Football
A huge crowd made their way to Convoy on Saturday evening for the Senior Football Championship meeting between Aodh Ruadh and Saint Eunan's. It proved another marker of the Ernesiders progress over the past few years, but once again Aodh Ruadh were unable to surmount the quarter-final hurdle. Down as 5-1 outsiders, the underdogs couldn't have got off to a better start with Eunan's caught badly exposed and David Dolan through one on one with Shaun Patton. Dolan was never going to miss from there. Three minutes later Diarmaid McInerney stretched the advantage with a deftly taken point, however that was to be his last scoring contribution to the game as he exited with injury in the tenth minute - a serious blow to Ballyshannon's cause. The Letterkenny men opened their account shortly after, but it took another 18 minutes before the next score arrived, this one coming off the boot of Cian Rooney after a series of heavy challenges. The 2022 county finalists registered the last score of the half with a free in first half added time, but Aodh Ruadh went in the break with the lead and in a good position to push on.
The opening stages of the second half were tit for tat. First Cian Dolan screwed over a great shot 25 seconds in before Saint Eunan's came back with two points in reply. Philip Patton then tapped over a 20-metre free in the 39th minute to keep Aodh Ruadh in the driver's seat at 1-4 to 0-4. Saint Eunan's then registered a point before one of the game's turning points arrived. A long ball was floated in on top of David Dolan in the area, but the big man was kept physically rooted to the turf by being unceremoniously held down and then grounded by his marker. However, Robbie O'Donnell's attention must have been on the flight of the ball, as he missed what was a clear penalty. Saint Eunan's then went up the pitch and picked off a point as Aodh Ruadh were committed to the attack. The Letterkenny men started to reel off the points now with half-time sub Niall O'Donnell making his influence felt. They took the lead in the 46th minute and added a further five points over the next 12 minutes to move into a 0-13 to 1-4 lead. Aodh Ruadh didn't lie down though and in the 58th minute there was no holding Cian Dolan down as he made a huge fetch from a long ball into the area before slipping the ball under Shaun Patton. Mark McGlynn then popped over a point to make it a two point game. Aodh Ruadh were chasing the game hard now, but this left gaps in the Erne rearguard and Eunan's used to this opportunity to net a goal with the last kick of the game and put a gloss on the final scoreline which didn't really reflect the balance of proceedings.
A disappointing way for the championship campaign to have ended. There was no reward for winning all the games in the group stages of the competition, and we are now in the odd position where a team which played in the preliminary quarter-finals is now guaranteed a place in the county final. Meanwhile Aodh Ruadh have lost one game and their championship is over. Aodh Ruadh have been one of the most consistent teams in the county over the past few years, finishing third in the league in successive years and making the quarter-final on three occasions now. That's a tribute to the work and effort the lads have put in, and we hope they can lift their spirits once again for 2024, because we know there are big days in this team yet. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Peter Boyle; Kyle Murray, Conor Patton, Colm Kelly; Michael McKenna, Eamonn McGrath, Niall Murray; Shane McGrath, Cian Dolan (1-1); Diarmaid McInerney (0-1), Cian Rooney (0-1), Philip Patton (0-1f); Eddie Lynch, David Dolan (1-0), Eoghan Kelly. Subs: Mark McGlynn (0-1) for Diarmaid McInerney 12 minutes, Darren Drummond for David Dolan 49 minutes, Nathan Boyle for Cian Rooney 51 minutes, Jack Gallagher for Eoghan Kelly 60 minutes. We have a gallery of pictures with a lot of crowd shots up on aodhruadh.org. With the senior season now over, we thank the players and management for the huge amount of time, effort and passion they have invested over the course of the season.

The high point of the weekend was undoubtedly the reserves clinical disposal of Saint Eunan's in their quarter-final curtain raiser on Saturday evening. The sides both felt their way into the game in opening period, and were deadlocked at three points apiece going into the second quarter, Sticky Ward, Damian Weber and Odhran McGarrigle raising the white flags for Ballyshannon. Letterkenny registered a free in the 18th minute, but from there to the break it was all Aodh Ruadh, with Damian Weber playing a starring role, clipping two points from play and an exquisite free off the deck on the stroke of half-time to send his side in leading by 0-6 to 0-4.
The Ernesiders laid down an early marker seconds into the new half with the Saint Eunan's keeper having to be at his best to deny a David McGurrin shot at the expense of a point. Eunan's did come back with two points, but the imperious Darragh Flood Dolan kept two in it with a superb score. Then in the 37th minute Dolan got through for a shot at goal only to be denied by a brilliant save by the keeper. The ball came back out to Dolan though and he made no mistake at the second time of asking. That was followed two minutes later by as good a goal as would have been scored anywhere in the country last weekend. A clairvoyant pass from Sticky Ward found Darragh Flood Dolan in the area. He calmly assessed his options before coolly laying off to his brother Tiernan Flood Dolan who stepped his man and smashed to the net. That made it 2-8 to 0-6 and Aodh Ruadh now had one foot in the semi-finals. Damian Weber added a free before Eunan's registered their first score in ten minutes. The Letterkenny men kept up the fight over the closing quarter, knocking over a point from play and free before netting a penalty to make it 2-10 to 1-9. However the last action of the match saw Aodh Ruadh romping up the field on the counter and it was Darragh Flood Dolan who set up David McGurrin to palm to the net for the coup de grace as it finished Aodh Ruadh 3-10 Saint Eunan's 1-9. A magnificent performance from the Ballyshannon men, especially in the second half where they really cut loose. It was built on a strong and disciplined defensive display with Johnny Gallagher calling the shots. In midfield Odhran McGarrigle and Colm McGloin gave their side a great platform to transition into an attack where every member had brought their A game.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen; Gary Carty, Michael Ward, Ryan Keenaghan; Colm McGloin, Johnny Gallagher, Aidan Sweeny; Odhran McGarrigle (0-1), Colm McGloin; Darragh Flood Dolan (1-1), David McGurrin (1-2), Tiernan Flood Dolan (1-0); Damian Weber (0-5, 3f), Sticky Ward (0-1), Cathal Kelly. Subs: Aonghus Sweeny for Luke Carr, JJ Cassidy for Sticky Ward. We have a gallery of shots from the game, along with plenty of spectator shots, live now on aodhruadh. org.

The reserves are in last four final action this weekend with Kilcar standing between them and a county final appearance. The semi-final takes place in MacCumhaill Park this Sunday at 2pm and serves as the curtain raiser to the county semi-final between Naomh Conaill and Saint Eunan's. It goes without saying that we would love to see a big Ballyshannon backing down there to get behind this team, they really deserve your support.

We wish our minors the very best of luck in the Division 2 Championship Shield Final against Malin this Friday. The game takes place at the Centre of Excellence in Convoy at 7pm and we urge a big Ballyshannon crowd to make a trip to get behind the boys for this one.

On Friday the under 13 Division 1 team travelled to Buncrana to play in the shield semi-final. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be on the evening with Buncrana running out winners. The Aodh Ruadh lads got off to a good start, but couldn’t convert some early chances. The young Aodh Ruadh lads fought to the end, and if we played the game as well as we did the last 15 minutes the result could have been very different. Good performances from Jack Hassett, Alex Kerrigan and Iarla Hartin were very encouraging. This brought down the curtain on the division 1 team's competitive football for 2023. There will be brighter days ahead for these young Aodh Ruadh players as they showed real sparks during the season.
The Division 3 team made the trip to Na Rossa on Sunday in their shield semi-final, the boys put in their best performance of the season and came away with an emphatic win. There were plenty of scores from Louis Hassett, Ciarán McGuinness and Donnacha Conlon, and solid performances from Harry McGowan and John McHugh in the back line. Although Phelim Barron didn’t have his busiest evening, he did everything required from him really well, Senan Ward, Aiden McGurrin and Peter Mulligan worked up and down the field from the half back line. Dara McGuinness and Daniel McLoone saw loads of ball all over the pitch, Diarmuid Fox and Joseph Devanney chipped in with a few scores between them while Pauric McGrath saw loads of action in the second half. Now the team have a shield final to look forward too with training continuing for the full squad on Friday from 6pm to 7pm.

The under 11 internal league continued on Saturday morning with wins for Tom and Donnacha, and our third game ending in a draw between Louis and Dara. The final round of games will take place this weekend. Time and date will be confirmed on the team WhatsApp group.

Ward appointed county minor manager
Congratulations to our own Barry Ward who was ratified as Donegal minor football manager for 2024 at Monday evening's county board meeting. We wish Barry and the team all the very best for the coming season.

Ladies
The Aodh Ruadh adult ladies season wrapped up in disappointing fashion in the Centre of Excellence on Saturday afternoon. The Junior ladies faced Saint Michael's in the Junior Championship B Shield final. The Dunfanaghy girls dominated the first half which was played in awful conditions, but Aodh Ruadh kept plugging away and were well in touch at half-time. The Reds got a goal after 20 seconds to give them the perfect start and followed that up with a free three minutes in. Mary Flora Scott opened Aodh Ruadh's account a minute later with a lovely effort from a narrow angle. Over the quarter hour mark Saint Michael's and Donna Martin swapped points before four further points for the Bridge side sent them seven points ahead. Just before the break though Donna Martin picked her spot for a crucial goal to leave just four between the sides. That was followed by an incident which had no place on a football field, or anywhere else for that matter. Roisin McGloin was on the ball near the sideline and was fouled. The Saint Michael's player then struck McGloin to the head with a blow which left her head ringing for hours after. The referee decided a yellow card was sufficient sanction in this incident.
The second half proved a low scoring affair for much of its duration, with three Saint Michael's points answered by a Gráinne Maguire free and a second Mary Flora Scott point which came with just three minutes remaining. But with two minutes of time remaining Aodh Ruadh put together a good move and Donna Martin got on the end of it to palm to the net and make it 2-4 to 1-9, and game on. Seconds after that it looked like Aodh Ruadh were sensationally going to take the lead, but Aoife Bromley's precise shot amazingly hit off one upright, rolled across the goal line, hit off the other upright and bounced back out into play. Saint Michael's reacted strongly and hit five unanswered points to secure the Junior B Championship Shield on a scoreline of 1-13 to 2-4. Absolute heartbreak for a squad who have worked so hard over the years since reserve ladies football first came to the club. The game marked Donna Martin's last competitive game for Aodh Ruadh. She left the pitch battered and bruised, but unbowed and having given her absolute all to get her team over the line. The defence were very strong in the face of a robust and very physical Saint Michael's side, with Roisin McGloin deserving particular praise for continuing to play on under the circumstances. Up front Mary Flora Scott and Katie McGowan tried their hardest, but openings were hard bought. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows. Roisin Maguire; Shauna Dolan, Megan McGee, Lauren Moore; Niamh McGloin, Shelly Loughlin, Roisin McGloin; Fiona McGonigle, Dáirín Sweeny; Katie McGowan, Mary Flora Scott (0-2), Amanda Mahon, Niamh Hoey, Grainne Maguire (0-1), Donna Martin (2-1). Subs : Aoife Bromley, Ciarde Sheerin, Hannah McGuinness, Emily McNamee, Megan Murphy, Andrea Moore. We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who lined out for the adults Aodh Ruadh ladies teams this year, as well as the management team and everyone who helped out across the course of the year.

The under 23 championship commences this weekend with Glenfin the guests in Father Tierney Park for the opening game of the round robin section. Throw-in will be at 10.30am on Sunday morning.

The under 13 girls were on their travels again last Saturday, heading to Glenties this time for their latest outing in the league. The Ballyshannon girls had a good start to the game, but after that the homesters began to get on top of things and ran out deserved winners in the end. Once again Erin Gallagher did really well in goals while Jenna Britton and Kate McGrath covered every blade of grass in the defence. Elsewhere, Emma Travers put in serious shift in the half forwards line. Training continues on Thursday as usual with the girls preparing for a home match this Saturday against Saint Naul's. Throw-in for that one is 11.00am.

Training continues for under 8 and under 6 girls from 5pm to 6pm on the Coláiste Cholmcille pitch on Tuesday evenings. Our under 10s continue training on Monday evenings.

Aodh Ruadh will be taking part in the under 21 hurling championship this season. We would like to invite anyone interested in joining the squad to contact Daithi Breen on 087-9287965.

Our under 15 squad were left disappointed in Convoy yesterday after losing out in the league title decider to MacCumhaill's by three points. The game started off on the right foot with our lads quickly collecting two points early on in the game and continuing to lead throughout the first half. On the wrong side of some very dubious refereeing decisions, it wasn't long before the lads felt very aggrieved and unfortunately this boiled over into tensions on the pitch. Things only got worse after Shay Winters received a red card and found himself relegated to the bench and the team down a man. Nevertheless, the boys went into the half-time break ahead by five points on a scoreline of Aodh Ruadh 0-6 MacCumhaill's 0-1.
MacCumhaill's, as they have a tendency to do so, came out blazing in the second half with a few early scores. Our boys battled hard in what was a seriously tough and physical game, but the heads went down after MacCumhaill's found the back of the net and went ahead. MacCumhaill's then had a man sent off, but the Ernesiders didn't capitalise on this as the opposition sent another two shots over the bar. Our boys continued to push hard and even had a goal chance hit off the woodwork but it wasn't to be. After only their second defeat of the season, the boys limped off the pitch battered, bruised and downhearted. They will have a well deserved break this week as they await word of their Championship semi-final opposition, which could quite possibly be MacCumhaill's again. That game is scheduled for Thursday, October 12th.

Our younger age groups had a very enjoyable trip to the cinema on Sunday evening. Players from the under 7, under 9 and under 11 squads were all invited. The movie of choice was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and we hope the boys weren't too enthusiastic showing off the moves they seen at school on Monday! Thanks to Bernie, Emma and Susan for keeping order on the night.

Scór Sinsear
The very best of luck to our Ceol Urlise group of Sean O’Brien, Cíarde Sheerin, Lorraine O’Brien, Michael McGrath and Rionach Sheerin who will be contesting the Ulster Scór Sinsear semi-finals this Sunday at the Dun Uladh complex in Killyclogher, Tyrone.

Football
Aodh Ruadh bridged a 21 year gap on Sunday in MacCumhaill Park as they saw off the challenge of Kilcar to book their place in the Senior Reserve county decider for the first time since 2002. They had to fight hard for their final berth though, with the Towney men pushing all them the way. Kilcar opened the scoring two minutes in, but Donagh McIntyre levelled it up seven minutes later as the sides felt their way into the game. Kilcar answered that with a brace of points, but the Ernesiders responded in kind, Dan Warnock and Sticky Ward sending over from play to leave it three apiece with 13 minutes played. As the game ticked into the second quarter, Kilcar and Sticky Ward swapped points again. Then, with six left in the half, the Shams took the lead for the first time with Damian Weber pointing from play. The advantage didn't last long though, with two rapid Kilcar points putting them back in front. Sticky Ward did square matters up again, but Kilcar finished the half strongly and two more points from them sent them in at the break leading by 0-8 to 0-6. Ballyshannon needed a big second half, and they duly delivered, with Sticky Ward laying down a marker with a point two minutes in and Damian Weber quickly following that up to restore parity once again. David McGurrin then opened his account for the day to take Aodh Ruadh back in front, but as the game moved into the final quarter Kilcar hit another quickfire brace to wrest back the lead. From here to the finish Aodh Ruadh were to dictate, starting with Sticky Ward squaring matters again in the 47th minute. The Ernesiders finally hit the goal they were threatening two minutes later, Damian Weber with a lovely finish. Kilcar, did come back with a point in the 50th minute, but Damian Weber sent over a free with five minutes left to put a goal in it again. Kilcar continued to battle and hit two more points, but the coup de grace came four minutes into added time when Marty McGarrigle clipped home a trademark effort to definitively book Aodh Ruadh's place in the county final. A wonderful and resilient performance from Aodh Ruadh who stood up well to this difficult test. They will now enjoy the next two weeks as they prepare for a county final battle with Gaoth Dobhair. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows Aaron Cullen; Luke Carr, Michael Ward, Aidan Sweeny; Gary Carty, Johnny Gallagher, Dan Warnock (0-1); Odhran McGarrigle, Colm McGloin; Darragh Flood Dolan, David McGurrin (0-1), Tiernan Flood Dolan; Damian Weber (1-3, 1f), Donagh McIntyre (0-1), Michael 'Sticky' Ward (0-5, 1f). Subs: Ryan Keenaghan for Luke Carr 49 minutes; JJ Cassidy for Colm McGloin 55 minutes; Marty McGarrigle (1-0) for David McGurrin 61 minutes.

Unfortunately poor weather saw the minor final postponed last Friday. We await details for the refixed game and will hopefully have these up on our social media output later this week.

Under 13 training continues this week on Friday from 5.45pm to 6.45pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The Division 3 team is waiting confirmation on their Shield Final which is expected to be played this weekend. Keep an eye on the club's social media output over the week for updates.

The final round of our under 11 internal league continued on Sunday morning with three very tight games resulting in wins for Donnacha, Tom and Louis. Our three finals will take place this Saturday, 14th October at 11.30am. Final one will be Donnacha versus Tom, final two is Dara versus Louis, and final three will be Pauric versus Hugh. It is hoped that the games will be in Father Tierney Park, but this will be confirmed on the WhatsApp group. We will be taking the under 11 team shot also at this event and this will conclude the lads' season for the year.

Our under 7 boys took part in a blitz hosted by Erne Gaels on Saturday, with games against Melvin Gaels, Bundoran, Glencar Manorhamilton, Grange and the hosts. Many thanks to the Belleek club for the invite and a good day of football.

Ladies
The under 23s got their championship campaign off to a good start in an unseasonably sultry Father Tierney Park on Sunday morning. Aodh Ruadh dominated possession throughout and Convoy were confined to sporadic raids into the homesters defence. Eimear McMahon set the tempo early on, rattling off 1-2 before the game was five minutes old. Mary Flora Scott then chipped over a nice point before the McMahon show resumed. Convoy raised two white flags over the remainder of the first half, but in that time McMahon had helped herself to a further 1-4 to send the sides in at Aodh Ruadh 2-8 Convoy 0-2. The Saint Mary's girls came out with the bit between their teeth in the second half and registered the first point five minutes in. That was to be their last scoring contribution though, with Niamh Hoey firing over to restore her side's 12 points cushion. Eimear McMahon sent over from play and dead ball before Orla Keon came through for a well-taken point and Cait Gillespie converted at the end of a good team move. That left it Aodh Ruadh 2-13 Convoy 0-3 at Greg McGroary's long whistle. A very polished display by the Shamettes. Eimear McMahon was scoring for fun up front with good support from Niamh Hoey and Mary Flora Scott, while in the midfield Orla Keon and Dáirín Sweeny were in great form. In defence Síofra Hughes and Ciara Caldwell swept up a lot of possession and keeper Roisin Maguire dealt well with a few dangerous balls. The next outing in the under 23 championship is on Saturday 21st October against Glenfin.

Well done to Amanda Mahon and the AIB GAA ladies football team who were the winners of the LGFA Interfirms competition on Saturday.

Our under 13 girls got back to winning ways with a comprehensive victory at home on Saturday against Saint Naul's. Leia Roper, Kate McGrath, Faye Gillespie and Jenna Britton all starred in a game where Aodh Ruadh produced some brilliant flowing moves. Training continues as normal on Thursday, with the team scheduled to play Bundoran away on Saturday morning.

Training continues for under 8 and under 6 girls from 5pm to 6pm on the Coláiste Cholmcille pitch on Tuesday evenings. Our under 10s continue training on Monday evenings.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh will be taking part in the under 21 hurling championship this season. We would like to invite anyone interested in joining the squad to contact Daithi Breen on 087-9287965.

Our under 15s have been busy preparing hard for yet another head to head with MacCumhaill's. The two teams square up for the third time this season when they meet in the Championship semi-final in Convoy on this Thursday. With one win each to date and a league final defeat for our lads to come back from, this will be a titanic battle. Throw in will be at the later time of 8.30pm and large travelling support would be fantastic. These lads have worked so hard this year and with a number of titles under their belt and only the one defeat, they will be hoping to be on top form.

Scór Sinsear
Huge congratulations are in order for our Ceol Urlise group of Sean O’Brien, Cíarde Sheerin, Lorraine O’Brien, Michael McGrath and Rionach Sheerin who booked their place in the Ulster Scór Sinsear finals last Sunday. They took to the stage at the Dun Uladh complex in Killyclogher, Tyrone and saw off the challenge of county champions from Antrim Cavan and Tyrone to make the Ulster final.

Camogie

Football
The very best of luck to our reserves in the county final this Sunday against Gaoth Dobhair. The last time an Aodh Ruadh team of any stripe took to the field on county final day was when a Barry Gallagher helmed reserve outfit saw off the challenge of Killybegs 1-10 to 0-10 in the 2002 curtain raiser. We hope to see a large and vocal Ballyshannon contingent making their way to MacCumhaill park this Sunday, with the reserve game between Aodh Ruadh and Gaoth Dobhair throwing in at 1.45pm, followed by the senior decider between Naomh Conaill and Gaoth Dobhair at 4pm. Another incentive for Ballyshannon fans to make their way to Ballybofey will be the spectacle of our 1998 county champions being honoured before the senior final. Tickets are now available to purchase online.

It wasn't to be for Aodh Ruadh's minors as they took on a lively Malin outfit in the Division 2 Shield final on Saturday afternoon. Played at a blustery Convoy in front of a large crowd, the Ernesiders got off to a great start with James Monaghan pointing after a strong driving run not long after the throw-in. Then in the ninth minute Eoin Cassidy used his wits to bat a loose ball into the path of Garvey Meade who stroked home the game's first goal. A minute later Ballyshannon extended their advantage with MJ Ward fisting over after a superb pass from the energetic James Ward. Malin responded well though, and hit back with a 1-2 salvo of their own between the 14th and 16th minutes to level the tie. Aodh Ruadh bounced back with a neatly taken point from Oran Gillespie, but needed Corey Sheridan to be at his athletic best up the other end to deny a goal at the expense of a point. The Inishowen lads followed that up with a brace of points, but with Eoin Cassidy hitting an outstanding effort in reply and Corey Sheridan making some exceptional saves, there was just the minimum between the sides at the break, Aodh Ruadh 1-4 Malin 1-5.
Malin hit the first score of the new half, but MJ Ward did really well to win a free after some tough challenges which Eoin Cassidy converted. Then Barry Campbell threaded over a fine placed ball in the 39th minute to square the game up at 1-6 apiece. Aodh Ruadh then moved back into the lead in the 39th minute when Caolán McCauley applied the finish to their best move of the game. Malin fired over two points as the game moved into the final quarter, but another crisp dead ball effort from Barry Campbell levelled the game once more with 12 minutes left to play. It was anyone's game now, but disaster struck for the Ernesiders four minutes from time with Malin being awarded a penalty. This was dispatched to the net despite the best efforts of Corey Sheridan to give the opposition a big shot in the arm with time rapidly running out. Aodh Ruadh pushed hard and did manage an answering free from Eoin Cassidy, but the goal they needed just wouldn't come and so Malin prevailed on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-9. Not the way we wanted the season to end, but that's sport unfortunately. Corey Sheridan was outstanding in goals, with Garreth Brennan and Ted O'Donnell standing out in a defence which had its hands full with a lively Malin attack. Captain James Ward left absolutely everything on the pitch and played his heart out. James Monaghan worked hard in midfield with Barry Campbell and MJ Ward trying their best to work chances in a congested attack. Joseph Gibbions also contributed well on his introduction.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Corey Sheridan; Garreth Brennan, Rian McCauley, James Ward; Tommy Clyne, Ted O'Donnell, Liam Doogan; Garvey Meade (1-0), James Monaghan (0-1); Caolán McCauley (0-1), Eoin Cassidy (0-3, 2f), Oran Gillespie (0-1); Barry Campbell (0-2f), Dara McGloin, MJ Ward (0-1). With the minor season now concluded we extend huge thanks to the committed management team and players who gave their all for the jersey this year.

The under 14 Bakery Cup winter league commences this Thursday at 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Under 13 training continues this week on Friday from 5.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The Division 3 team is waiting confirmation on their Shield Final which is expected to be played this weekend. Keep an eye on the club's social media output over the week for updates.

The under 11 boys finished up their season with the internal league finals on Saturday morning. Some 54 boys took part in the competition which was played off over the past six weeks, cumulating in three very closely fought final games. In final three, all friendships were put aside with Pauric McGrath defeating Hugh Mealiffe, with little separating the boys at the end. Final two saw another close encounter, where Creevy neighbours Dara McGuinness and Louis Hassett went head-to-head with Dara coming out on top. Our last final saw Donnacha Conlon and Tom Travers battle it out right to the end with a Jack McGloin point ensuring the teams could not be separated at the final whistle. We have a great gallery of pictures of the lads live now on aodhruadh.org. A huge well done to the boys on a very successful season. With a long season now wrapped up the club would also like to extend their thanks to Barry Travers and his hard-working group of mentors and helpers for all their trojan work over the course of the season.

1998 Reunion
The Aodh Ruadh 1998 senior football champions will be having a few drinks in Melly's Bar on Saturday evening and are extending an open invitation to all club members to join them for a night of craic and reminiscences.

Ladies
Our under 23s will be looking to extend their winning start to the season when Glenfin are the visitors to Father Tierney Park this weekend.

Our under 13 girls put in one of their best displays of the season away to Bundoran on Saturday morning, winning convincingly. An all-round strong team performance, but special mention to Faye Gillespie who contributed 5-6 of our team's scores. Training continues as usual this Thursday with the team away to Naomh Ultan this Saturday. Full details on that fixture will be circulated on the team's WhatsApp group.

The final training and games for our under 8 and under 6 girls take place this Tuesday when Four Masters will be the guests in Father Tierney Park. The action gets under way at 5pm. Our under 10s continue training on Monday evenings.

Well done to our senior ladies coach Ciaran Smith on helping steer Erne Gaels to the Fermanagh Senior Football Championship final this coming weekend with an impressive semi-final win over Enniskillen Gaels. Congrats also to our diligent physio Cian McBride on victory in the Sligo Junior B Championship final with Drumcliffe Rosses Point.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh will be taking part in the under 21 hurling championship this season. We would like to invite anyone interested in joining the squad to contact Daithi Breen on 087-9287965.

Our under 15 squad were very disappointed last Thursday evening to lose out on a place in the Championship final by the smallest of margins when they were beaten by MacCumhaill's by a solitary point in the Centre of Excellence in Convoy. Our boys started off strong and bagged the first score, but after a number of wides and hesitant play, by half time they were trailing 0-4 to 1-5. Again they came out stronger in the second half and not only caught up but even went ahead by two points at one stage. However, it was MacCumhaill's who managed to get over the line in the end and they now go on to meet Carndonagh in the Championship final next Friday. On reflection, this has been a remarkable year for this fine group of boys. Since training started way back in early March, these lads have put in endless hours of training and preparation and given us some fantastic displays of hurling and a lot of fun! In May they won the Táin Óg League in Lisnaskea and in June, having won the County Féile Competition, they travelled to the National competition in Ballinasloe where they made it to the semis. Along the way, the team managed to attract a few new players, seeing the squad soar to 27 and 11 of those players were part of the county under 15 Development Squad who won the Peter O'Keefe tournament in August. The progression and improvement of this panel has been evident for all to see and the juvenile hurling committee would like to sincerely thank their dedicated mentors; Paul Sheridan and Mark Sheerin for all their time, efforts, patience and vision. Next up for these lads is the hosting of the Billy Finn / John Larkin tournament this Sunday, the 22nd October in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. We are delighted to be able to host this tournament to remember and celebrate the huge involvement of these two men in Aodh Ruadh hurling history, particularly after it was cancelled last year as a mark of respect to the tragic events that unfolded in Creeslough. There will be five travelling teams and the action will start at 11am.

Scór Sinsear
Best of luck to our Ceol Urlise group of Sean O’Brien, Cíarde Sheerin, Lorraine O’Brien, Michael McGrath and Rionach Sheerin, and our Tráth na gCeist team of Paddy Kelly, Sylvester Maguire, Eamonn Martin Maguire and John Hughes who will be contesting the Ulster finals this Saturday in Omagh.

Camogie
Our underage girls continue training again this Sunday at 11.45am with the seniors training on Wednesday at 7.15pm.

Clothes collection
Our used clothes collection is still going strong and bags can continue to be dropped to North West Floors and Doors for the next number of weeks. Football
There's only one show in town this week folks! After 21 long years of watching on from the sidelines Aodh Ruadh were once again participants in the county's blue riband day. They took on a Gaoth Dobhair reserve team they had lost twice to already in the season, but if there were any latent trepidations, they weren't in evidence as Aodh Ruadh took to the field in very business-like fashion at a bright, autumnal MacCumhaill Park last Sunday.
They laid down an early marker with 20-year-old Colm McGloin cruising through to stroke over the game's opening point. Four minutes later good work from Darragh Flood Dolan and Gary Carty set David McGurrin up to point, although Gaoth Dobhair did hit back with an answering point to get themselves off the mark. Damian Weber then made his first contribution to the action with a 40 metre, but again the Gaeltacht men struck back with a point from play. With the game now in the second quarter Donagh McIntyre punted over a handsome effort to make it double scores, and Aodh Ruadh's play at this stage was marked by some outstanding blocks as they showed their hunger for the game. The last scores of the half would go the way of Gaoth Dobhair though as the sides headed for the dressing rooms with nothing between them, the score board reading four points apiece.
There were 37 seconds gone in the new half when Gaoth Dobhair took the lead for the first and only time in this game. Aodh Ruadh got back on terms a couple of minutes later thanks to a marvellous lofted effort from David McGurrin. Then came the game's key moment, with the outstanding Senan Rooney picking out Damian Weber with a peach of a pass. Weber was some distance out, but when he got the ball in his hand he only had one thing on his mind. His execution was immaculate and the finish was sublime as his rocket of a shot flashed into the bottom right corner of the net to put real daylight between the teams. Three minutes later Sticky Ward came out on his knees to win a ball in and was fouled before he could turn his sights on the target. Weber's confidence was sky high now and he caressed the difficult free over the bar off the deck as if it was a 13 metre gimme. In the 47th minute Aodh Ruadh made it double scores for a second time, this time the Ballyshannon men had moved the ball well to create a great opening and Gary Carty popped up on the end of it to slip over to make it 1-7 to 0-5. Ultimately, that was to prove the winning point. Gaoth Dobhair started to up the stakes now with the game slipping from their grasp. They managed to pick off points in the 49th, 57th, 58th and 61st minutes to set up an incredibly nervy finale. Aodh Ruadh tackled frantically and had to work like dogs to hold a desperate Gaoth Dobhair attacking assault at bay. Four minutes of added time were signalled and these were played and then some.
When Connie Doherty's long whistle finally sounded it set off scenes of total pandemonium as Ballyshannon players, management and fans took over the pitch. They took their time to soak in the achievement as they made their way to terrace side of the ground for the presentation where captain fantastic, Dan Warnock, received the trophy. Warnock made a brilliant speech, first saluting a gallant Gaoth Dobhair side, and the support from the Ballyshannon fans throughout the game, before paying tribute to his team mates and manager Brian Gillespie on helming the team to this landmark triumph. Damian Weber received the man of the match award, but there were candidates all over the pitch. Aaron Cullen kept a clean sheet and did a great job of getting his kicks away with Gaoth Dobhair pressing up on the kick out. In defence it was a special moment for Michael Ward who battled back from serious illness to become the fulcrum of the defence. He led a defensive effort which silenced Gaoth Dobhair's main threats and reduced them to taking on low percentage shots. Beside him the youthful Aidan Sweeny and Ryan Keenaghan looked like they had been born for days like this, playing as if it was just another game in the park. In the half back line the trio of Johnny Gallagher, Daniel Warnock and Gary Carty supplied power and pace from deep, no better exemplified by Carty's winning point. In midfield Colm McGloin set the tenor right from the off, with Donagh McIntyre and Odhran McGarrigle not shirking any challenges either. David McGurrin's polished and assured presence in the heart of the attack was a real ace up the sleeve for Ballyshannon, while beside him Senan Rooney must surely have been another in strong contention for the man of the match laurels. The Corker man was simply everywhere and his jinking runs regularly cut holes in a rugged Gaoth Dobhair defence. Darragh Flood Dolan gave further notice of his quality and promise with another assured performance here. Up front Sticky Ward and Damian Weber were given nothing cheap by the Gaeltacht defence, but in the end their class told. Aodh Ruadh were able to spring quality off the bench in the second half with Johnny Gethins, Tiernan Flood Dolan, Jason Granaghan and Marty McGarrigle helping to steady the ship in the closing stages. It's hugely encouraging to know that there were plenty more on the bench who could just as easily have been starting.
After the presentations there was a moment to treasure as the Reserve county champions formed a guard of honour for the jubilee team as they made their way on to the pitch to be presented before the county final crowd. The huge attendance were then introduced to the men of Ballyshannon who won the 1998 county title against Naomh Columba a quarter of a century ago. The past and the present and the future coming together in special moment for the Aodh Ruadh club. Check out aodhruadh.org where we have a gallery live with a bumper selection of pictures from a huge day for the club which will live long in the memory.
The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen; Ryan Keenaghan, Michael Ward, Aidan Sweeny; Gary Carty (0-1), Johnny Gallagher, Daniel Warnock; Odhran McGarrigle, Colm McGloin (0-1); Darragh Flood Dolan, David McGurrin (0-2), Senan Rooney; Damian Weber (1-2, 2f), Donagh McIntyre (0-1), Michael ‘Sticky’ Ward. Subs: Johnny Gethins for Donagh McIntyre 41 minute; Tiernan Flood Dolan for Odhran McGarrigle 46 minutes; Jason Granaghan for Keenaghan 46 minutes; Marty McGarrigle for Michael 'Sticky' Ward 54 minutes; Donagh McIntyre for Colm McGloin 64 minutes.

Congratulations to Sean Taylor who played a big role as Coolera Strandhill captured the Sligo senior county title. Congratulations also to our neighbours in Pettigo who took the C county championship title. Commiserations to Erne Gaels and Saint Molaise Gaels who both came up short after putting in huge efforts in their respective county deciders.

The under 21 championship commences this Saturday with many of the reserve championship winning Aodh Ruadh team returning to Ballybofey as the Ernesiders take on MacCumhaill's. Throw-in at 2.30pm.

The Bakery Cup commenced on Thursday evening with a real festival of football. The opening fixtures saw Aaron McLoone's team taking on Eoghan Gallagher's outfit and Antoin Duffy's side taking on MJ Ward's squad. There were wins for Eoghan and MJ in two hotly contested battles with real quality on show, in particular from the younger lads who performed superbly on the night. Thanks to our underage managers and club academy for helping pick this year's Bakery Cup Captains. Congratulations to MJ Ward, Eoghan 'Blake' Gallagher, Antoin Duffy and Aaron McLoone. The lads' teams are as follows.
MJ Ward: Connor Greenan, Joey Daly, Markko Branley, Jack Hassett, Oisin McGrath, Conor McGloin, Senan Ward, Diarmuid Fox, Donnacha Conlon, Peader Finnegan.
Eoghan 'Blake' Gallagher: Dara Vaughan, Ethan Kerrigan, Anthony Duffy, Dylan Cullen, Cian Alistair, Ciarán McGuinness, Harry McGowan, Robbie Van Hoidonk, Sean Travers, Michael Burke.
Antoin Duffy: Eoghan McCadden, Shaun McGarrigle, Manus Conlon, Alex Kerrigan, Darragh Patton, Daniel McLoone, Dara McGuinness, Aiden McGurrin, Tom Travers, Louis Hassett.
Aaron McLoone: Callum Dorrian, Darragh McCready, Iarla Hartin, Micheál McGrath, Alfie McGowan, Conor Grimes, John McHugh, Joseph Devenney, Phelim Barron, Pauric McGrath.

The next round of games in the Bakery Cup will take place on Thursday with the action throwing in at 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. That will be followed by the final round of group games on Saturday or Sunday. The Bakery Cup Finals will then take place in Father Tierney Park on Bank Holiday Monday 30th October. A special thanks to our Bakery Cup referees, Val Murray, Niall McCready and Michael McGrath.

Best of luck to our under 13 Division 3 boys who finally received a fixture for their long-awaited Shield Final. The decider will take place this Wednesday, 25th October at 6pm in MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey. We wish the players and management the best of luck and encourage a big showing of glas agus bán support to once again make their way to the county grounds to get behind the Ballyshannon boys!

Our under 7 boys played a blitz in Bundoran on Saturday morning with teams from Erne Gaels Belleek, Saint Molaise Gaels, Grange, Glencar Manorhamilton, Melvin Gaels Kinlough and Bundoran all taking part. Many thanks to Bundoran for a brilliantly organised blitz which our boys really enjoyed. The team's final blitz of the season will be our home blitz this Saturday, November 4th.

The Bord na nÓg AGM will take place on Wednesday, 25th October at 9pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. We will look back over 2023 and look to build on our achievements this year in 2024. We invite all committee members, underage managements, mentors and anyone with an interest in the development and promotion of underage football in Ballyshannon to attend this meeting.

Ladies
The Ladies AGM took place last Thursday in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. A review was made of activity in 2023 and plans sketched out for the coming season, on and off the field. The positions of chair and secretary were not filled and expressions of interest are now being welcomed. We thank Sarah Drummond, Louise Larkin and Anna Rafferty who gave great service in these roles over the past year. Meanwhile congratulations to Niamh Hoey who was appointed Assistant Secretary, and Anna Rafferty who was returned as Fundraising Officer. The club's County Board Delegates will be Paul Gillespie and Anna Rafferty. Team managements are to be appointed and ratified at the January meeting of the incoming Ladies Football committee.

The under 23s made the trip to take on Glenfin on Sunday morning. It was a game which Aodh Ruadh had requested moved, but that request was rejected by the club. Aodh Ruadh had a good first half, starting the scoring with a fine effort from Cáit Gillespie after she raided through the hosts' defence. Two minutes later Orla Keon came up on the end of a five team move to double the advantage before Glenfin opened their account in the seventh minute. Glenfin then levelled the game, but Aodh Ruadh went straight up the pitch and Mary Flora Scott coolly placed the ball past the keeper to thrust her side back into the lead. Scott then added a point, and as the game moved into the second quarter the sides exchanged goals, Cáit Gillespie finding the net to make it 1-2 to 2-3. The Shamettes extended their lead in the 22nd minute when Eimear McMahon was as merciless as ever from the penalty spot. That gave the Ballyshannon girls a seven point advantage at the interval. In the second half Glenfin came out strongly and in the first five minutes had hit 1-3. Eimear McMahon did hit an answering free, but the homesters came back with another 1-1 to move into the lead for the first time in the 40th minute. Eimear McMahon levelled it up at 3-5 apiece, but again Glenfin pushed on and hit 1-2 before Aodh Ruadh registered again through Cáit Gillespie. Fair play to the Ernesiders, they never stopped pushing, but Glenfin hit a late goal to put an unjustified gloss on the final scoreline for them. Síofra Hughes did brilliantly at full back throughout the game, as did Aoibhinn McGarrigle out around the middle of the pitch. Up front Mary Flora Scott was very lively in the attack. It is worth noting that this week the under 23s will be accommodating MacCumhaill's by playing their game on Friday evening instead of the scheduled Sunday morning.

Our under 13 girls league game against Naomh Ultan was postponed on Thursday due to a waterlogged pitch in Dunkineely. The match has been rescheduled for this Tuesday at 5.30pm. Training for the squad continues at 5.30pm on Thursday.

Our under 8 and under 6 girls season wrapped up last week and we'd like to thank the management for all their dedicated work with this big squad all year. Well done to the players who made great progress this season and thanks as ever to the parents and guardians for the help and support.

Scór Sinsear Ulster final success
Saturday was one of Donegal's most successful outings at the Ulster Scór Sinsir level in a number of years and Aodh Ruadh were among the clubs bringing home the goods on the night. Pride of place has to go to Sean O’Brien, Cíarde Sheerin, Lorraine O’Brien, Michael McGrath and Rionach Sheerin who took the provincial Ceol Urlise title. This was an outstanding victory in a hotly contested category with the competition of the very highest standard. The celebrations in McIntyre's afterwards were richly deserved. Meanwhile in the Tráth na gCéist section Aodh Ruadh captured provincial silver, finishing not far off the overall winners, Bredagh of Down in the provincial decider. Well done to Paddy Kelly, Eamonn Martin Maguire, Sylvester Maguire and John Hughes on the result. Both teams will now be going forward to represent club and county at the All-Ireland final stages in Killarney next month and we wish them the best of luck when they travel to the Kingdom.
