Annagry girls struck back hard though and by the ninth minute they led by 0-2 to 1-2. Aodh Ruadh responded strongly, with a point from Eimear McMahon followed by a well-taken goal from Cáit Gillespie. The sides swapped points over the next couple of minutes before the visitors raised their second green flag of the game, courtesy of their dangerous wing forward. Once again, the Shamettes refused to be rattled and within a minute Eimear McMahon had the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-4 to 2-3. Aoibhínn McGarrigle and the Annagry number 12 exchanged scores before the last say of the half went to McMahon, who slotted the final two points, the sides switching around at Aodh Ruadh 2-7 Naomh Mhuire 2-4. The Gaeltacht girls were quick out of the traps in the second half and quickly narrowed the margin to two points. Ballyshannon steadied the ship though and, with the defence doing some immense work, picked off a couple of points to keep themselves just at arm's length. Then, as the game moved into the final quarter, Aodh Ruadh went up through the gears with goals in quick succession from Caoimhe Keon and Cáit Gillespie. The final ten minutes saw the sides go point for point, but Aodh Ruadh had done enough by that stage and progressed to the county decider on a scoreline of Aodh Ruadh 4-13 Naomh Mhuire 2-8. It was a great all-round display from the Shamettes against top quality opposition, with the team really having to dig in to get the result. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Brídín Maguire; Gráinne Maguire, Sara Gallagher, Hannah Doherty; Meabh McCloskey, Caitlin McGarrigle (0-1), Anna Rafferty; Caoimhe Keon (1-0), Orla Keon; Aoibhínn McGarrigle (0-2), Cáit Gillespie (2-0), Cara O'Loughlin; Eimear McMahon (1-9, 3f), Terri Gallagher (0-1), Tara Khan. Subs: Erin O'Loughlin for Maeve McCloskey HT; Síofra Hughes for Terri Gallagher 51 minutes. We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. Ballyshannon will now face Ardara who got the better of Gaeil Fhanáda by two points after extra-time their semi-final. That intermediate county final will take place on the weekend of 1st / 2nd October. All eyes this week turn to the Junior B final where Aodh Ruadh will be taking on Naomh Pádraig, Muff. Our reserve ladies have made this final in only their second year in existence and that is a testament to the massive amount of work the team have put in. The game takes place on Sunday with a 10.30am throw-in at the Red Hugh's grounds in Killygordon. This is a great, honest bunch of girls and they really deserve your support, so please come along and get behind them. The next couple of weeks will also see our seniors working hard on the training pitch as they prepare for their Intermediate decider against Ardara.
Monday evening's county board meeting saw the draw made for the under 21 championship and Aodh Ruadh were drawn against Milford in the first round. This grade is confined to ladies born between 2001 and 2005, and the first round games have been initially slated for Sunday, 16th October.
On a great morning for football the under 13 girls played another challenge match against Four Masters last Saturday. With both teams having great numbers to call on the game was split into three 20-minute games. The older girls took the field for the first 20, the younger girls for the second and a combination of both for the final 20 which ensured all the girls got plenty of game time. After a sluggish start the Ernesiders found themselves down by 3-0 to 0-1 after 10 minutes, but fought back to just trail by two points at the first interval thanks to the scoring and hard work of Rachel Gillespie. With a new team out for the second 20 the younger girls acquitted themselves magnificently with Faye Gillespie taking charge in midfield and Lexi Roper breaking up attacks from centre half back. A goal from Aoife McPhelim ensured the game was all square going into the final 20 minutes. Four Masters restarted the game in fine form scoring 1-2 without reply, but a wonderful individual goal from Emma O'Donnell and a Laoise Foy penalty put our girls back on top. With Erin Gallagher pulling off some unbelievable saves the girls held out for a two-point win, but, as has been the case over the years, there was absolutely nothing between the two teams. In a fiercely contested and entertaining game the final score was Aodh Ruadh 6-5 Four Masters 5-6. A great squad effort from the girls and a big thanks to the Four Masters team and management for coming to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. We have a great gallery of pictures from a frenetic evening of action on aodhruadh.org.
The under 8 girls enjoyed a competitive blitz on Saturday morning in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Four Masters travelled with large numbers and three seven-a-side games were run simultaneously in glorious sunshine. A large crowd of spectators gathered and gave plenty of encouragement along the sidelines. There was plenty of footballing talent on display with both sides very evenly matched. Aodh Ruadh will make the return trip next Saturday to Donegal town with throw-in at 10.30am. Thanks to all the referees, spectators, and parents who helped out with the teams and catering. Check out aodhruadh.org, where we have a great gallery of pictures of the action.
Best of luck to Aoife McPhelim, Rachel Gillespie, Cadhla Gillespie, Aodhbha O'Donnell, Emma O'Donnell, Lily O'Donnell, Ellen Monaghan, Laoise Foy and mentor Eamon O'Donnell who will all be in inter-county this action against Tyrone this Saturday. Eight teams from each will be battling it out in an inter-county under 13 blitz, times and venues to be confirmed.

The under 17s are currently continuing their preparations for the Championship final against Saint Eunan’s on Sunday, 25th September.Aodh Ruadh under 15s were in the county grounds last Thursday to play MacCumhaill's in under 15 hurling league final. The Ballyshannon lads got off to a great start, going three points to no score up with 15 minutes gone. Aodh Ruadh were playing all the hurling and MacCumhaill's were pinned in their own half for most of the first 20 minutes. With some slick passing and movement, the Ernesiders were four points to two up and should have been further ahead, but they missed some chances and a couple of goal chances weren't capitalised on. In such one opportunity Liam Doogan was clean through on goal and the defender just cleaned him out. MacCumhaill's then had their purple patch in the last 10 minutes of first half. They scored 2-3 with Ballyshannon only able to muster a point in reply, and Ben Daly having to pull off a great save to deny a third goal. At the interval the score read Aodh Ruadh 0-5 MacCumhaill's 2-6. The hosts then tagged on the first two points of second half to put nine points between the sides. Aodh Ruadh weren't done just yet though and came to life again, scoring four points on the trot, one of which would not have been out of place in Croke Park. It started with Ben Daly finding Joe Gibbions with a sweet puck out and Gibbions firing a cross-field ball to the opposite 65 straight into Corey Sheridan’s hand and he turned and struck over from about 55 metres. MacCumhaill's rallied though and hit two more points to go seven up again. Again, the Aodh Ruadh lads never stopped and never gave up and fired over the last two points, however the all-important goals simply wouldn't come. Aodh Ruadh won the second half six points to four, but it was MacCumhaill's who prevailed 0-11 to 2-10. Ballyshannon had outstanding performances all over the pitch, from Ben Daly in goals and Jayden McGrath-Clyne in second half, up to Dara O'Mahoney at corner forward. We now look forward to championship where we hope to get another shot at MacCumhaill's. The year is certainly not finished yet for these lads.
Aodh Ruadh were delighted to welcome the return of the Alan Ryan / Seamus Grimes tournament on Sunday after a two year break due to the pandemic. Four teams lined out on the day – Aodh Ruadh, Glencar / Manorhamilton, Enniskillen and Naomh Molaise Gaels. Blessed with some lovely weather, the crowd were treated to some great displays of junior hurling. The spoils were won on the day by Glencar / Manorhamilton who took the Seamus Grimes trophy home with them. The Alan Ryan trophy is still to be played for, details to be confirmed. Many thanks to all the parents who came along on the day and lent their support and provided the welcome refreshments afterwards. We have a big gallery of pictures from the afternoon's action up on aodhruadh.org. Training for the under 15 panel continues this week as usual on Tuesday at 5.50pm. Next up for these lads is the Championship. The draw is yet to take place, but the games will not be starting until the end of the month.
Our under 9s have a blitz to look forward to this weekend, with details to be confirmed via the team WhatsApp groups.
Our under 7s attended their final blitz of the season in Convoy on Sunday. It was a great day of hurling with lots of treats afterwards. Many thanks to all the parents for travelling and for their support throughout the whole season.

Football
The minors' final group stage meeting with Saint Eunan's was rescheduled and will take place this Friday at 6pm in O'Donnell Park. We take this opportunity to extend our sincerest sympathies to the Devenney and Sullivan families on their truly unfathomable loss. The under 13 boys Division 1 team got their much-anticipated cup competition started last weekend with Urris making the long trip south on Sunday morning to play at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh in the Division 1 cup. It was a very competitive match played in wet conditions, with Urris having the best of a frantic opening six minutes that saw five goals scored to lead 3-0 to 2-1. As the game settled down both teams went toe to toe, with the visitors in control at the interval leading by 3-9 to 3-4. The Aodh Ruadh first half scores came courtesy of Callum Dorrian (3-1), MJ Ward (0-2) and a point by captain Eoghan Gallagher. Aodh Ruadh were much improved in the second half and held the visitors to a single point, and although scores were hard come by as conditions deteriorated. The boys dug deep to claw back to within a point, but needed a late goal from MJ Ward to secure the win on a final scoreline of 4-10 to 3-10. The second half points came from MJ Ward (1-4), Darragh McCready and Callum Dorrian. Marko Branley stood out as the most determined player on the pitch, dominating his position in defence. Again Eoghan Gallagher led the team through his work rate and commitment, with the McCadden twins also really pushing on in the second half. Next up for the Division 1 team is Sean MacCumhaill's on Sunday morning in Ballybofey. The second team's journey to Dungloe was deferred and will now take place this Wednesday at 6pm. Best of luck to all our under 13 players this coming week. Training and match arrangements will be shared on the team WhatsApp group.
The under 11 internal league continued with week two games. Again, there were some great games on display, with wins for Senan Ward's team over Peter Mulligan's outfit, Conor Grimes' squad getting the better of Peter Merrifield's team, and in the game of the day, Ciaran McGuinness’s side just about got past a battling Daniel McLoone's team. Thanks to our refs Dermot Slevin, Anthony Coughlin and Darren McGuinness. Next Saturday the league will return for round three, and boys are to be up for 4pm.
Last Sunday, our under 10.5 boys travelled to Ederney for a blitz, attended by teams from Donegal, Fermanagh and Tyrone. We had two squads attending. Our squad one played some super football but lost their semi-final by two points after a battling display. Our team two played brilliantly and made it the whole way to the final, only to lose out in the end by a couple of points. The management team were delighted with both squads efforts, and would like to thank Ederney Saint Joseph's club for inviting us to such a brilliantly organised blitz.
The under 9s finished up for the season on Friday evening with a fun session and presentation of medals. A huge well done to all the boys, parents, guardians and coaches for all their hard work throughout the year. Special mention for James Carr who only missed one training session throughout the year.
As the on-field action begins to wind down preparations commence for the Bord na nÓg AGM. This will take place on Monday, 24th October at 8pm in Áras Aoidh Ruaidh.
Ladies
The junior Aodh Ruadh ladies had a heart-breaking defeat in Killygordon on Sunday morning. They faced a Naomh Pádraig, Muff side chasing their club's first ever adult ladies title. Aodh Ruadh were looking to make some history themselves with a first ever Junior B title for the club. The loss of the side's heaviest scorer, Cádhla Dolan, was a big blow shortly before the game, but Ballyshannon were still determined to give it their all in this decider. Muff went out hard from the start and had 1-2 on the board before Aodh Ruadh got off the mark with a Katie O'Brien free. After that the Shamettes started to come more into the game and two quality goals from Lauren Foy and Kate Cunningham meant it was 3-4 to 2-6 at half-time. The second half again saw Muff get off to a great start with an early goal, but Aodh Ruadh really dug in and started to play some of their best football of the final. A penalty was awarded for a heavy foul on Sarah Drummond, which was crisply dispatched by Kate Cunningham. That was followed by a driving score from Lucy McGlynn and superb goal from Lauren Foy before our Ladies chairwoman then dusted herself down to pop over a point and send her side into a two-point lead, 4-8 to 4-6, with 12 minutes remaining on the clock. Muff managed to get back in front and were four points to the good with a few minutes remaining. Then came a key sequence where Aodh Ruadh were denied a second penalty as a Ballyshannon player was fouled as they went for a shot on goal. Muff then moved the ball up the pitch and were awarded what looked like a soft spot kick up the other end. The upshot was Muff saw the game out to take the title on a scoreline of 6-10 to 4-9. The final result rather flattered the victors and didn't do full justice to the immense effort the Aodh Ruadh girls had put in. Luck played its role too, with the woodwork working against Ballyshannon at times and some shots going agonisingly wide. It was a very tough defeat to take for the Aodh Ruadh girls who had put in such a huge amount of work to get to this point. It was a massive team effort from all 18 players who took the field, but some individuals do deserve special mention. Megan McGee was a class act in a defence which really had its hands full with Ava Walsh. In the end Aodh Ruadh could never fully get on top of Walsh and she was the difference between the teams on the day. Ana Keon again was unsparing in her efforts and it was gutting to see her come off with a hamstring injury after having given so much. Elsewhere in defence, Lucy McGlynn did everything in her power to get her team across the line. Up front Kate Cunningham probably had her best game in an Aodh Ruadh jersey, which is saying something, meanwhile Lauren Foy seemed to be everywhere and, not for the first time in 2022, this outstanding young footballer showed herself to be a huge prospect for the future. Katie O'Brien was another player who had her best game this year, taking care of a number of tricky frees with minimal fuss at key moments when Aodh Ruadh needed scores. Rionach Sheerin also made a fantastic impact off the bench, proving very effective around the congested middle third. The season has now concluded for the reserves, but all that means is that we now have one adult panel, which will now move towards final preparations for the upcoming intermediate final. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Roisin Maguire; Fiona McGonigle, Megan McGee, Shauna Dolan; Ana Keon (0-1), Lucy McGlynn (0-2), Roisin McGloin; Saoirse McDevitt, Emer O'Brien (0-1); Niamh Hughes (0-1), Sarah Drummond (0-1), Kate Cunningham (2-0); Katie O'Brien (0-3f), Amanda Mahon, Lauren Foy (2-0). Subs: Ríonach Sheerin for Amanda Mahon HT; Fódhla Sheerin for Roisin McGloin 46 minutes; Niamh McGloin for Ana Keon 57 minutes. As alluded to above, the focus for the adult Aodh Ruadh ladies must now rapidly switch from last Sunday's heartbreak to the challenge awaiting on Sunday coming. That sees Aodh Ruadh taking on Ardara in the intermediate county final. The game takes place in Letterkenny's O'Donnell park as the curtain raiser to the senior ladies final clash between Glenfin and Termon. Throw-in on Sunday for the intermediate final is at 12.30pm. The Aodh Ruadh ladies are bidding to become the first club in the county to win three intermediate titles, the previous two coming in 2005 and 2010. We had great support in Killygordon last Sunday, and we would love to see that and more in O'Donnell Park as this exceptionally hard working and dedicated bunch of girls look to do the league and championship double.
Well done to the eight Aodh Ruadh girls; Aoife McPhelim, Rachel Gillespie, Cadhla Gillespie, Aodhbha O'Donnell, Emma O'Donnell, Lily O'Donnell, Ellen Monaghan, Laoise Foy and mentor Eamon O'Donnell who were in action at the under 13 PDP blitz at the County Centre of Excellence on Saturday. It was a great day of activity, with a very high standard of football on show.
The Aodh Ruadh under 10s were also in action over the weekend with a squad of almost 30 young ladies making the trip to Grange for a very enjoyable blitz. This wraps up the team's activity for the year. We would like to thank all the players for their efforts over the course season as well as all the parents and guardians for their help and backing along the way, and, last, but by no means least, all the team coaches and mentors.

Our under 17s took on Saint Eunan's in the Centre of Excellence at Convoy on Sunday in their championship final. Playing against a very strong wind in the first half, the Aodh Ruadh lads found scores difficult to come by, registering only a point in the first half. Ballyshannon were particularly unlucky from placed balls, with the strong wind working against them. Saint Eunan's found the going easier with the help of the wind, and struck over a number of fine points in the first half, and held the lead at half-time, 0-8 to 0-1. After the half time break, Aodh Ruadh worked themselves back in to the game, with a number of well taken frees reducing the gap to three points. However, the Cathedral town men then registered their first score of the half. The supporters were on the edge of their seats as it looked like the Ernesiders were going to overcome the half-time deficit, but Eunan's worked their way back into the second half. A number of good Letterkenny goal chances were only denied thanks to some excellent goal-keeping. A brace of Aodh Ruadh scores did cut the gap down to just two points, but with seven minutes left on the clock a speculative shot for a point from Saint Eunan's dropped short and ended up in the back of the net to put five points between the sides. The Ballyshannon lads continued to battle on and got it back to a two point game again, but the goal they needed just wouldn't come. With four minutes of injury time played, Saint Eunan's hit another point, to finish off the game with a four-point lead on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-9. With this game concluding minor action for the year we say a huge well done to the team and management on a great season. A special mention to Rian Kane, James Gallagher, Maitiu Tierney, Cian McKenna, Mickey Doogan, Tommy Winters and Kenzie Ayres, who have now played their last underage hurling game for the club. We wish them the best of luck in their senior careers. The next outing for our under 15s will be a championship semi-final against either Burt or Saint Eunan's on Thursday, 6th October in the County Centre of Excellence. Throw-in time will be confirmed closer to the date.
Our under 9 team travelled to our Leitrim neighbours Cluainín Hurling Club in Manorhamilton. The boys put in a great performance, and each of the 12 boys that travelled got plenty of game-time. Conditions weren't ideal for hurling, but the sweets provided by the Manorhamilton team made up for a few wet jerseys! Thanks to all the parents for travelling and all the players for their efforts on the day. This Sunday sees the team hosting a blitz at home and details will be provided in due course on the team WhatsApp group.
